O’Neill’s Celtic’s GOAT claim and persisting core attributes

925

If Shane Duffy wanted to whet the appetite of supporters after securing his loan move to Celtic, scoring a 93rd minute equaliser for Ireland in their Nations Cup game in Bulgaria last night was the way to achieve it.  Those who know the player told us he was a commanding presence and the manner in which he powered home his header from a corner kick backed this up.

When you watch how teams defend set-pieces against Celtic, you will note their key defensive resources concentrate on Christopher Jullien.  He also appears to be the man other Celtic players try to provide space for, by stopping opponents getting a block on him.

Jullien is a better set-piece target than we have had in many years, but this makes us predictable to defend against.  Duffy will make Celtic significantly less easy to stop on these occasions.

If there was a Greatest Set-Piece Team of All Time table, Martin O’Neill’s Celtic would sit top.  Bobo Balde, Chris Sutton, Joos Valgaeren, Johan Mjallby and John Hartson were five absolute mountains.  Defenders seldom knew who to cover.  As a consequence, Henrik Larsson did as much damage in the air as any of them.

Football has changed greatly in the years since that team rose to prominence, it was a thing of its time, but defending and attacking at set-pieces requires the same core attributes.

  1. With a result of 1-1, one would naturally that the two teams were evenly matched…..nothing could be further from the truth.

One team looked very professional well-coached – the other like a bunch of guys who just turned up on the night & tried to do their best.

I leave to others to work out which was which.

  2. Callum Davidson on the beeb, ffs, jum jefferies, levein and rev i,m. jolly rolled in to one.

    Any music you like?

  9. Jings that was a duuuullllllll performance from Scotland.

Lack of a centre forward of note – similar to Celtic recently – really dulls the threat of the team and gives the normally sharp midfield players no locus through which to direct their play.

Dykes? Not great. I wondered what happened to Fletcher who was linked to us recently – injured maybe? Lack of Griff was also a problem for Scotland, as it was for us recently.

Agree that Clark did not seem to do anything from the sidelines to drive the team forward – team performance seemed to mirror the manager’s demeanour.

Re your question to TET, the Remember Me button doesn’t help. I get repeatedly kicked off, or cannot get on at all, until I am forced to post some nonsense.

To place a link, just open the You Tube video ( or anything else ) you wish to post, tap the screen top right, then the arrow which appears. You will get several options, including email or Copy. Tap Copy, go to the CQN comment box, tap and hold until Paste appears, then tap Paste.

Voila! You have posted a link after you hit Post Comment

Sorry i missed your reply earlier on the politics/debates

I cant comment on the Middle East stuff for professional reasons unfortunately

Your comments on higher education do chime though. I was talking to mini me at lunch about careers and she said “would you be disappointed if I didn’t go to college?’

I pointed out how easy it was for me in Scotland in the 80s to leave home and study engineering without any burden on my parents

As you say, it used to be 5% went to uni but i think it was about 20% when i went but still we had grants

Thatcher tried her best to get rid of grants, housing benefit , travel expenses and free fees

I got out just before loans and didn’t pay the poll tax fully(chase me)

To my great disappointment, New Labour (i was a member) extended targets on uni places such that grants were unaffordable and apprenticeships were downgraded as an achievement

Young people were fecked over deliberately by the Tories and unintentially by New Labour

THe SNP rise from nowhere is most probably due to devolution but also due to complacency in Labour.

Populism was the way forward for SNP and always with the comfort blanket of UK are to blame

The free uni education was great but backfired on the fact it was budgeted on no English or Europeans getting it. Euros won their case

We have free uni in Ireland but it isn’t seen as a core policy differentiator and there are plenty stealth costs to put off the poorest

The bigger costs here are around health and tax

Nothing is free health wise unless you are really poor and then you are on an endless waiting list

Tax for the PAYE is huge and seems to be here forever

Unless Scotland can bring in incremental business after independence , the taxes will be horrendous. Oil, whisky and salmon are already there and in private hands
