O’Neill’s Celtic’s GOAT claim and persisting core attributes

925

If Shane Duffy wanted to whet the appetite of supporters after securing his loan move to Celtic, scoring a 93rd minute equaliser for Ireland in their Nations Cup game in Bulgaria last night was the way to achieve it.  Those who know the player told us he was a commanding presence and the manner in which he powered home his header from a corner kick backed this up.

When you watch how teams defend set-pieces against Celtic, you will note their key defensive resources concentrate on Christopher Jullien.  He also appears to be the man other Celtic players try to provide space for, by stopping opponents getting a block on him.

Jullien is a better set-piece target than we have had in many years, but this makes us predictable to defend against.  Duffy will make Celtic significantly less easy to stop on these occasions.

If there was a Greatest Set-Piece Team of All Time table, Martin O’Neill’s Celtic would sit top.  Bobo Balde, Chris Sutton, Joos Valgaeren, Johan Mjallby and John Hartson were five absolute mountains.  Defenders seldom knew who to cover.  As a consequence, Henrik Larsson did as much damage in the air as any of them.

Football has changed greatly in the years since that team rose to prominence, it was a thing of its time, but defending and attacking at set-pieces requires the same core attributes.

  1. Philbhoy,

I think he tried to pull a fast one, no wonder if man shitty want to pay him 450 million. Barca should take what they can get and move on

All very political in Spain, I never thought Messi would leave however he was sincere in wanting to leave. Fans on phone Ins not happy with him

    ———

His statement lacked PR, was very honest, in that he wants to leave and win more trophies and that aint happening at Barca.

He’ll be gone in January unless the new president manages to make the right changes. No easy fix Barca they’ve been awful in the transfer market for years, and now the youth setup can’t save them.

  3. Hope Celtic players come through game tonight without injury. Don’t really know what this game is all about, so couldn’t care less what score is.

  4. PHILBHOY-hi mate . Don’t think messi is greedy .He could sit tight and pick up the same money he can expect anywhere else I think.Maybe just scunnerd and fancies a wee change in last few years as a top athlete.Probably staying anyway.🤷‍♀️

    Hope yir good buddy 💚

  5. Hairlike….

I will have my say – I will stay within the rules of the blog – neither you, nor any of the others, who have neither answers, nor, counter points but just insults & attacks, will change that- you have my firm promise on that.

  6. Scotland playing poorly , cant keep the ball and Look congested in midfield. Jack??? awful player and brings nothing to the team. Roberson doesn’t look comfy. Dykes offers physicality but not bothering Biton .

Interested to see how Clarke manages this game

  7. Messi is due a 70 million loyalty bonus at the end of every season apparently, incredible money. Games gone nuts.

  8. Regarding Messi. I heard Graham Hunter being interviewed on 5 live a few weeks ago. He said then that Messi had a clause in his contract that if informed Barca by the end of May that he wanted to leave, he was allowed to go free. Couldn’t believe what I was hearing

  9. Embramike – sorry both games are covered by sky.

Both are away from home and Sky cover all away games. No?

I typed in Celtic games on tv and my sky app I have used for the last few years popped up again that is where I am getting it from. But as I say I thought all of our away games were on tv and huns.

    D :)

I think these players are greedy and you won’t convince me otherwise.

    It’s not their fault.

Clubs are offering mega money to all and sundry, why turn it down?

McBurnie, £20,000,000 plus £50,000 per week.

    I rest my case.

Hope you are good too buddy!

    ——–

He had that clause for a while now.

He also gets a loyalty bonus of £60mill for staying each season.

Also meant to get £1mill a week in wages but that would mean he gets paid an insane annual wage.

Barca have a weird wage payment process. They pay the players once a year, and borrow the money from a bank each year to pay it.

  12. St Tams

Aye, I think that was the issue. Barca dispute that and Messi now staying. Not prepared to take the club to court, some fans will turn on him which is mind boggling

  13. Embramike – just looked at huns fixtures and they are away to Dundee utd on Saturday 12 September the same day we are away to Ross county wtf, so they have chosen their game then.

Our game away to st mirren should be on as well on the Wednesday.

    D :)

  14. Score flatters Scotland. Israel better set up and organised.

Robertson nowhere to go, midfield balance all wrong, but 1-0 it is.

  15. elhamed playing left side of a back 3 , agree re OE misses our last 2 games then comes on as sub and scores pen , strange

  16. lets all do the huddle on

the penalty was the only shot scotland had on target

    pretty rank

im glad celtic dont have too many scottish play….

    oh hang on 😟

  17. go on KT – the team were walking towards the tunnel at HT. Robertson was trying to give a tactical talk to KT , KT just looked at him and ran away – did ye aye moment!

  18. PHILBHOY-there aw greedy bar stewards 😉

I’m sure we will have some on soon telling us how much the lions were on before bonus 😉

There no different from us trying to make the best out of our own capabilities 🤷‍♀️

  19. glendalystonsils on

Bit of a dilemma here as I don’t want a team with Celtic players in it to lose . Therefore it’s gotta be a draw.

  20. prestonpans bhoys on

OMG that was a tired watch, taking off green specs what does the mid field hun offer, is that Jack?

Why does he keep pointing towards the Israeli defence, and pass crab style or backwards like Ferguson

  21. The Blogger Formerly Known As GM on

Decent run out for the Bhoys. Keep the limbs ticking over.

Surprised they don’t have piped booo…ing when El Hamed and Bitton touch the ball.

    Great penalty from showboat Christie.

If only his back heel flick had have come off against that Hungarian mob, when a simple left foot tap may have done the job😚

Nothing like putting Yourself in the shop window.

  22. JHB

Our government turn a blind eye to racism and bigotry every Saturday during the marching season, and also every game Sevco play.
