O’Neill’s Celtic’s GOAT claim and persisting core attributes

925

If Shane Duffy wanted to whet the appetite of supporters after securing his loan move to Celtic, scoring a 93rd minute equaliser for Ireland in their Nations Cup game in Bulgaria last night was the way to achieve it.  Those who know the player told us he was a commanding presence and the manner in which he powered home his header from a corner kick backed this up.

When you watch how teams defend set-pieces against Celtic, you will note their key defensive resources concentrate on Christopher Jullien.  He also appears to be the man other Celtic players try to provide space for, by stopping opponents getting a block on him.

Jullien is a better set-piece target than we have had in many years, but this makes us predictable to defend against.  Duffy will make Celtic significantly less easy to stop on these occasions.

If there was a Greatest Set-Piece Team of All Time table, Martin O’Neill’s Celtic would sit top.  Bobo Balde, Chris Sutton, Joos Valgaeren, Johan Mjallby and John Hartson were five absolute mountains.  Defenders seldom knew who to cover.  As a consequence, Henrik Larsson did as much damage in the air as any of them.

Football has changed greatly in the years since that team rose to prominence, it was a thing of its time, but defending and attacking at set-pieces requires the same core attributes.

  1. JHB,

I liked the idea of nationalisation, and I believe so did most voters.

    Train : definitely.

    Bus : probably

    Gas : definitely

    Electricity: definitely

    Water : absolutely, no brainer.

It’s not healthy to be dependent on CNOOC or others of similar ilk.

  3. If rumours are to be believed then Bakker of PSG could be a goer if PSG sign another LB.

Big, strong, quick and fast. Would be terrific.

    Here’s hoping.

  4. ERNIE LYNCH @ 12:49 PM,

Well to be fair to JHB, it’s not easy to keep your finger on the pulse of disparate and changing political landscape on the British Isles. Especially Scotland.

As a Scot who left for England a long time ago Scottish politics are an enigma. A smart Scottish Tim friend of mine who left Scotland some twenty plus years ago to my amazement has called every recent Scottish election right.

The Scottish elections, the General elections, the indepedence vote, the brexit vote. I was convinced he had the prediction totally wrong after the “failed” indepedence vote… yet he was spot on the SNP (who he doesn’t support) swept to victory.

JHB from Australia, no matter how much he watches and reads about Scottish politics is always going to be by being an ex-pat with the geographical and cultural distance and his confirmation bias out of touch with “on the ground” politics. And the dogmas are very different.

    In my opinion of course.

    Hail Hail

  5. Guys

Looking for a bit of advice.

My son has just received a lawyers letter demanding £250 for parking twice at the Forge.

It’s threatening legal action if unpaid.

Has anyone been pursued for this?

  6. BB- that subject crops up on here ,the advice given is don’t pay, and don’t even acknowledge it,as it’s possibly deemed that you have taken ownership of the bill.

  7. BILLYBHOY1967

They’ll have written to him as he’s presumably the registerd keeper of the vehicle.

Their right to claim thoughis against whoever was driving the vehicle at the time, and that might have been someone else.

He should write to them, tell them nothing and admit nothing, and ask what evidence they have that he was driving the vehicle at the time, and say he intends to defend any court action they raise. If they have no such evidence, and they know that he knows that they need such evidence it’s unlikely they’ll pursue it any further. If he does nothing the risk is they go ahead with court action hoping he won’t defend it.

  8. ERNIE LYNCH

    Et tu Brute?

So you you jump on the name-calling bandwagon when the narrative doesn’t suit you.

    Why is this?

I would never ever consider that, my pride & self-esteem would not allow it – civility costs nothing, it’s what makes us civilised.

Within a perfectly civil discussion, you suddenly shout out “troll” (whatever that means) “false flag” (whatever that means) & eejit, I certainly know what that means – it was about the only nasty word my Irish gran’s vocabulary.

“Celtic – a club open too all”, not defined by religious, or, political dogma. My club – I always remember that when coming in contact with its name.

  9. Anyone on here know of anyone who has ever been taken to court for not paying a fine in a Tesco’s or retail car park or a hospital car park?

    Naw, me neither.

I know a senior nurse at Forth Valley Royal Hospital in Larbert, who had, the last time we spoke, 73 unpaid tickets for parking in her works carpark.

My understanding is that if you get a parking ticket from the police or a council traffic warden, pay up.

    The rest can go whistle……………..

  10. JHB

I respect your right to post, whether I agree with it or not.

I also respect everyone is entitled to reply to you, whether they agree with you or not.

You can complain to PAUL67 about personal abuse and he will deal with it.

  11. Ernie Lynch

I will do you the courtesy of answering the question in your first paragraph, before you were apparently stung by a wasp, or, bitten by a rabid dog.

“So why did the pollsters find that the policies were popular with voters?”

Opinion polls are one thing, general elections are the REAL thing.

Such was the popularity of Corbyn’s manifesto that it delivered the worst Labour result since 1935. Half the Labour vote in their so-called ‘heartlands’ voted Tory and returned Boris with a landslide.

Mr Salmond was told by his pollsters 36 houts before the Indyref 2014 that he was going to win – they were totally wrong – he didn”t.

The land owner is legally entitled to enforce the contractual terms on their parking lot against the drivers who use it.

  13. Andrew Dallas …Again WTF …What is it going to take for OurCEO and board to demand answers to the CHEATING from These referees …

There is no doubt that Dallas was not impartial in his handling of the Dundee United match…. and it could be argued that in not protecting our CF he cost us a European CL place…. Still nothing is said from OUR club….

Cmon Lawwell earn your corn and speak up and demand FAIR play from these people….

Keep an eye on the treatment our new Centre Half will get from them…remember how they done their best to neutralise Paul Elliot…Bookings In lots of his Early career with us…. Welcome to OUR

Scotland Shane will be the Cry from The DALLAS COWBOYS ….

  14. Philbhoy

Appreciate & agree with all you say and in no way take it to mean tgat you agree with all my views on everything.

I did contemplate contacting Paul but I decided not to on this occasion. I have copied and noted everything and will do so if it happens again.

It is not in my nature to have anyone censured, or banned, for holding views that are different from me on a blog that is designed to attract the Celtic family. That said I am quite frankly appalled at the level of personal vitriol dished out by some on here (not only to me) – they certainly would not attempt it face to face

  15. Philbhoy – thanks I’ll be fine think I had 4 cups of caffeine before my doctors 10am appointment where he surprised me by taking my blood pressure as it was a sore knee I went with and swollen ankles.

Anyway my BP has been in the low normal everyday for past 6 days.

My bloods all came back normal feck knows what the swollen ankles were, think it might have something to do with my dodgy liver. But all good here.

I will save my drink for next Saturday Ross County game. 🍺

  16. MM – Mick dont you start….😂

Does it depend on what political party you vote for what you call it? Asking for a couple of posters.

    D :)

  17. JHB

    Appreciate your reply.

I’ve been posting here for 12 or 13 years and am no stranger to personal abuse, probably, regrettably, giving out more than I received.

I have, shamefully, been yellow carded a couple of times by PAUL67, but that was years ago.

I do scroll by one or two though, you should do the same.

    Take care.

Do you know of any successful prosecution?

    ##

It’s not a prosecution. It’s a civil claim to enforce the terms of a contract.

Are you saying that the landowner doesn’t have the legal right to claim the penalty?

If we ever get over this pandemic you should come along to the next annual HOOTENANNY.

    There is not a CQN’er I have met, that I didn’t like.

    And I have met loads.

It;s good to talk…….even better face to face.

    Have a great night!

I’ve also got vouchers for Dishoom, my favourite restaurant, and the Dome in Edinburgh.

    So weekends are looking good!

  23. ERNIE

    OK.

Do you know of a successful civil claim from a landowner for parking in a supermarket car park not supervised by the police or a council traffic warden?

I’ve had 3 tickets in Tesco’s car park in Linlithgow which I ignored.

Lawyers letters, debt collectors, a number of them chasing the same fine, all ignored.

    All gone away.

Why did the not pursue a civil claim against me?

  24. Philbhoy

    HOOTENANNY?

Now I may just take you up on that – one good thing about this lockdown, it has given me plenty of time to think…and read – said to my eldest daughter a couple of months ago that I was undergoing a ‘soft re-boot’ – she said “good”.

  25. JHB @ 1.47

Your particularly slanted — media driven — view of 2019 does not tell the full picture.

    2019 — JC @ 32% of the popular vote.

2010 — GB @ 30% of the popular vote was a poorer results.

1983 — MF @ 28% of the popular vote was the pits / no pun intended.

Interesting to look at the figures for England — 2019 vs 2010.

The Scots let the side down with their identity politics in 2019 — something we cannot blame JC for although I am sure some will try.

2019 was particularly bad but is was not the worst result since 1935.

BoJo did well because he got out the shy Tory vote in the north and got some of the hard of thinking / socially conservative / nativist / Lab Brexit mob to jump the dyke.

It was a call for help rather than a sophisticated re-alignment of British politics.

2017 was more like that — just a case it got lost in the Brexit fog.
