O’Neill’s Celtic’s GOAT claim and persisting core attributes

925

If Shane Duffy wanted to whet the appetite of supporters after securing his loan move to Celtic, scoring a 93rd minute equaliser for Ireland in their Nations Cup game in Bulgaria last night was the way to achieve it.  Those who know the player told us he was a commanding presence and the manner in which he powered home his header from a corner kick backed this up.

When you watch how teams defend set-pieces against Celtic, you will note their key defensive resources concentrate on Christopher Jullien.  He also appears to be the man other Celtic players try to provide space for, by stopping opponents getting a block on him.

Jullien is a better set-piece target than we have had in many years, but this makes us predictable to defend against.  Duffy will make Celtic significantly less easy to stop on these occasions.

If there was a Greatest Set-Piece Team of All Time table, Martin O’Neill’s Celtic would sit top.  Bobo Balde, Chris Sutton, Joos Valgaeren, Johan Mjallby and John Hartson were five absolute mountains.  Defenders seldom knew who to cover.  As a consequence, Henrik Larsson did as much damage in the air as any of them.

Football has changed greatly in the years since that team rose to prominence, it was a thing of its time, but defending and attacking at set-pieces requires the same core attributes.

  1. There was no VAR for some strange reason, England had a perfectly good goal ruled offside in the first half, would’ve made the game more open if that had stood.

Crazy that the players/teams are going from VAR to no Var and back again, at top level football.

Interesting post – can I mention, your point, about the popular vote?

In Scotland, as you will certainly know, we have, as was the case in the 2014 referendum, UK voters outnumbering the nationalists in every election – however because the UK vote is split between 3 parties, & the SNP vote is not, they get into power – the big exception of course was the aforementioned Ref, when the UK vote triumphed comfortably. Perhaps Gorgeous George will make a difference in 2021HR – he most certainly did in 2014. I attended many of his hustings – the one at the RCH (I know you like the odd acronym) was superb. Even a partial alliance/tactical vote, could be very interesting.

Another ‘distortion’, if you like, is the last US Presidential election. Although Hilary Clinton clearly won the popular vote, Trump was elected due to the Electoral College system. Clinton piled-up lots of votes in safe seats, but was unable to make an impact elsewhere – Corbyn done something similar, although always on a losing trajectory.

Oh, and if it’s not clear his use of ‘virtue signalling’ was a response to posters voicing their respect for Neil Lennon regarding the bombs and bullets he has had to endure as a player and manager.

  5. FRANK TERRY

You make only mischief, not valid points.

I stand shoulder to shoulder with Neil on all the atrocities committed against him – some unpunished, most punished very weakly.

It is those who use these events to make unrelated points that I criticise.

Neil’s position as Celtic manager means he is open to valid criticism on the performance of the team, as are the players & the board of directors.

To weave these two different things together to make a devious & underhand point is unforgivable – it should fill you with shame, but it won’t.

Rapidly turning into a politics borefest where a number of people have a go at each other about their views then start name calling and so it goes on. Someone suggested a separate blog for them – if only…..

The reason I put up that post is to inform those who are unaware of what JHB is really about. If I were a new poster and felt tempted to reply to him seeing those quotes would make me realise it was a waste of time. If anyone else wants to engage with him that is entirely up to them – I ignore his posts and don’t comment on any conversations he is involved in.

Now if JHB wants to report me to Paul67 then he is free to do so. But consider this: I am not insulting him all I am doing is reminding the blog of what he has posted in the past. If our host wishes me to leave then you won’t hear from me again… however I suspect Paul67 (as a young and tech savvy guy) would take one look at those quotes from JHB, come to the same conclusion as I have and tell him to GTF (well, he’s probably more polite than I am but that would be the gist of it). Incidentally, this is why JHB won’t go to Paul67 in a million years but will instead claim he is being bullied to elicit sympathy from other posters – another classic troll behaviour.

Some relevant info. My wife is a teacher as are a few of my friends and family. My sister-in-law was pretty shaken up last year after an aggressive parent had a go at her for ‘teaching porn’. Complete nonsense of course and she explained to the parent the reality of the situation but nonetheless it was a particularly unpleasant experience which she should never have had to go through. The extreme right wing propaganda that JHB (and the legion of trolls that populate the internet) spout has real life consequences for those who have to deal with the fall out. SFTB recommended a book – Anti Social by Andrew Marantz – which is an informative read on what is going on in that shady world.

That’s my last word on it, apart from posting those quotes any time JHB deigns to grace us with his presence on a new blog – I am the leader of the Troll Hunter C.S.C after all (Provisionals – we have recently split).

for the last few years there have clearly been political agitators on here who only came on at the behest of their masters to peddle their masters beliefs and have nothing to do with football

Really glad I am not the only one totally pissed off with those who come on to pontificate about the SNP, Tory, Labour etc…

Celtic is what we are about – this place surely has more folk who don’t want the political pish than do?

  11. Celtic are playing just now … so any poster is free to post on whatever subject they feel like … whether others respond or not … if any poster stays within the unwritten rules … which is usually just a bit of politeness .. take it from a CQN Moreloss (who reacted like a brat :-) … if any poster whether you agree or disagree stays within the rules I would prefer that poster to keep posting … I try and stay away fae the politics … I get in enough trouble backing up our manager (a wee joke)

Keep this place as Celtic as possible but surely helps when the bhoys are playing …

Keep posting .. if we all chuck it then we all lose :-)

  18. I very very rarely post, but I can’t wait for Celtic to be back playing, and hoping that CQN gets back to being CQN.

Yes, like our club, the blog should be “open to all”….but for a while now CQN has lost far too many readers…and they have been “replaced” by far too many antagonists…who are only here to disrupt this once great blog…Yes, I know some will say to just scroll by….but this blog used to (nearly) always be a pleasure to log into and read very valid and varied discussion….but this is becoming rarer and rarer…..

The antagonist are just an absolute bore fest…..please just FOF to elsewhere so we can get our blog back..

this used to be a celtic website

    ###

There’s always been political posts though the percentage has increased recently.

But is that because there are more political posts or fewer Celtic posts, or a bit of both?

If those who come on just to moan about the number of political posts instead actually posted something about Celtic it might go some way to meeting their concerns.

  22. Can’t understand why the “posters”……..currantly under scrutiny…………………………… don’t choose the smaller, fringe sites for thur ooooootbursts?
