O’Neill’s Celtic’s GOAT claim and persisting core attributes

925

If Shane Duffy wanted to whet the appetite of supporters after securing his loan move to Celtic, scoring a 93rd minute equaliser for Ireland in their Nations Cup game in Bulgaria last night was the way to achieve it.  Those who know the player told us he was a commanding presence and the manner in which he powered home his header from a corner kick backed this up.

When you watch how teams defend set-pieces against Celtic, you will note their key defensive resources concentrate on Christopher Jullien.  He also appears to be the man other Celtic players try to provide space for, by stopping opponents getting a block on him.

Jullien is a better set-piece target than we have had in many years, but this makes us predictable to defend against.  Duffy will make Celtic significantly less easy to stop on these occasions.

If there was a Greatest Set-Piece Team of All Time table, Martin O’Neill’s Celtic would sit top.  Bobo Balde, Chris Sutton, Joos Valgaeren, Johan Mjallby and John Hartson were five absolute mountains.  Defenders seldom knew who to cover.  As a consequence, Henrik Larsson did as much damage in the air as any of them.

Football has changed greatly in the years since that team rose to prominence, it was a thing of its time, but defending and attacking at set-pieces requires the same core attributes.

Your favourite Cowboy names were excellent and I clearly remember them all…but I also thought that…

    ” LIBERTY VALANCE”..was/is a cracking Cowboy name.

The late great Lee Marvin played Liberty Valance to perfection in the film ” The Man who Shot Liberty Valance”…great stuff.

There is another old black and white Cowboy film called…” My Darlin Clementine”…with Henry Fonda playing Wyatt Earp, and an actor who used to send himself up in real life, ( as he always claimed that he couldnt act etc)…and that actors name was ” VICTOR MATURE”….Who played the role of “Doc Holliday” in the same movie, and he played that part to perfection as the the alcoholic, pyschopath Dentist Doc Holliday….who actually had a good heart…despite shooting many bad guys, and being fast on the trigger.

Ive always thought that Big Victor as Doc Holliday was the BEST role that he ever played ?

The great John Ford was the director of that movie..and the casting was brilliant…as it also included that old Facist Ward Bond ( One of Wyatt Earps brothers)… and Walter Brennan as the head of the Clanton Gang…and he was a murdering, back stabbing bad yin in that film. If you havent seen it…have a swatch asap..its great ?

    top 3.

Nothing to do with big Mark Magee who I thought played

a lot better with Eberdeen than he ever did with us.

    Opinions eh?

Do you watch The Opening Show on Saturday morning’s? A great stitch up yesterday.

Each week, the presenters offer a £20 tip for charity from the day’s runners. The producers did the graphic for Matt Chapman as £10 each way on Enable at 1/9.

He couldn’t take it, “that’s not my tip, that’s not my tip”. Of course, she cruised home by seven lengths at 1/14.

    Good luck with your picks.

  8. GFTB – do not do yourself a diservice (only work with DWP) that like so many people was and is an important role to keep people and society going.

There has been so many selfless people working to keep vital services going and I for 1 am eternally grateful to them all.

    He’s fat, he’s round, he’s worth a million pound :-)

  10. There’s a conversation, funniest Celtic songs. I once tried to start an Anton Rogan song and was totally humiliated as no one else joined, just looked at me as if i were an idiot.

Not a funny song but as a Stone Roses fan I love the Eddie song, if he leaves I’ll be gutted and not just because we’re losing an amazing player :-)

  11. David66 8.29am

25years in HMRC and binned many a grassing letter about next door neighbours working as taxi drivers :-)

Now 5years in the benefit circle, in the past 5years, I have worked beside far too many people who think it’s “their” money … would love to see some of my fellow workmates (not the bhoys on here) try and get by on the money the genuine people on UC receive … I try my best to give every penny I can to punters or at least give them a hint to what they are due, I better stop in case I say post something that incriminates me :-)

  12. FrankTerry 8.50am

I loved Anton Rogan … probably the last left back we had that was over 6ft

I actually think he was a better centre half and would have been magic these days in a back 3

  13. GFTB on 6TH SEPTEMBER 2020 8:53 AM

    Good man.

Yeah, I was a big Anton fan as well! Underrated player imo.

Funniest Celtic songs, takes me back to the midden and Celtic

just scored, the bilious bigots are being kerried out of the park

with the arms up behind their backs wi their brethren in blue.

And the Celtic support broke into a song en masse that was top

of the hit parade at the time.

” They’re coming to take you away ha ha.”

Suppose you had to be there lol.

As a wee “extra” the scheme I grew up in and still live in all the Huns knew from around the centenary season I worked for HMRC so I got the usual “the Queen is your boss, you take the Queens shilling” and all the other guff about their Majesty… well my wife “took” my voluntary redundancy back in 2014 … so when all the Huns where I stay started to question why I didn’t work for HMRC now I decided to tell a wee fib (even though nothing to do with the office I worked in) I told a few of them I had to chuck the job because I was instrumental in liquidating their original Klub …. I think so of them still believe it :-) childish … but makes me smile :-)

  16. GFTB – I am on the other side I work for a Housing Association and see where some of the cash goes, all I can say its that it can be heartbreaking what some people have become (many different circumstances have led people to the point I am talking about) worse when there is children involved.

Anyway a discussion for another day.

    Hail Hail

  17. MELBOURNE MICK on 6TH SEPTEMBER 2020 9:03 AM

    Nice one:-)

One of the only two times I was ever there I’d only got in as I was collecting for the Marie Curie Centre (it was through SVDP). Anyway, after collecting outside we were allowed in to watch the game – except we were in with the Rangers fans!

It was also the game that we won 2-0 (Collins, McStay, which was quite an upset in those days) but we couldn’t celebrate or we’d have been lynched. One of the guys I was with had great fun shouting abuse at the Rangers players (like of their fans were doing) but I was too scared to open my mouth :-)

Maybe not the Funniest Celtic song…..

    But

I laughed when I was younger but now realise he is a skeekit wee bam… the Huns were warming up one Saturday and Davie Dodds was over at the jungle and obviously the “Davie Dodds elephant man” was in full voice .. McCoist sneaks up behind his teammate then starts “laughing” behind his back, don’t get me wrong everybody in the crowd thought it was hilarious …. but just shows super Ally up for what he is … a creep who would sell his soul to be “liked”

Hopefully we have that discussion one day … back in 2015 we spent 5 weeks training and every question about “housing” our trainer answered you dint need to know about housing it’s a specialist area that you trainees won’t need to know about … after 5 weeks training guess where I got put … “housing” … me, Dallas & AoW all have a housing background in UC so if any questions get my email/mobile fae P67 (or Lennybhoy) would be happy to help in any way possible

  24. Bada, I don’t usually know my arse from my elbow but I’m sure Big Nir played on the right on Friday, not the left.

Anyhoo, has anyone done the Three Isles tour? Mull, Staffa & Iona. Just checking if anyone has some tips on what to look out for.

GFTB- – giving away free money now? 😁

As you know it isnae free, they have to pay it back. If anyone knows someone looking for work, tell them to request a Flexible Support Fund – which is free and allows them to buy new clothing, tools & travel expenses. More money has been put in the tank to support the above.

God, I miss Celtic, even the one that wasn’t playing great.
