O’Neill’s Celtic’s GOAT claim and persisting core attributes

925

If Shane Duffy wanted to whet the appetite of supporters after securing his loan move to Celtic, scoring a 93rd minute equaliser for Ireland in their Nations Cup game in Bulgaria last night was the way to achieve it.  Those who know the player told us he was a commanding presence and the manner in which he powered home his header from a corner kick backed this up.

When you watch how teams defend set-pieces against Celtic, you will note their key defensive resources concentrate on Christopher Jullien.  He also appears to be the man other Celtic players try to provide space for, by stopping opponents getting a block on him.

Jullien is a better set-piece target than we have had in many years, but this makes us predictable to defend against.  Duffy will make Celtic significantly less easy to stop on these occasions.

If there was a Greatest Set-Piece Team of All Time table, Martin O’Neill’s Celtic would sit top.  Bobo Balde, Chris Sutton, Joos Valgaeren, Johan Mjallby and John Hartson were five absolute mountains.  Defenders seldom knew who to cover.  As a consequence, Henrik Larsson did as much damage in the air as any of them.

Football has changed greatly in the years since that team rose to prominence, it was a thing of its time, but defending and attacking at set-pieces requires the same core attributes.

The Junior‘S Cup final was written by James Copeland, he was an actor( the Seekers, The Maggie), he also wrote poems. He is the father of Scottish actor Jimmy Cosmo.

His poetry collection is called ‘Some Work’ – the Junior’s Cup final is in it – I have it in front of me as I type! All the way from 1972.

  2. Dont know if anyone listened to Saturday lunchtime Off the Ball.

Guest was the soon to be Moderator of the Church of Scotland ( in waiting)

Right Reverend Dr. Martin Fair ….

    he is from Arbroath.

He stated his football credentials, he is a Scotland fan….

    …and a Glasgow Rangers fan…. ( what a surprise)

For some reason Clean didn’t give him a grilling why he didn’t support his local team…

The Team of The Day predictably was religious theme… suggestions such as

Owen Archdeacon , Jesus Nevas, etc.

    Someone suggested

    Nick Pope in goal…

About five minutes later the moderator, with no prompting , suggested that they replace Nick Pope with Cammy ‘Church’ Bell.

No humour , just a straightforward suggestion…… having Pope in the team was obviously troubling him.

Cowan and Cosgrove then asked the listeners to suggest who Jesus would support ,and why,

    , the Moderator elect suggested.

” my own team Glasgow Rangers ….

because they came back from the dead”

There you have it , direct from the horses mouth.

    Back from the Dead !

I think that means, he will find, that he no longer is the Moderator in waiting.

“…your clubs deid mate , beat it”

    Indeed!

There were a few of us thought the same, including our esteemed cave dweller from Spain.

    TET if you haven’t guessed.

I was listening but didn’t even give it a second thought … your post makes it even sweeter :-)

I did catch the bit the hosts were saying that every “celebrity” fan was a Celtic fan but at least all CoS reverends followed the Gers…. everyone anyone

  5. My wife and I are thinking of getting a holiday van at Queensberry Powfoot. Somewhere that the grandweans can come to on holidays and weekends.

Any CQNers have info about if.

  6. I hadn’t watched big Shane until the last couple if internationals. He won’t be quite as sharp but if I’m honest he doesn’t look celtic class – who cares what he did for Brighton. Brighton defend in numbers and its easier to defend tight space. So far with Irelands last 2 games, the format is more akin to what celtic set up is, a back three with space all around. Pukki , yes Pukki who is not the quickest is guiding past him and ghosting in behind on a few occasions this first half. I’m very very worried about his lack of pace and positioning.

I had the same concerns from previous game.

2 unknowns. His fitness levels and how Julien and Ajer will compensate.

Back to the wall defender who will get torn to shreds without cover – its as simple as that.

Positives, he’s good in the air, his ball distribution is good and his character.

Sorry bhoys, my scouting opinion based on 1.5 games doesn’t have much cred but I’m a tad concerned. He’s the kind of defender I used to love playing against – I was wee but fast.

You really are showing your ignorance if you think Old Monkey Glands owns the “Forgers Gazette” — really poor show that highlights your lack of stature in the world of politics.

As for the 1976 / IMF “incident” — we got OK’ed for a loan but never drew down on the line of credit because — surprise / surprise — the Treasury got its figures wrong and was just crying wolf.

Obviously you knew that and were just at the madam.

In future you could look into the whole event regarding how did we ever get into a situation where an orthodox Treasury establishment would want to put the kybosh on a progressive political agenda …

Start of from a position of an establishment that had lost confidence in its own abilities would be a good place to start — post colonial economics aka raw material inflation / the Barber Boom / Oil Shock 1 / industrial militancy / inflation all played their part.

Or the more base political angle involving the North Sea.

So that when HW + DH !?! wanted to squeeze the pips until they squeaked they took fright and tried to pull their horns in before the oil revenues started to grow and real change could be accomplished.

1976 was a an establishment economic coup and nothing else — HW got the country out of the 3 day week and had made great strides to modernise the country socially and that would never do.

Post 76 — JC + DH was nothing like monetarism no matter how much JC’s son in law tried to claim credit for a reduction in spending. The growing economy in 1978 would suggest that they had weathered the wobble and were making progress.

So much progress that the Treasury / establishment had to call in some favours from the skilled unions to put a spoke in the wheels — literally in the case of the strike at Ford that closed down the profits from “Treasure Island” which were keeping the whole company afloat at the time.

Consequently if you want to discuss the 70’s — less right wing propaganda and more analysis would be useful.

If that is all you have got then that is your issue but please no more Forger’s Gazette lies.

Celtic hero Tommy Burns’ son has pleaded for sensitivity after a spate of heartless comments about his father’s death.

Johnathan Burns took to Twitter to expose a cruel comment about Tommy’s death as he adds it is a ‘regular’ occurrence.

The Celtic legend died in 2008 after a battle with cancer.

A social media user shared the crude message from the account @BritishnotScot which has since been deleted.

A part of the message read: “I remember Tommy Burns lying on his death bed. Tremendous times.”

    Glasgow Times:

Johnathan urged his followers to be better than the Twitter trolls and to “spread love” instead.

    Glasgow Times:

He wrote: “Been sent this a few times today, I see stuff like this regularly on twitter it is what it is.

“Rise above it, be better than it. Spread love.”

Twitter users paid tributes to the legendary player as they expressed their support to Johnathan.

One person said: “You’re definitely your Dad’s son, Jonathan – that’s exactly how he would have reacted – with dignity and love.”

Another wrote: “So sorry you have to deal with that kind of rubbish. I was lucky enough to meet your dad a couple of times through work – he was a gentleman. Looks like you have inherited that from him.”

A third added: “JB, your Dad was my hero as you know. What a legacy he left both in what he gave to football and your wonderful family. He would be so proud of you all.”

I asked you about the currency situation in an independent Scotland and you provided no answer but babbled some stats about GB and the 2010 campaign.

Happy to discuss this in detail but would preferred you focused on the issues in front of us rather than what happened in the past.

Consequently any thoughts on the currency of an independent Scotland?

You have offered some thoughts around the periphery but nothing on the central tenet of its economic future — so what would be your thoughts?

The influence of the MIB on our new CH — well we have the PE episode to fall back on.

First season with us 30 years ago and he got the “Yellow Jersey” in his first season — 26’ish yellow cards in one season.

From memory usually within the first 30 minutes.

The MIB really went to town that season.

  13. Ron B – never heard of that caravan site.

I like taking grandweans away every september weekend to caravan sites but I have to admit I like the Haven sites.

If this shit keeps up and we cannot get summer holidays abroad I might think of buying 1 myself.

  14. David66 6.32pm

Our holiday destination has always been Santa Ponsa (ma Sevconian Mrs likes it more than me) … 2hrs flight shoots in … then they liked Tenerife .. boy even pre-Covid my daughter loves caravan holidays, Craig Tara / Seton Sands or even Weymss Bay for a wee day trip to Rothesay … if not raining Scotland is beautiful … last couple of holidays took the wee 4yr old granddaughter … caravan holidays might get looked down upon … kids memories are worth more than the sun :-)!

  15. An Tearmann, thanks for taking the time to provide firsthand info and links on Mull etc…

Much appreciated and better than TripAdvisor etc…

Really looking forward to it now and must remember to bring my binoculars which I usually use to see if the Huns are really coming. 😂😂

  16. GFTB – we are off to Haggerston this September weekend, 16 of us.

Last year was same destination at September weekend asoloutley love Haggerston, Seton Sands and Fkamingo land wow.

We like our family holiday in the summer abroad but this years was cancelled to Tenerife so we booked for Turkey next year and upgraded slightly, hotel look amazing, but if it’s off I might rethink and buy a van as in caravan. My late mother had one at Sandylands and it was a holiday every weekend. My daughter loved it.

Then again site fees are extortionate so might just hire for summer.

  21. David66 6.55pm

The Mrs & family love Haggerston, we went a few years ago and one of my mates is a taxi driver .. told him give us a price and if it doesn’t cost you money can you drive us … we done the same for Seton Sands in August … my good lady wants one of caravans you need to pump your own water … I only agree if we get deluxe or prestige … some of them are pure luxury … back in August we were on the beach at 9am in the morning with the tide miles out and the sun shining … kids splashing in the sea … great stuff … enjoy Haggerston cracking chippie in the complex, hope you and all the family have a great time

  22. GFTB – last year at Haggerston I booked a lodge right on the lake opposite the entertainment complex. It was great.

This year my nephew has booked the 3 caravans, I am dreading what he has booked but as long as I have my T lager, family and VST for Hibs game I will be ok.

  23. AN TEARMANN @ 4:00 PM,

All good here, thanks for the reply, I forgot the Covid factor, thought it would be a UK thing but it’s never that simple.

For me the economy obviously has to be hugely important but with England jerking to the right surely such factors as what type of Country does Scotland want to be? And what does post Brexit Scotland look like, are major factors.

Still, guess it’s just a matter of getting through the pandemic and letting the dust settle.

All the best, hope you get into Celtic Park soon.

    Hail Hail

  24. David66 7.26pm

  25. Chairbhoy 7.27pm
