O’Neill’s Celtic’s GOAT claim and persisting core attributes

If Shane Duffy wanted to whet the appetite of supporters after securing his loan move to Celtic, scoring a 93rd minute equaliser for Ireland in their Nations Cup game in Bulgaria last night was the way to achieve it.  Those who know the player told us he was a commanding presence and the manner in which he powered home his header from a corner kick backed this up.

When you watch how teams defend set-pieces against Celtic, you will note their key defensive resources concentrate on Christopher Jullien.  He also appears to be the man other Celtic players try to provide space for, by stopping opponents getting a block on him.

Jullien is a better set-piece target than we have had in many years, but this makes us predictable to defend against.  Duffy will make Celtic significantly less easy to stop on these occasions.

If there was a Greatest Set-Piece Team of All Time table, Martin O’Neill’s Celtic would sit top.  Bobo Balde, Chris Sutton, Joos Valgaeren, Johan Mjallby and John Hartson were five absolute mountains.  Defenders seldom knew who to cover.  As a consequence, Henrik Larsson did as much damage in the air as any of them.

Football has changed greatly in the years since that team rose to prominence, it was a thing of its time, but defending and attacking at set-pieces requires the same core attributes.

    For me the economy obviously has to be hugely important but with England jerking to the right surely such factors as what type of Country does Scotland want to be? And what does post Brexit Scotland look like, are major factors.

    Chairbhoy asked what I thought was a genuine question from his curiosity about figures in debating Scotland

     

     

    I was just pointing out all figures pro or anti union now have covid atop them….the covid factor.so in the context of Chairbhoys reply to my post i did not see offence was caused. I will explain this better face to face 😊 as I could laugh with you and explain how you don’t need to be so touchy.

    International breaks seem to bring out the worst from the ever decreasing pool of posters on this once enjoyable site. One positive is that the cut’n’paste merchant has taken a night off, only for his boots to be kept warm by madmitch, his fluffer in chief…c’est la vie! And we have GFTB staying up past his own bed time to pick a fight in an empty room…just stick to the footie, way less stressful!

     

    My tuppenceworth for the night? Duffy has looked decidedly average in his last two appearances, but watching that turgid Irish team is enough to put anyone off…time will tell! And as for the LB position…PSG prospect or surplus from Charlton…hmmm!

    The ” Vance Hollinger” that I worked with in the late 1970’s would be around 62/63 years of age nowadays, slightly younger than me, and we were both Apprentice Electricians at that time. I dont know if Vance served his Trade as an Electrician and got his papers some time later…I can only assume that he did ?

     

    One of us got a shift to another yard in Glasgow, so we lost contact especially as I had just got married in late 1977, and I had a lot going on at the time. LOL

     

     

    Its difficult to believe that there are TWO “Vance Hollingers”…who knows….. so I will assume that its the same Guy ?
