O’Neill’s Celtic’s GOAT claim and persisting core attributes

925

If Shane Duffy wanted to whet the appetite of supporters after securing his loan move to Celtic, scoring a 93rd minute equaliser for Ireland in their Nations Cup game in Bulgaria last night was the way to achieve it.  Those who know the player told us he was a commanding presence and the manner in which he powered home his header from a corner kick backed this up.

When you watch how teams defend set-pieces against Celtic, you will note their key defensive resources concentrate on Christopher Jullien.  He also appears to be the man other Celtic players try to provide space for, by stopping opponents getting a block on him.

Jullien is a better set-piece target than we have had in many years, but this makes us predictable to defend against.  Duffy will make Celtic significantly less easy to stop on these occasions.

If there was a Greatest Set-Piece Team of All Time table, Martin O’Neill’s Celtic would sit top.  Bobo Balde, Chris Sutton, Joos Valgaeren, Johan Mjallby and John Hartson were five absolute mountains.  Defenders seldom knew who to cover.  As a consequence, Henrik Larsson did as much damage in the air as any of them.

Football has changed greatly in the years since that team rose to prominence, it was a thing of its time, but defending and attacking at set-pieces requires the same core attributes.

… but then again BR would probably still be here had we bought him (Castagne)

    ———————–

Undoubtedly, BR was a top manager. But when he absconded, the league title was by no means a done deal. Neil Lennon is due a great deal of credit for that.

I agree with everything you say, but this is Scotland, not Ireland.

The livelihoods of all the population must now be a determining factor in decisions.

However you are in Ireland, not in a one-party state run by a Ceauşescu-like husband & wife team, nor is your government totally & constantly wrapped-up in constitutional issues, to the detriment of the majority of your population.

Being different & scoring points off the UKGOV is the SNP modus operandi, so who knows what will happen….of course all this against the backdrop of Scotland being by far the worst performer on Covid in the UK & ROI.

  3. See heart allegedly trying to avoid paying 30% sell on on hickey by getting a large loan fee followed by a small transfer fee, keep it classy hearts lol!! Celtic’s good faith getting thrown back in their faces. They truely are sevco’s twins.

Question is if loan agreement is in any way connected to the sale contract is that not leaving this open to legal challenge? In effect the loan agreement is part of the sales agreement. Wee budges will be going ba k to court me think, women loves throwing money away

St Stivs…….. Charlie Gallagher European Cup winning squad, Paddy Turner. Played for Republic.

    ________________

Charlie Gallagher was a sublime player. Bob Kelly bought Paddy Turner from Morton on the back of one good game against Celtic at Cappielow. That’s the way Bob did it then. Paddy was seldom seen after.

It won’t work. The word loan is colloquial for a “temporary transfer”.

The sum of the two will determine Celtic’s settlement. Lawwell & Co are not daft, we will be fully covered – rest assured.

    Yes that is my top.

Very popular in Clydebank where Scotland GAA team play. Fastest growing sport in Clydebank for participation. Schools recruitment campaign has paid off. 👍

  7. Brilliant.

I totally applaud whoever was behind this protest against the genocidal state of Israel.

    Very well done💪✊

    Totally agree.

on some political, social, moral issues/debates you just have to pick a side and get on with the fight.

in my opinion (as my daughter always makes me say!)

Indy, Brexit, Covid management etc have enough grey areas to have a good debate, not fall out and maybe alter one’s position slightly

on Palestine/ vs Israel, BLM vs MAGA, Conservative vs Socialist, welfare state vs tickle down economics; you have to pick a side and do whatever you feel is right to defend that position or cause. You cannot debate

Anyway Scotland 2-1 Israel for me tonight as a prediction

  10. Must confess to being disappointed in the scenes at Hampden.

Would much rather keep politics away and use football as a force for good.

    Appreciate others points of view

  11. Uncle Jimmy

To the poor besieged people in Palestine our solidarity is definitely a force for good.

We stood against the apartheid state of South Africa to bring pressure and should do likewise against Israel.

  12. Read on another blog that Leeds might pay £15 mill for Kent.

I’m biased of course but really? For Ryan Kent? No sign of English football developing any sense at this point.

    Crazy.

  13. Big Wavy

The Apartheid comparison is an interesting one.

Must admit, were I any of the following, and had to live the middle east, I’d want it to be in Israel

    Christian

    Jewish

    Female

    Gay

It’s odd that we ignore some nations atrocities, whilst challenging others.

Anyway, let’s get the games started.

Useful run outs and no injuries for all Celts please

  14. Uncle Jimmy,

Some horrible regimes in the Middle East (many adored by the establishment in the UK) and maybe some of us can hold that thought AND be opposed to the treatment of the entire Palestinian people, especially with Israel in town.

  15. Coneybhoy

Couldn’t agree more – people should stick by their principles – however in Scotland today there are those to whom Groucho Marx fits very snuggly – “these are my principles, but, if you don’t like them, I have others”

I believe in a vibrant distinctly Scottish Scotland. We are in a fantastic position to achieve this within the 6th largest economy in the world.

We have the most powerful devolved law-making government in the history of the democratic world.

The SNP, because they are more interested in flags division & hatred of all things British, have asked UKGOV not to transfer a number of these important powers, some being directly related to social security issues..

SNP have neither the nous, nor, interest in making Scotland a vibrant country. Until they came on the scene, Scotland was always recognised in the upper-echelons of world education. I, and others like me, were the first in our working-class families to go to university – in those days only around 5% were fortunate enough to be accepted. Now we are falling so fast down EVERY league table in the world – as Professor of Education at Edinburgh University, Lindsay Patterson, put it recently, “we are stagnating in mediocrity”

I believe in a two-state solution to the Israel/Palestinian problem – there can be no other way. Neither side can wish the other away.

Israel is a democracy, surrounded by hostile states who don’t believe in the word – that’s the main reason its finger is constantly ‘on the trigger’, and why it make too many hardline choices. However facing extinction every day from a dozen neighbouring states who believe you have no right to exist, may go some way to explain this, but not to excuse it.

The majority of Palestinians are under the heel of Hamas, and with Hezbollah ‘up the road’ in Lebanon, the place is a powder-keg. These terrorist organisations don’t want peace, their empires would crumble in that event.

Every decent thinking Scot should be ashamed of the anti-Israel graffiti that covers part of Hampden Park – what on earth will our players, Bitton & ElHamed think?

Finally, will we get a reaction from the SNP, after all it is their cyberfans & Tartan army who will be there tonight.

They are chomping on the bit to get Yumsa”s Hate Speech Bill on the statute – here tonight is a prime example of the worst kind of sectarian/rascist slurs right under their noses.
