Our major events venue, Adidas backfire, KR nerves

628

Despite their mid-season status, KR Reykjavik should offer little genuine challenge to Celtic’s squad of Champions League experienced professionals.  Still, the nerves tingle a little seeing a new management team lead the squad out of Glasgow Airport this morning.

Hopefully we have six qualifying games ahead.  Where we sit right now, chances of qualification are high, but far from assured.  There is a lot of work ahead.

It will be fantastic to see Martin O’Neill back at Celtic Park to lead Ireland against Scotland in the nations’ Euro 2016 qualifier.  Seeing the traditional away side of the stadium covered in green, while Scotland fans occupy the bulk of the stadium, will provide an interesting photo opportunity.  Apart from the ‘doe a dear’ lot, it’s likely to be a wall-to wall Celtic fan event.  Good to see Roy Keane back too.  In the away dug-out.

Hosting Scotland-England a few days later will cement the stadium’s position as a major event venue after a year of unique opportunities.

One of Adidas’ World Cup sponsor properties was to name and present Player and Goalkeeper of the Tournament.  What could go wrong?  Dragging the Adidas-sponsored and clearly embarrassed Lionel Messi up the stairs to receive his award looked contrived.  Despite reaching the final and, at last, building a World Cup goals tally worthy of comment (5 across 3 tournaments), Leo wasn’t even Argentina’s best player.

These awards are subjective, so there are no right or wrong decisions, but this one brought Adidas derision.

Delighted for Germany. The demographics are moving against European football but the continental game has never been as strong.

Many thanks to everyone who bid on the auction or bought a raffle ticket for the signed canvasses last week.  The raffle raised £604 and was won by CQN legend, Kolnbhoy.  Funds from both canvasses are going to Glasgow the Caring City and The Cookie Jar Foundation.

    Aye,fair point.

As you know,my main bugbear with PL has been his relationship with the fans, and that springs from how he handled the UEFA charge from the Rennes match.

He thought it an ideal opportunity to give the GB a bloody nose, refused to even appeal it,and it backfired on him.

    And,more importantly,the club.

I’ll give him 10/10 for his financial prudence though I disagree with how he has achieved that, but for a million a year I would expect a fella who can at least stand up for our club.

    Crap jokes notwithstanding.

I didnae watch a single game as I’m fed up with FIFA

Just my flapping of a butterfly’s wings,of course. No great shakes.

But awarding the player of the tournament to Messi is only perverse if you view it as being an award to the player of the tournament.

    It wasn’t.

It was an award to the Adidas-sponsored player of the tournament.

Big business is killing football. And it is now making a joke of it.

How about giving plaudits to individuals and company’s who pay the most tax?

  6. Canamalar – from previous.

Totally agree. This is one area where there should be no special arrangements. Even if every request the club receive just now is justifiable, there should be a correctly documented paper trail.

I’m playing a bit of Devil’s Advocate in this because occasionally there is an air of ‘every single fan is innocent, and no arrests are justified’ about some of the postings on the topic. That’s not aimed at you btw, just a general comment.

    weeminger,

I thought everyone was innocent till proven guilty ?

And if that is the case then that paper trail should be enforced for every request.

But we know the board consider everyone guilty till proved innocent from the evidence of their action against supporter who are charged or even complained about, they are banned from Celtic Park till the charges are answered and even when proven not guilty still have to go begging the board to get back, that IMO is an outrage.

I think it’s more about the contrived award mate rather than anti Messi.

Klose became the world cup top scorer, the Mexican keeper was astounding, the German keeper was brilliant etc……………I don’t think Messi was the tournament stand-out, great player that he is.

  17. I thought Messi was good but not spectacular. When opponents know that he is the man threat he is always going to be heavily marked – but he did produce a lot of the few moments of genuine skill in the knock out stages.

The most effective or influential players of the tournament were probably Mascherano and Schweinsteiger.

Must surprising star of the world cup for me was Ron Vlaar. Any time I saw him play for Villa he looked pretty dodgy, but he was immense for the Dutch.

I though p67 was dead clear, the player involved is insignificant it was a sponsor issue, no ?

On the face of it I totally agree with you.

This kind of has its roots in the whole remand system though, which I have deep seated issues with.

I can see where the club might worry about somebody offending again (assuming they did the first time) however, I think they should only be excluded if the charge is of a violent or directly abusive (ie bigotry targeted directly towards a player or individual). If it’s some kind of general song type incident it seems ridiculous to keep them out.

Which will bring us back to innocent till proven guilty, personally I dont recall many in fact any incidents of violent conduct but every single person who is banned is treated as though that was their offence.
