Patterson sale confirms onerous task for Celtic

199

Selling a squad player for a figure of around £11m is good business in anyone’s book, doubly so for Newco.  The anticipated money for Nathan Patterson, on top of the £4.5m for their management team from Aston Villa, will cover at least 9 months of their losses this season.  They may even break even for the first season in their history.

There will be limited impact on team performance this season, 20-year-old Patterson has hardly featured, with penalty kick taker James Tavernier preferred at right back.  Tavernier’s peak is already behind him, the pain of losing Patterson will be realised when Tavernier remains at right back well into his decline.

That pain is so distant right now it is irrelevant.  Newco need to raise money to pay their bills to finish the season, Everton’s cash will help here.  They need to sell – more than this – in order to avoid Uefa Financial Fair Play inhibitions. If they can raise enough cash to finish the season, they will be able to spend some of that money without affecting their immediate FFP status, so they could even be stronger for the remainder of the season than they would be if they retain Patterson.

Celtic have had a great transfer window so far, but that six point gap at the top of the table remains onerous.  It will take an enormous effort to overcome.

  1. The science is the same in Newcastle, Carlisle, Edinburgh or Glasgow. According to Jason Leitch we may not have large gatherings until April ?????

2 years ago some of us questioned about some individuals not wanting to relinquish control. Emergency powers should not be given carte blanche.

  2. This talk of any extension of the ridiculous ban on football supporters attending games beyond the 17th Jan is utterly insane.

Can anyone tell me of anyone they know who has had this omicron and had anything other than a very mild flu or cold at very worst ?

Hospital ICU numbers are so much lower than normal for flu at this time of year in Scotland that they won’t even share them.

Any talks of not playing football in front of crowds must surely be wrong.

Or else maybe we cancel football during the winter in future completely in case anyone catches a clod or gets a bad cough.

  3. I reckon scottish football could really benefit from brexit based on the current visa set up. I hope the more restrictive work permit rules in English football sees more english clubs paying the English player premium for scottish, welsh and Irish players due to their British status.

The spfl has just become the easiest place for English clubs to pick up players outside the UK. Scottish clubs with succesful youth set up and smart non uk signing could make a killing while supplementing their teams with non-uk players not available to their English counterparts.

Its a win win for the spfl clubs if they realise the potential gains to be had. An increase on funding of the back of this would likely result in better product and preformances in European football which in turn would result in more income for participating clubs and a more competitive league.

The Lowland league appears to be carrying on through the current restrictions. Gretna 2008 won today and Caledonian Braves played and won on Ne’erday.

We’re scheduled to play the Braves on Sunday at Penny Cars Stadium, 3pm. I checked Celtic’s website for buy and print option but nothing doing this morning.

Then I tried the extreme action, for me, of the Kerrydale Street forum for any chatter about it. Thirty seconds, then my eyes glazed over at their facebook, google, email account options. Exit left.

Caledonian Braves are a rebrand of Edusport, based in Strathclyde Park.

I can’t believe we have a lead article and pages of comments, spearheaded by a very jumpy Madmitch, simply because Rangers might be selling a peripheral player for £10m. I could perhaps see the point if they were BUYING a player for £10m.

What the hell is going on here?

  9. BBC Sports is now in the realms of fantasy. Can anyone believe this utter nonsense?

“They either have to play Patterson regularly and hope he would recoup a bigger fee with more games under his belt (more akin to the £25m Celtic got from Arsenal for Kieran Tierney), or act now and potentially free up funds for Van Bronckhorst.”

  10. Paul leads with:

“Patterson sale confirms onerous task for Celtic”

whilst a BBC always very keen to promote good `news` about its team says nothing. Hmmm…

  11. Martim you carry mate.you are wrong fella.

glue comment uncalled for.no debating wi you eh.

  12. Juco James adamant that the Patterson sale demonstrates that the Celtic board have allowed Sevco to get the upper hand financially on Celtic.

I’ve a lot of time for his game analysis but in all honesty, what an absolute load of horse manure from the man today.

  13. Hi MARTIM1980.

Not getting involved in any arguments, or commenting on any specific points being made.

However, I just thought it might be helpful to confirm – for the record – that TINYTIM is absolutely, without a shred of doubt, a Tim.

    100%.

A rather hefty Henrik second from the right in the back row ,

  15. Yup, Having had a drink with him at a CQN Golf Day, I can verify that Tiny Tim is more of a Tim than he is Tiny :-)))

  16. In any competitive environment, its essential to be aware of what the competition are doing. Whether supermarkets, taxi firms or football clubs.

To suggest otherwise, is short sighted nonsense.

Equally, we cannot influence 3rd party transactions.

I sense a nervousness in Celtic cyber space today as we have the financial upper hand and have been massively superior at player trading. Huns selling a squad player for somewhere close to 8m will cause some raised eyebrows.

Let the huns sell who they can. Our focus should be on strengthening the spine of the team and ensuring Ange is surrounded by the strongest footballing operation we can put in place.

Concentrate on what we can control.

  18. amazing there

from here – its 9 mill with add ons.

from clyde – its 12 mill with 4 mill add ons.

from alex rae, its a fee is the stratosphere and its a record for the foootball club.

what ever it is it does beat the record fee recieved – was it £400,000 for barry mckay.

  19. Johnny Owen was on talk sport today, with a couple of guests, tough subject of Anne drama, and the failures of hillsborough the guest was brilliant, absolutely superb.

this was folowed by discussion about the oldest ficture in world football – Notts County 1862 v Shef wed 1864

led on to the Nottm Forest calling out “the rangers” for the 150th anniversay pr garbage

    fella said

“the new glasgow derby is the youngest in the world”

    very very funny

  20. just watched wolves beat Man U ,well deserved, all this thems talk on here made me log out , boring boring boring.

  21. So the Wolves v Man U is boring ,I’ll need to go to spec savers or have I been watching another game ,Incidentally whoever scouted some of these Wolves players really has a eye for good players.see some are still obsessed with Sevco 👀👀👀

  22. Man U look like they don’t have an idea what they are doing, if that is what a coaching genius brings…

  23. Regards this being a sign of them gaining on us financially its important to remember that since both teams’ last sets of accounts we have sold players for the total value of £33m, for probably £30m book profit, while they appeared to have been able to book £9m in profit. At least 20m difference in both teams accounts.

Unless they sell before the 30 June they’ll be looking at another loss this season, we’ll report a big profit. Assuming Covid doesn’t keep fans out for too long, if it does they’re in big trouble.

You could certainly argue that actually making some money from player trading does suggest they’re starting to behave in a more responsible way but parity, never mind being ahead, does appear to be a long way off.

Even if they win the league and we don’t qualify for the CL the difference in revenue from European football is likely to be around £10m, which doesn’t make up for the difference in domestic football revenues and commercial income.

They’ll need cl football and to make more than us from players sales, not just next season but every season.

The next few Celtic B fixtures are:-

9th Jan 3pm vs Caledonia Braves @ Penny Cars Stadium, Airdrie

15th Jan 3pm vs Gretna @ Raydale Park

    29th Jan 1pm vs Bonnyrig @ Airdrie

12th Feb 3pm vs Vale of Leithen @ Airdrie

    19th Feb 3pm vs Gala @ Gala

27th Feb 3pm vs Stirling Uni @ Airdrie

I could make the match vs Caledonia but I don’t fancy a trip to Gretna. The game vs table top Bonnyrig would be good but it clashes with our home game vs Dundee.

I could make the Vale of Leithen match but Gala match clashes with a home tie vs Ross County. The Stirling uni game would be tight as we have a midday kick off in Edinburgh that day so a Tim friendly pub in Airdrie for viewing the match would be needed.

Let me know if you are up for any of them

  25. And selling a promising 20 year old is not a sign that they’re going to emulate us in the transfer market

    All 23 or under

Mcgeady was 24 when he left

Forster was 26 which is very young for a keeper

Hagi’s 23, the rest are 25 or older. Too old for big money moves to the EPL. They’ll have their suitors but not at the same amounts we’ve been getting
