Patterson sale confirms onerous task for Celtic

199

Selling a squad player for a figure of around £11m is good business in anyone’s book, doubly so for Newco.  The anticipated money for Nathan Patterson, on top of the £4.5m for their management team from Aston Villa, will cover at least 9 months of their losses this season.  They may even break even for the first season in their history.

There will be limited impact on team performance this season, 20-year-old Patterson has hardly featured, with penalty kick taker James Tavernier preferred at right back.  Tavernier’s peak is already behind him, the pain of losing Patterson will be realised when Tavernier remains at right back well into his decline.

That pain is so distant right now it is irrelevant.  Newco need to raise money to pay their bills to finish the season, Everton’s cash will help here.  They need to sell – more than this – in order to avoid Uefa Financial Fair Play inhibitions. If they can raise enough cash to finish the season, they will be able to spend some of that money without affecting their immediate FFP status, so they could even be stronger for the remainder of the season than they would be if they retain Patterson.

Celtic have had a great transfer window so far, but that six point gap at the top of the table remains onerous.  It will take an enormous effort to overcome.

  1. Good for the losses, good for FFP and a real bonus for them to sell a player who’s that unimportant for such a big amount. They’ll be able to add a couple of players to freshen up the squad in this window without it affecting the first team. Their good luck continues.

Not so great for cashflow. If the fee is 9m, it’s almost certainly going to be paid in at least 3 installments. If we go until the end of Feb with 500 fans that’s six home games, including a Scottish cup tie and the Dortmund game, neither of which, I’d guess, are on the season book. That’s more than 3m in match day revenue down the swanny.

We might get back to full houses before then but they’ll be extremely worried if we don’t. BHC for any length of time could be a disaster for them. The Patterson cash could be a lifesaver, but I wouldnt them to spend any serious cash with it hanging over their heads

  2. So I’ve heard anything from 9 to 16 million for the great right back !!!…whatever the price big Mike will be licking his lips !!!……..the price also says everything that’s wrong with the EPL and Everton in particular!!

“So I’ve heard anything from 9 to 16 million for the great right back !!!…whatever the price big Mike will be licking his lips !!!……..the price also says everything that’s wrong with the EPL and Everton in particular!!”

I know this is what has been reported, but, this does not add up! A kid, who is contracted till this summer and can sign a pre-contract this month and he and his agent can pocket most of the money is giving it to Sevco and only taking the usual cut! An AGENT!! giving up money, a multi-billionaire paying out millions for a Kid who he can sign for nothing! Somebody help me out here!! por cierto….

  4. if Patterson is available for free in the summer , this deal looks very very odd considering he is potential and hasn’t featured consistently in Scotland.

  5. Everton have spent over half a billion on players since their new owner took up the reins in 2016.

They are an absolute basket case with the associated underperformance to throw into the mix.

That should tell you all you need to know, whatever the price you feel comfortable accepting in your head for a decent up and coming RB.

  7. No, this is about saving face having to sell the jewel in the crown, and hoping if they say those types of figures then the hordes will think it’s better for the club if they sell him. He has probably told them that he’s going to sign a pre-contract and they’ve asked him to go now so they can get some money in and have negotiated with his agent a cut of the fee for going along with it, por cierto.

Well, that’s my scenario shot down in flames then!! :)))), but, I still believe it’s nowhere near the money stated. They could buy a proven defender to keep them out of the championship for that kind of money, which would save them, millions in the long run. por cierto

  10. We won’t know how much Everton paid for Patterson until Everton publish it in their accounts, they publish on time, audited accounts unlike the Tribute Act back of a fag packet and the SMSM wishful thinking economics

celtic40me- ST money is banked,no big losses for league games

Their capacity for home league games is over 5000 more than their season ticket numbers

They lose out on all sorts of match day revenues if. there are no fans in

The Scottish cup game and the home Dortmund won’t be on the season book. the Dortmund game in particular is a big loss.

2 months with no cash coming in is a long time

  12. Celtic buy three players and it gets some negative press in bonnie Scotland. Sevco look like selling a promising Scottish player and it’s great news.

I wonder how it would be reported if we were the sellers and they were the buyers. 🤔

  13. Rafa Benitez has just presided over the worst Everton run in 27 years. He has just received the dreaded vote of confidence.

Patterson will not be the last of his January signings. His job and credibility is on the line and there is millions available.

What a player is actually worth means nothing, its what someone is willing to pay that counts.

Everton, arguably the original BOE club just reverting to type.

PS : we are debating this because its the topic of Paul’s article.

  14. The only way that The Darnel will have major cutbacks is if they fail to gain entry to next seasons CL group stage.

That is extremely unlikely to happen .

We need to beat them in the 3 remaking league fixtures and then win all of our remaining fixtures .

That is very unlikely to happen .

This time next year their finances will be in a better shape than ours.

Unless we qualify for the CL group stages .

As Scotland moves towards being a totalitarian state, the chances of 60,000 being permitted into Celtic Park appears increasingly remote. Even with the majority of adults being triple vaccinated.

  26. Look out for the words ‘undisclosed fee’ you’re unlikely to find them in SMSM but they’ll inflate it, like a floating pitch. The unknown Chinese team didn’t bid £XXXX Million for Morelos either, Yada Yada Yada Yada SMSM fees are easily made up when the Rainjurz don’t do, never mind publish ‘accounts’.
