Periods of poor passing

154

It is a classic fallacy of Scottish football.  No sooner does someone utter that a team’s second 11 could win the league, they are brought down to earth.  Ninth placed Motherwell failed to take anything from Celtic Park on Saturday, but the champions were well below par for the second successive game.

If we were at the Plastic Pasta Stadium in Livingston, or bumpy Tannadice, the blame would immediately go to the surface, but even though Celtic Park looked immaculate, our passing was poorly executed.

Ange Postecoglou has already pondered this problem this season.  Three of our four opening league fixtures were punctuated by periods of poor passing: Aberdeen, Ross County and Hearts.  The system then caught fire against Dundee United, Ross County in the League Cup, Newco and for 50 minutes against Real Madrid.

There were periods of worry in the game against Shakhtar Donetsk that, remarkably, St Mirren were able to make more of.  Motherwell may well have watched and learned.  Wednesday will inevitably inject change into Celtic veins.  There will be more space in advanced position and let’s hope any sense of casualness will evaporate.

  1. Headers (Heedies)

I was telling my grandson about how we used to play headers in the close and between the lamp-posts and a jacket on the sidewalk. Do any of the kids still play this?

Does anyone else remember this game? It was about the same time as ‘Leave the den’ and ‘kick the can’.

  2. so saddened by Neustadt’s passing. One can easily imagine his easy-going humour being a foundation for a great many friends. My thoughts are with his family and those around him. A lovely contributor to This Dear Green Place.

    Awfy sad.

The game we played more often was ‘kerby’ – a low-fi version of the modern crossbar challenge. You had to chip the ball across the street from opposing pavements and look to get a rebound (a kerby I spose). That resulted in a goal/point. Mibby I recall getting 2 points if you got a kerby off a volley?? Happy times.

  9. Apologies.

Just logged on and posted and did not read back.

Sincere condolences to Neustadt Braw’s family. May you Rest In Peace, Andrew.

  10. Condolences to the family and friends of Andrew Griffen. He used to post great contributions on the blog back in the day. Also nice to see a few old names remembering him.

    Yip.

In my fitba watching room cleaning the fish tank right now. Temps dropping here so the wee attic starts getting some love and used again.

My good Kentucky lass was chatting about your good lady and friends last night as we sat around the fire in the back yard. A controlled fire, not the house burning down, don’t call the fire brigade. All is well.

    Awfy braw.

The hours devoted to Kerby. Our wee street could have been an Olympic venue. OK, perhaps not but conditions were good.

Was a point if it came back across and 2 points if you caught it and you would move to the middle line. That’s where the points were made!

  12. Sincere condolences to the family and friends of Andrew Griffin, I spent many a night loving his own style posts. Braw. Back to lurking. HH

  13. Remembering Kerby,

    As with other contributors …

Rules in my street in North Belfast) which were few , were very similar..

    (

    * Hit Opposite Kerb = 1 point

    * Hit both kerbs ( doubler = 2 points)

    * Catch rebound before it hits ground allowed to advance to half way , multiple free throws ( for as long as you kept scoring)…. However

    * Once you missed from halfway, your opponent would grab the ball and throw it at you , you had to get back to the safety of your own kerb before he hit you with the ball. ( being struck in this fashion resulted in loss of all your points)

Kept the games going for ages.

    Happy days.

    Weird and tough day.

  16. AIPPLE and ONLOOKER…

You blokes were patently playing a more sophisticomated version of kerby than us on the soo’side.

We never advanced off our respective kerbs; but am sure I also recall that there was a bonus point for volleying it if it came all the way back to your own side.

It was a game of skill and chance:

The skill in trying to chip at the right height and velocity.

The chance in ensuring you didn’t get run over by passing cars ;)

  17. Hope this doesn’t miss the mark.

This poem seems appropriate for NBraw

    When Great Trees Fall

    Maya Angelou

    When great trees fall,

    rocks on distant hills shudder,

    lions hunker down

    in tall grasses,

    and even elephants

    lumber after safety.

    When great trees fall

    in forests,

    small things recoil into silence,

    their senses

    eroded beyond fear.

    When great souls die,

    the air around us becomes

    light, rare, sterile.

    We breathe, briefly.

    Our eyes, briefly,

    see with

    a hurtful clarity.

    Our memory, suddenly sharpened,

    examines,

    gnaws on kind words

    unsaid,

    promised walks

    never taken.

    Great souls die and

    our reality, bound to

    them, takes leave of us.

    Our souls,

    dependent upon their

    nurture,

    now shrink, wizened.

    Our minds, formed

    and informed by their

    radiance,
 fall away.

We are not so much maddened

as reduced to the unutterable ignorance
 of

    dark, cold

    caves.

    And when great souls die,

    after a period peace blooms,

    slowly and always

    irregularly. Spaces fill

    with a kind of

    soothing electric vibration.

    Our senses, restored, never

to be the same, whisper to us.

    They existed. They existed.

We can be. Be and be

    better. For they existed.

And PMcS adding another string to his IT bow …

What could possibly go wrong with this level of gossip?

QP are really upping their game regarding looking for new youth talent.

PMcS seems to be one public face of their efforts.

Heavy duty analytics behind it as well.

Clyde give the impression of being the happy hoofers.

Crownpoint project might just be spoiling a local well.

QP seem to be getting all of their ducks in a row for some serious growth.

  21. Being brought up on a new council estate in the late 50s, kick the can was popular because you could have 20 kids playing it.

Didn’t play much kerby because we used to play footie on the waste ground close to us. Sometimes the primary school pitches until the janitor came and chased us off.
