Planning and process behind Celtic win

168

Celtic yet again squeeze out a late winner with the title delicately poised.  To some it looks like luck is on our side, it’s not.  When your top striker is out and your stand-in scores a hattrick to win a game 3-2, you are watching the consequence of a planned deployment of resources.  We compete against a club that are the antithesis of a planned deployment of resources.  They can lose tens of millions and win, but that does not make them right.

Football can break your heart on the bounce of a ball, but what you witnessed at Celtic Park yesterday was the result of process.  In the four games since bouncing Motherwell across the Fir Park pitch, form has been mixed.  Defeat in Europe, a laggardly performance in the Scottish Cup, and two 3-2 wins are far different from convincing, but the plans made to win the league this season look sound.

The Giorgos Giakoumakis hattrick game will be a minor detail in our memory come May, it is not even in our top two most dramatic late wins of the season.  Yesterday, it felt like the world, well done, Giorgos.

Listen to me, should have said, Giorgos Giakoumakis first hattrick game.

  1. the upcoming kids will have thier heads turned same as established players, the riches on offer in other leagues are unbeleivable.

3 youths in our extended family play in academy teams, one at murray park, cappielow and hamilton.

murray park youngster is only 10, they get flown up and down to games down south, father has been approach by southampton, city and united. relocation of the whole family is offered.

he has said no so far, for me its just a matter of time.

its not about our kids breaking through, i bet sometimes Mickey wishes he had not stayed,

    its all relative.

  2. apologies, posted on FF, I have added in thems

After 27 games last year the table looked like this:

    thems 75 points

    Celtic 58 points

After the same 27 games this year we now look like this:

    Celtic 66 points (+8)

    thems 63 points (-12)

This represents a swing of 20 points.

We won the league after 32 games last year.

This is why I’m getting worried about the destination of this year’s title when there’s been such a significant shift.

They have unfortunately improved and become more consistent while our own consistency, a major factor in last year’s success, has deserted us.

I still believe we can, and will win the title. I’m just hoping we manage to unlock some of last year’s determination before it’s too late.

Agree with all of that and, in context, I was really impressed with the efforts of Dundee yesterday, and of teams such as St Mirren.

We have significant advantages in terms of funding, support, facilities, etc. but the gap – in individual games – isn’t as wide as some outside observers might expect.

Like you – pleased when teams such as these win cups, games versus bigger teams, etc. (as long as not at our own direct expense, of course!)

  4. Watching sportscene. O’Riley was fouled at their first goal. Literally held and then pulled out of the way.

Still, poor defensive shape that left a player over.

  6. King Lubo,

Whilst drooling over a “Thuggish stopper” in our midfield, how many Yellow\Reds would he receive?.

I think we are better with a,passing, good footballer like Biton there.

Look at the cards he gets without the nasty bit.

can anyone give an example of a player who left our academy, went to another club, and became an established first team player at that club, and indeed went onto a sterling career ?

    ####

Andy Robertson’s career hasn’t turned out too badly. Whether he actually satisfies your rather particular conditions I couldn’t say.

  8. Yep,I would like to see Jullien and CCV together, with Star felt on the bench. But it would need to be a fully match fit Jullien.Anything else would be unfair to Jullien.

This kind of talk is a carbon copy of the Taylor stuff.Yes,maybe Star felt makes the odd mistake, but over the 90 minutes he puts in a great shift and tries his heart out. There are CHs in the EPL no better, for making the odd mistake. At the moment, until Jullien is fit enough to play,Carl is the best we have.Same with Taylor.100% effort every game.Might not be enough, but at the moment, again the best we have.We can change neither,so I don’t really see the point of the continual slating of players who we are hoping will help us win this league

Really is a ridiculous way of supporting the team.

  9. Aberdeen first goal is a foul, third man block

The type you can’t even do in Rugby

    Dundee yesterday exactly the same

Sportscene say its cute, not a foul

The brutal foul on gg was also ignored

A dreadful foul similar to the assault by alloa (managed by former cheats thug) player on mc g, should have been a pen and red card

Refs playing crucial part in the way our games develop

Ps can’t believe Madden didn’t give pen to the cheats

  10. Madden could quite easily have given them 2 penalties on Sunday. No doubt about it.

He could also have Red Carded Jack, but it would not have affected the result.

    We were fortunate.

    This time.

  11. park the bus 442 on

John Collins, Kevin Gallagher, Joe Miller, etc, left Celtic boys club to different careers, before returning to Celtic in the cases of, JC and JM, Billy McNeill (RIP) tried to sign KG but it didn’t get over the line.

  12. park the bus 442 on

With crowds of 20,000+ Celtic were the best team in Europe.

With crowds of 60,000+ it looks like Celtic could end up as Euro 3rd level/rate punch bags.

  13. JPH,

Yes the ones you mention were bad,but the most ludicrous decision on Sunday was the offside given against Maeda. That it came to nothing anyway, has probably spared the blushes.

You won’t see a more obvious onside the rest of this season. If you had put the VAR lines across,he would have looked as if he was in his own half !!!!!!!!.

  14. I get that young boys are attracted to the big bright lights of the big 5 leagues, but its crazy bad when shite like that happens

  15. Watched the game so many Times. I hope our Board just say No to any huns @ Celtic Park. I’ve still not got my voice back!!!!

If you are a wee bit weird like me.

There is radio commentary online by mainstream BBC, the annoying Pat Nevin is involved but it wiz a Magical Night.

Hopefully it will be a Hun free Celtic Park again and Everyone can get a few sherberts safely.

  16. Fix a defence that is the best in the country?

What happens if you fix the broken part but in doing so break other parts?

So we reduce the number of goals conceded from set pieces, but then lose many more from open play.

I’m happy to keep scoring more goals than the opposition and not care how we lose goals.

  17. Regards youth players, I know celtic take young players from other clubs so can’t complain when it happens to us, but it makes you wonder how long it will be until club’s in smaller nations decide to disband their academies all together.

It is entirely possible continued poaching of players in smaller nations could come at the expense of the overall development of young players in smaller nations as it reaches a stage where there is no point throwing money at your youth when you lose them as teenagers.

Just another example of the short sitedness of the governing body.

you mean the bhoy that went to Queens Park ?

he did not go from Celtic Academy to Liverpool.

  20. Collins and Gallagher famously never played at youth level for anything called celtic, Hutchie Vale and Drumchapel (maybe)

Joe Miller, famously, was offered to Ferguson at Aberdeen by his own uncle, who said go there not to celtic.

so typing shit once again Gabby

  21. Sad to see young lads leaving Celtic without moving up to first team. However in this ‘material world’, they will be thinking – “I’m not ready for the first team, so I’m in the queue – why not get in the Bayern, or, Liverpool queue, and triple my wages”.

In their position, what would you do?

These days honours and international caps are not the measures of success – lucrative contracts and a mega bank balance are!

  22. Saint Stivs

I was of the opinion that John Collins played for Celtic Boys Club.

Then drifted away after an injury,

Coming from the borders he then went on and played with Hutchison Boys Club ,then on to Hibernian FC

Not sure who the main guy was but I loved how he kept asking Roddy Forsyth for his thoughts when t was going so bad for thems.

  24. SAINT – I see you got us Andy Robertson smartarses on a technicality.

But there’s wriggle room in the Q you posed. Tho if you’d said went STRAIGHT to another club – you’d be right. Robbo did leave our club and go – via Lesser Hampden – to the Pool.

Your point remains valid; there’s few academicals that’s peaked post us. Tho Chris Burke, James McCarthy, Jack Hendry, and Aaron Hickey all did a meander after being academicals then, eventually, finding their sweet spots.

As a young lad, George Best was turned down by the Northern Ireland club Glentoran because he was “far too skinny”. As George himself once said “there was more fat on a chip”.
