Policing and Celtic

830

I spoke to Celtic today about various questions surrounding stewarding and policing in and around the stadium.

The club would not be specific on any particular incident but I got a run down on various instances (alleged assault, vandalism) when Celtic have responded to police requests for identifying information on fans.  Celtic said the police can only ask for identifying information if they allege a crime has been committed and Celtic’s safety certificate, allowing them to open the stadium, depends on the club complying with police requests if they allege a crime has been committed.

The club were clear that complying with police requests on such instances is not a matter of choice for Celtic, “It happens, it has always happened, and it happens at every other club in the UK”.

I asked if the club target fans and ask the police to arrest them.  I was told this is ludicrous to suggest the police do the bidding of the club (I was also laughed at for making the suggestion).  Celtic can revoke tickets and stadium access without recourse to the police.

My conversation happened before anyone at Celtic heard last night’s podcast from the HomeBhoys but I asked specific questions about the red haired fan discussed who was allegedly brandishing a seat and was told no police request had been received in connection to him and that his details had therefore not been passed to the police.

I understand the club have met with various supporters’ groups and clarified these issues, as well as more general stadium safety matters, and that they will issue a statement later today in response to questions asked by the Celtic Trust, who I believe put many of these points in writing.

After speaking to Celtic I spoke to a police officer who is a regular Match Commander at SPL games (not Celtic games) who confirmed clubs would lose their safety certificate if they failed to cooperate with the police.

Having had the chance to put questions to Celtic I asked them give others the same opportunity and to unconditionally meet with any fans’ group with concerns on any of these matters. They assured me they would.

Just heard the special police squad set up to investigate the Gallowgate kettling are contacting those who complained- looks like they have had more complaints for this than they expected- and the man in charge is Chief Inspector Anthony ODonnell

Sounds like Peter will be attending George Square for a Huddle….

  8. The problem with the latest statement/answer given by Celtis is that they are still not answering specific questions.

If you look at Phil’s questions

    http://www.philmacgiollabhain.ie/reasonable-questions-remain-unanswered/

then look at the answer he got

    http://www.philmacgiollabhain.ie/statement-from-celtic-football-club/

its another bland piece of corporate pr. Ok it goes a bit further than previous two statement but why can’t they just answer the questions that are being asked?

Their lack of clarity is adding to the perception that they are not being entirely truthful.

  9. I’d like a simple Statement from the Board, saying that the Green Brigade are appreciated & welcome at Celtic Park.

Can’t believe Hanley has kept his place. He was nothing but a thug on Friday.

Surely Charlie should be centre half.

Lets see if McArthur can actually pass to a scottish player tonight. I have my doubts.

    Hun skelper

Yeah the sponsor ship deals just happen themselves and the winning team you mention didn’t bother with contract negotiations they just called NL to say they wanted to play for Celtic.

Not trying to say Lawwell is perfect, patently not, but some criticism is way over the top.

For example in the past few January transfer windows he cost us the league, ie the willo flood year.

Surely then the winning team you talk

about, he must be due credit there?

Murray and Masterton. The dynamic duo. You carved up the whole scottish game between you. You had it sussed. You were invincible.

Dodds on shortbread saying he hopes Dunfermline go into administration, NOT liquidation. Why not? What’s the difference? The club will still survive under liquidation, won’t it?

  13. I think Celtic would be more effective in defending the support if sections of that support desisted from deliberately breaking stadium regulations.

These regulations are not imposed by the club, but by the licensing authorities.

Of course, the puppet masters of the GB are quite willing for children to be criminalised in order to make some obscure point.

The ” atmosphere” they provide does not give them the right to make their own rules of conduct.

    On amore heartwarming note.

An Austrian couple, in Dublin for tonight’s game, were mugged and robbed of their cash, cards and other stuff, including their match tickets.

They came over on the strength of the reputation of the Irish fans reputation.

When the heard about their mishap, The Boys in Green supporters group, rallied round them, got them tickets and funds.

Surely pressure from MSP’s could try to force a Public Inquiry into Masterton , Murray and the Bank?

As you can see from the blog response it’s very difficult to respond to everyone’s points and comments. I am happy for this to be a first step which is the way I see it. Face to face as any negotiator knows, is when it’s dealt with and so I hope this is the beginning of a process.

On another note, ask the 7 if they are happy with the help given by Celtic without condemning said support. It would also be interesting to find out why the other 6 haven’t asked the club for help.

  21. When required and under the appropriate legislation third parties must comply by proving information in certain circumstances. If the Club are being asked under legislation for information that they must comply with then there is nothing the Club can do other than comply.

On the other hand under Data Protection Act (DPA)1998 exemptions, a data holder can be asked to release information for the prevention of crime and or pursuit of offenders. They will not breach the data protection principles if the choose to release information but there is no compulsion on them to release the information either. The exemptions are in accordance with Sections 29 (1) and (3) of the DPA.

    I know from personal experience.

The question to be answered is under what legislation are the Police asking for the information. Then you might have a clearer picture if the Club are colluding with the Police.

    Keep the Faith!

    If I must.

They encourage them in the standing issue.

Whether you agree with the no standing rule or not, it is a stadium rule.

They led them into a situation last week which gave the police the opportunity to flex their muscles against them, leading to some being intimidated and arrested.

These kids are acting under the direction ofbold fashioned guys who don’t have a platform of their own, hence, they use Celtic.

There have been plenty of opportunities to take the heat out of the situation, but they prefer to radicalise immature kids, and play the victim card.

It beggars belief that people who should know better, i.e. some of the posters on here, don’t recognise that, instead of using this unfortunate situation to indulge in board bashing in general and PL in particular.

  23. kikinthenakas, Shannon or Cork Airport are both about an hour from Clonmel. They are both small Airports and very easy to get in and out of. When were ye thinking of coming over and how many of ye are traveling. Maybe Facebook me the info as I’m off out to the Pub meeting up with Mick to watch the Ireland/Austria game.

  24. Evening all,

I have followed the club home and away for 20 years, I can count on one hand the trouble I have seen and its all been minor.

The GB are treated the way they are because they represent the normal working class youth of Glasgow, the working class that, in my opinion, the club would rather been seen and not heard. The statement from the club is just another example of the poor pr that is now all to common at Celtic. Our fans are being victimised on a weekly if not daily basis and the club have been way short in there condemnation of this. Their poor statements are only ever put out after pressure from individuals or groups call for them. Our fans deserve the the full and unequivocal support of our club.

Tread carefully Celtic, the outcome of this political game could end up being the worst result in our history.

    Hail Hail
