Political scammers one and all

Peter Lawwell’s comments on Friday that Celtic receive no support from Glasgow City or Scottish Government circles reflects years of plans being frustrated by incoherent rejections.

Were it not for the Commonwealth Games being hosted in the city in 2014, planning permission to redevelop the area to the front of Celtic Park would continue to be rejected. The reality that the Queen would drive past a derelict former school, with vegetation growing from every nook, was sufficient motivation for the Council to allow Celtic to remove the building and landscape the area.  You have Her Mag. to thank for the Celtic Way.

Celtic would like a fanzone. Somewhere you can congregate before a match, where you might even be able to visit a toilet, but the Council doesn’t want it. Planning permission is sought for the hotel. On the face of it, this is a fantastic initiative for a long-deprived area of the city, the Council should be doing their best to encourage Celtic into spending the money, not looking disinterested.

Then we have the proposed no parking zone, which would see it illegal for you to park within one mile of Celtic Park on match days. Parking would start at the one mile limit, but would surely extend a couple of miles beyond this before we are all accommodated. Public transport to and from the area is vastly under served, there simply isn’t the capacity to cope with many football fans. Your choice will be to walk miles to and from the game, or stop going.

The likely change of administration at the Council, from Labour to SNP isn’t necessarily going to help, either. A councillor from the latter camp raised concerns when Celtic asked for permission to build the Superstore, citing that it could damage trade going to local supermarkets.  This is the environment we have to operate in!

The Scottish Government set their faces to stone on the subject of Celtic when Alex Salmond decided to get involved in Scottish football in 2011, leaving us with the ludicrous Offensive Behaviour’ Act.

The Scottish Parliament voted to repeal this act last year, after countless football fans, and Celtic, campaigned on the issue. However, the will of the Scottish Parliament isn’t always respected by the Scottish Government, who ignored the vote, before setting their 2017 agenda on inducing moral outrage when the will of the Scottish Parliament is ignored.

The irony should be disappointing, but it’s not even surprising. Scammers, one and all.

A reminder that this year’s CQN Open Golf takes place at our usual Aberdour venue on Friday 28 July.  Walk with Shay and the Celtic FC Foundation are our primary beneficiaries.  Costs are £80 for the whole day (including golf) and £45 for evening-only guests.  Applications to cqnopen@gmail.com  .

An Australian psychologist says the conditions he witnessed at the Manus Island and Nauru offshore detention centres are the most demoralising he has ever seen in his 43-year career.

    Key points:

Mr Stevenson visited Manus, Nauru detention centres on 16 occasions during 2014/15

Says Peter Dutton “has no idea what it’s like” despite visit to Nauru

“$5 billion per year going into offshore detention,” he says

Psychologist and traumatologist Paul Stevenson has treated field trauma for 25 years — including in the aftermath of the Bali bombings and the Boxing Day tsunami — and visited the Manus Island and Nauru offshore detention centres on 16 occasions, for two to three weeks at a time, between 2014 and 2015.

” Why do they feel the need to extract another £2.5 to £3 million on top of what Brendan and the team have brought them via CL qualifaction and all the extra monies already extracted from gate receipts, sponsorship.”

Simple answer? I don`t know but I am willing to accept there may well be a good reason.

I don`t think TD was adopting an `I`m alright jack. ` attitude. He was , I believe, pointing out that this increase does not cause a problem to anyone he knows. That is the same for me.

I believe every pensioner can afford a ST if that is a priority over, say,a cigarette or a pint. Only a few can afford everything they would like .The rest of us prioritise. For me, it is a matter of degree.

It is to your credit that you are concerned about others but not agreeing with you on this matter does not make others self-centered.

It doesent affect me, my £10:00 I put away every week more than covers my ST, it’s how you use your own money, and discipline yourself, it was expected foe the price increases let’s not be silly , if you didn’t know it was coming then I’m afraid your in La la land, if it’s a case of I’m alright jack then fine , that’s because I govern my finances to suit my means and way of life, Iv gave up a few things so that I can buy my season ticket, and that’s my business, if I couldent afford it then I can’t get one, that’s life, I’m alright jack with that to, but don’t pull the pensioners card on my behalf I get along doing my own thing and telling no one in here what to do, but if someone wants to grab the moral high ground on the issue to suit an agenda then go right ahead, but your not talking for me or any pensioner Iv met.

I agree with the sentiments of your post. It was a good post with views that many will share. I sincerely hope we are not pricing ordinary supporters out.

    —————————————

How much is enough to watch domestic Scottish football? A very good question. I don’t know the answer, but I would suggest that we are close to maximum pricing for the ordinary fan.

I have a dilemma however. I realise that to get the best we have to pay the going rate. We reminiscence about our past achievments and we are hopeful and now confident of future glory.

But unfortunately in modern day football it all comes at a price. But who pays the price, ? Who can afford to pay the price. ? Who has the broadest shoulders ?

Not the ordinary fan, i would suggest.

I do not wish to see Paradise populated by only those on higher earnings who can afford numerous price increases; Those who have above average disposible incomes.

I am also uneasy about encouraging our fans to go into debt with a finance company to watch our team.I would prefer Celtic themselves to offer very low interest or ideally zero percent interest.

For the average family there is only so much money that can be responsibly allocated to football. Our custodians must and will realise that. Every possible source of income must be optimised prior to increasing the burden of average and below average earners ( Never mind the poorest who must never be forgotten about ). I do not think our club have done that.

Yes my friends we may still play to full houses despite this and future increases, but our famed Parkhead atmosphere could suffer, and we will increasingly join the Prawn Sandwich brigade.

For these reasons I think MWD has hit the nail right on the head.

Ha – were you one of the dozens he saved from the gallows pre 1965?

    Anecdotes;

Beltrami was a lifelong Celtic fan and maintained close relations with players and club for more than 50 years. He was in manager Jock Stein’s Lisbon hotel room in 1967, celebrating having won the European Cup, when the by-then engraved trophy was delivered to the hotel room in a tied-up box which Beltrami opened: “I was the only one with a pen-knife.”

How much in your opinion is enough? Is there a limit.

£30 or £50 increase a season or every other season on the face of it is not a major increase. But accumulating that over a period will impact others.

with success on the park and qualification to the riches of the CL there is no need for this increase, especially at this time. Cloaking it with good news shows the PLC up for what it is. In the last few seasons when there was season book price freezes these announcements were trumpeted without the need for cloaking. It was good news and welcome news. The fact they felt the need to cloak these announcements behind great news is why I called them dispicable human beings.

I stand by that as that is my opinion of them as individuals.

Now if they were to come out and let us know why there was a need for this increase and ask us still to support them due to the need for this increase without cloaking it then I would have more understanding of their need to increase as would everyone. I don’t believe there is a need to increase at this time in the face of record turnover and if there was then an explanation would be welcome.

I do think and opinion that it is selfish to consider only your own circumstance and excuse the increase that will likely impact some. But that’s society for you today. I’m alright Jack.

I do agree that if you can afford to give a up a pint or two a week to pay for your book then that is fair enough and a good life choice also. But what if you have to give up a pint of milk or a loaf of bread? Is that ok?

If it forces you to give up smoking to attend then that’s even better IMO.

I doubt however that positive life choices are behind the PLC’s decision that without explanation comes across as unadulterated greed.
