Political scammers one and all

Peter Lawwell’s comments on Friday that Celtic receive no support from Glasgow City or Scottish Government circles reflects years of plans being frustrated by incoherent rejections.

Were it not for the Commonwealth Games being hosted in the city in 2014, planning permission to redevelop the area to the front of Celtic Park would continue to be rejected. The reality that the Queen would drive past a derelict former school, with vegetation growing from every nook, was sufficient motivation for the Council to allow Celtic to remove the building and landscape the area.  You have Her Mag. to thank for the Celtic Way.

Celtic would like a fanzone. Somewhere you can congregate before a match, where you might even be able to visit a toilet, but the Council doesn’t want it. Planning permission is sought for the hotel. On the face of it, this is a fantastic initiative for a long-deprived area of the city, the Council should be doing their best to encourage Celtic into spending the money, not looking disinterested.

Then we have the proposed no parking zone, which would see it illegal for you to park within one mile of Celtic Park on match days. Parking would start at the one mile limit, but would surely extend a couple of miles beyond this before we are all accommodated. Public transport to and from the area is vastly under served, there simply isn’t the capacity to cope with many football fans. Your choice will be to walk miles to and from the game, or stop going.

The likely change of administration at the Council, from Labour to SNP isn’t necessarily going to help, either. A councillor from the latter camp raised concerns when Celtic asked for permission to build the Superstore, citing that it could damage trade going to local supermarkets.  This is the environment we have to operate in!

The Scottish Government set their faces to stone on the subject of Celtic when Alex Salmond decided to get involved in Scottish football in 2011, leaving us with the ludicrous Offensive Behaviour’ Act.

The Scottish Parliament voted to repeal this act last year, after countless football fans, and Celtic, campaigned on the issue. However, the will of the Scottish Parliament isn’t always respected by the Scottish Government, who ignored the vote, before setting their 2017 agenda on inducing moral outrage when the will of the Scottish Parliament is ignored.

The irony should be disappointing, but it’s not even surprising. Scammers, one and all.

A reminder that this year’s CQN Open Golf takes place at our usual Aberdour venue on Friday 28 July.  Walk with Shay and the Celtic FC Foundation are our primary beneficiaries.  Costs are £80 for the whole day (including golf) and £45 for evening-only guests.  Applications to cqnopen@gmail.com  .

    From STV

    Quote

Five fans have been arrested after the Aberdeen v Rangers game.

A 23-year-old man from Glasgow was charged by police with “sectarian singing” and offences under the Offensive Behaviour at Football Act following the Scottish Premiership match at Pittodrie.

He is expected to appear at Aberdeen Sheriff Court at a later date.

Police also said four men from Aberdeen – aged 20, 26, 27 and 28 – were charged with “minor public disorder offences” after an incident outside the stadium during the tie.

Match commander superintendent George MacDonald confirmed police are also looking into damage to seating and toilets in the away end of Pittodrie, as well as a flare thrown onto the pitch towards the end of the match, which Rangers won 3-0.

He said: “The vast majority of fans followed the advice given and conducted themselves appropriately.

“We are aware of damage to a number of seats in the away support area and the toilet area and enquiries are ongoing along with the club in relation to this.

“A flare was thrown onto the trackside towards the end of the fixture near to the South/Merkland Road stands and we would appeal for anyone who has information in relation to this to contact us or the club as soon as possible.”

I got two parking tickets in the Forge about 3 seasons back. Got about 3 letters for each parking ‘offence’, even though I had shopped in BnQ and Tesco pre match. Haven’t heard anything after ignoring the letters looking for fine money, since then.

It’s a documentray by Mark Daly on abuse of young boys in youth football.

Quite harrowing to see the effect it has had on those who came forward.

50 mins long about 30 to one guy with a number of clubs including Rangers who died a few years ago another unamed still in the game and last 10 to 15 on Corbett’s time at Celtic Boys Club in 70s when he was sacked but research showed the reported version in the View differed then 80s when he came back which I was unaware of.

Celtic’s line seems to be no official connection with the Boys club but I suspect a bit more will be needed in assurance terms.

Not sure what the ultimate objective was other than highlight it happened and need for better safeguards.

A lot to digest, no doubt others will weigh in.

  13. Fantastic Mark Daly documentary just finished on BBC. Get it on IPlayer if you missed it. Total respect to all the guys who found the strength to talk about abuse they suffered at various clubs including ours in their early teens and later. Their careers were ruined and their lives damaged and they are still suffering. We all need to rally round to help them. Congrats to Mary Daly and the BBC for their work.

    Fairhill,

As far as I can remember, the “astounded of forehead” comment was uttered by the chairman of, I think, an Italian club.

The gist of the story is that it was a quote from him after a story appeared in our local rags, about Super Ally being about to sign one of his players.

“astounded, etc.” was his way of expressing surprise at the story.

  16. The grand ole Gerry McNee once wrote in his column…..

My sincere congratulations to you on your good sound common sense approach to the issue of refugees.

People smugglers are criminals. Their trade to Australia has been stopped .

Australia , and every other country , is entitled to decide who shall come to this country. Not people smugglers.

Last week four people in Sweden paid for the stupidity of ” open borders ” with their lives .

    You are easily repelled .

I might be too if I were naive enough to look to the Guardian for information.

Every asylum seeker on Nauru ( Labour party initiative under Kevin Rudd ) has been offered the alternative of returning to their country of origin .

In the vast majority of cases this is Iran.

Many of them may now have the opportunity of going to the U.S.

They have been given a number of alternatives.

The Australian govt. warned several years ago that NO people arriving in Australia by boat would ever be settled in Australia. It was elected and re-elected on this promise.

It is now carrying out that pledge.

1,200 drowned at the hands of people smugglers.

You wish to encourage that criminal trade to continue.

Those drowning , of course , would have taken to the boats with the tacit encouragement of people with your shocking and perhaps naive attitude to promoting their illegal trade.

Now that is what is repulsive.

    Last Post indeed.

For those drowned at sea and for those innocents murdered by ” refugees ” to this marvellous generous country.

  25. Being on the wrong side of the pond, I don’t feel qualified to comment on the ST price increases.

Although my ever more infrequent trips home for a couple of games will exceed the cost of a ST, but I’m usually home on vacations coinciding with home games.

There is a tendency to blame the board, club or generally just Peter.

However, Peter has said that all profits are invested in the team/club. (The lines are forever blurred following the liquidation on PRW)

We constantly want investments in better players, better management teams, better facilities to improve fitness, analyse tactics and preview transfer targets.

Players in particular are the biggest expense and of course we want to develop and attract CL level players.

Obviously these stars arrive here on better salaries and higher associated costs.

Unless we want to follow the PRW model and disappear, we have to pay our way with increased ST revenues.

Celtic should be looking at increased revenue streams, and, as Paul article suggests, our representatives in George Square are thwarting our plans to diversify our traditional revenue streams and placing the burden on the shoulders of Celtic fans.
