Profitable Celtic accounts last year despite revenue dip

1143

Celtic released their financial results for the year to 30 June 2014 this afternoon.  The club remained profitable to the tune of £11.17m (2013: £9.74m) despite a 14$ drop in revenue to £64.74m.  The net cash position at the end of the year was hardly changed from the previous year at £3.83m.

Football and stadium revenue was down £4.4m, which correlates almost exactly to the £100 reduction in season ticket process for around 40,000 seats, but the biggest hit was to Multimedia and Commercial Activities, which were down £5.21m.  The bulk of this fall will be explained by finishing fourth in the Champions League group stage, instead of processing to the knock out stage, as we did in season 2012-13.

Celtic opened a new borrowing facility with the Co-op Bank two weeks ago to replace their existing facilities.  The club have a £6m overdraft (at base plus 1%) and £14.4m of long-term loans.

This high watermark will not be reached this season as revenue will struggle to reach £55m but it’s clear the club can support the current cost structure without needing to pair back.  The project for now is to get revenue back over £70 next season, and for that we’ll need to be better prepared come Champions League qualification time.

  1. Anyway

A lovely morning in G78, and across the Clyde Valley.

No jackets required today when we go to see the Celtic – have a good day all.

  2. Looking forward to a chance to play the new boys and see us up against the 2nd best squad in the SPFL.

I don’t think Ronny’s methods will be much better integrated with all the upheaval due to new arrivals and the international break but I still expect the players to be good enough to beat the Dons at home regardless of these difficulties.

Problems in adjusting to team systems and team tactics do not account for the severe lack of form that this squad has shown at times to date. I don’t expect another Dundee United level performance but one of the St. Johnstone level should be good enough.

  3. Good morning friends from a very dry and very pleasantly bright looking East Kilbride.

Another trip to see The Champions play! Yes!

Hopefully see some of you at CQN Corner but might depend on when I make my escape from the Original Gazebo. Just look for Henrik….. ;-)

  4. Morning Bhoys. Enjoy the game. I am still not well enough to go. Bummer. I am , however, well enough to know that Celtic are unlikely ever to receive such positive reporting from Richard Wilson on the BBC site. This was the end of his match report:

“The visitors can take heart from the growing assurance and aplomb of Macleod, Aird’s ability to be busy and effective on the right flank, the burgeoning partnership between Clark and Boyd, and the high tempo and intent that the team was capable of in Kirkcaldy.”

A world class performance suited to the team at the top of the Best League in the World.

Any comparative data for the 6 SNP MPs at Westminster?

Could Murphy’s “demotion” to the position of Shadow Secretary of State for International Development in 2013 account for the increase?

Or is he one of the many MPs who are still abusing expenses claims?

Lots of questions could be asked and further research undertaken before you leap to your conclusion. Ask yourself, is it likely to be that blatant?

    Saturday 13 September 2014

CELTIC have announced that the club made an £11.2m pre-tax profit last season despite a significant drop in revenue.

The club’s annual accounts showed group revenue decreased by 14.6% to £64.7m, with some of the fall being attributed to a £100 reward to season-ticket holders.

Operating expenses also fell, by 4.5% to just under £60m, to leave Celtic with almost £4m in the bank on June 30. Celtic chairman Ian Bankier described the results as “pleasing” and claimed it left the Scottish champions “in a strong financial position going forward”.

Bankier thanked former manager Neil Lennon for his contribution to the club before he left in the summer to be replaced by Ronny Deila, after guiding Celtic to their third successive title and two successive Champions League campaigns.

The Parkhead chairman also reiterated the message of shrewd husbandry that chief executive Peter Lawwell sent out in the wake of Celtic’s elimination from the Champions League qualifiers last month and in the face of a perceived lack of spending by the board.

Bankier said: “Whilst the short-term objectives of the company are dominated by our day-to-day success as a club on the park, the chief role of the board is to ensure that the long-term future of the club, and the company, is secured.

“Ensuring the long-term security of this club is a process of maximising the potential of the present and managing the risks of the future.

“The board is highly conscious of the financial environment in which we play football here in Scotland.

“The harsh reality is that the total income from broadcasting rights available to the Scottish game is a tiny fraction of what is available to our neighbours in England.

“Within this context and in the face of these hard facts, the board

    has evolved the strategy that

the club, financially, has to adopt a self-sustaining model.

“In plain words, we have to live within our means. We cannot spend money that we don’t have. This is the only way to discharge our fundamental duty to protect the future of this great club.

“Despite all of this, we share the fans’ disappointment over

the failure to qualify for the group stages of the UEFA Champions League this year. Obviously,

we work very hard to employ

the funds we have to allow

    the manager and the team

to produce the best football results they can.

“We do our utmost to acquire the best players we can within our financial constraints and

the manager and the football operation use their best efforts to develop these players along with the talented players produced

    by our Youth Academy.”

  8. BBC left red faced by Ashley’s Sevco scoop

    Date: 12th September 2014 at 7:32 pm

BBC Scotland have been left red faced over their attempt to talk up Mike Ashley’s interest in Sevco.

A story in the Telegraph alleging that Ashley was set to sell Newcastle and pile his fortune into the struggling League One champions got the sports department of the state broadcaster excited as they sensed a cash windfall heading Ibrox way.

Rather than approach Newcastle for a comment on the story BBC Radio Scotland invited the journalist behind the story onto the airwaves to provide more detail on the yarn.

Being freed from the commercial constraints that apply to every other media outlet in the country the BBC could have examined the story to see if it had any substance but instead spent time talking up the prospect of the Sports Direct Arena hosting Champions League football.

It seems that no-one at the state broadcaster knew that branded stadiums are banned by UEFA with the Emirates Stadium and Allianz Arena, among others, re-named for European nights.

The thoughts of Ashley remain a closely guarded secret with Newcastle reacting to the story by banning the Telegraph from St James Park.

Announcing the ban on the newspaper Newcastle stated: “It is not acceptable for newspapers to print factually inaccurate reports that are damaging to the Club and to fail to check facts with Newcastle United ahead of publication and then expect to receive access to the Club.

“Newcastle United will not tolerate this and will take such action as it deems appropriate.

“The ban extends to all reporters working for, or freelancing on behalf of, the Daily Telegraph, as well as Luke Edwards in any capacity he may have working for the paper’s sister title or on a freelance basis.”

Confirming his lack of interest in Sevco Ashley declined to buy up his stake in the share issue aimed at meeting the September payroll.

  11. McGinn would fit in very well back at Celtic, says Brown

    Phil Gordon

    Saturday 13 September 2014

ONE pearl of advice transformed Niall McGinn from a peripheral player into a polished striker.

It came from Craig Brown, who is convinced that the Aberdeen forward has grown into such an accomplished player since leaving Celtic two years ago that even the champions would covet him now.

The 27-year-old returns to Celtic Park – where he scored in both Aberdeen’s SPFL Premiership visits last term – on the back of a successful week for Northern Ireland.

McGinn inspired a comeback for Michael O’Neill’s team in Budapest last Tuesday, by scoring an equaliser against Hungary before setting up Kyle Lafferty’s winner in the 2-1 Euro 2016 qualifying triumph.

Brown was the man who signed McGinn in June 2012 after the then-winger’s contract had expired at Celtic. The former Aberdeen manager – now a director at Pittodrie – played a crucial role in changing McGinn’s psyche in the box, and now club and country are profiting.

“Niall is a different player to the one who left Celtic,” said Brown. “He’s grown in confidence with Aberdeen and Northern Ireland and I think he would fit in very well to the Celtic team now.

“Celtic had Gary Hooper then, so the chances there were limited. He was used mostly as a wide player – but I told Niall that ‘if you want to play as a winger, you’re not coming to Pittodrie. We need you as a striker.'”

The secret of McGinn’s success was a quiet word from Brown in the ear of the shy ‘quiet man’ from County Tyrone. “Niall used to shoot a lot from distance and every one had to be a glory attempt,” explained the former Scotland manager. “I told him to calm down and that ‘the net is your team-mate’. I told him to pass the ball into the net – and he started scoring.

“Niall got his first international goal away to Portugal that year, when Northern Ireland drew 1-1 there, which gave him more confidence. But what I really liked more than his goal, was that he contributed to the team crucially that night by marking Cristiano Ronaldo – that was Ronaldo’s poorest game for Portugal.

“Yet that sums up Niall. If you ask him to do something he’ll do it properly. Niall is a very quiet and modest boy who has no ego.”
