Profitable Celtic accounts last year despite revenue dip

1143

Celtic released their financial results for the year to 30 June 2014 this afternoon.  The club remained profitable to the tune of £11.17m (2013: £9.74m) despite a 14$ drop in revenue to £64.74m.  The net cash position at the end of the year was hardly changed from the previous year at £3.83m.

Football and stadium revenue was down £4.4m, which correlates almost exactly to the £100 reduction in season ticket process for around 40,000 seats, but the biggest hit was to Multimedia and Commercial Activities, which were down £5.21m.  The bulk of this fall will be explained by finishing fourth in the Champions League group stage, instead of processing to the knock out stage, as we did in season 2012-13.

Celtic opened a new borrowing facility with the Co-op Bank two weeks ago to replace their existing facilities.  The club have a £6m overdraft (at base plus 1%) and £14.4m of long-term loans.

This high watermark will not be reached this season as revenue will struggle to reach £55m but it’s clear the club can support the current cost structure without needing to pair back.  The project for now is to get revenue back over £70 next season, and for that we’ll need to be better prepared come Champions League qualification time.

A longshot perhaps but is anyone aware of any Celtic bar in Lido de Jesolo where I might be able to watch the game today?

I’ve had a fine time in Verona and Venice but now to the serious stuff of watching the Bhoys hammer the sheep. Lambs to the slaughter today.

I’ve also spotted Sevco/Newco/Tesco or whatever they call themselves are still in something of a pickle. Lovely.

……’Eamonn McCann, commentator on Irish affairs, takes a dim view of Paisley’s life and works.

“No matter what he did in the last few years of his life to repair the damage that his career has wreaked upon Northern Ireland, the judgement has to be negative,” he says, adding, “He was a source of division, a source of hatred. Dr. Paisley helped to create, and then for years helped to sustain, the political situation and emotional intensity in which the infliction of death was inevitable.”

    God before politics

Mr. McCann, a one-time civil rights activist turned journalist, locates Paisley’s politics firmly in his fundamentalist interpretation of his faith.

“He was motivated by religion rather than politics, even in the political arena,” McCann said. “He made no distinction between Ulster and the cause of the Reformation, therefore to Paisley to give in to [Irish] Nationalism was to go against God — and that was a recipe for political intransigence of a spectacular kind. That is why he rejected every compromise for decades… He provided a religious justification for murder.”…….

  21. DD left as he was not good enough. It would really be a sad day and recognition of our failings to continually improve if suddenly he was considered as a potential signing.

  22. 100% agree BT. 1 good player is better than 3/4 average players.

Was speaking to a work collegue and relative of the young lad Breslin. The boy has been made Scotland captain by Mark Wouters and is rated very highly as he Wouters sees him as being a strong centre half and technically superb with the ball at his feet. The Scotland setup have never questioned his height. At Celtic he is not rated so highly mainly due to his height. He is only 6ft tall after all.

When I hear these stories directly from family members of youth players it worries me that we do not have the right people in charge of our youth setup.

However. I suppose Scotland and Mark Wouters could be wrong.

  24. Mon The Hoops! – “I have been an EU Citizen for over 40 years, are you kicking me out if we vote Yes?”

Pendantic point: you’ve only been a citizen of the EU since 1993.

Main point: nobody really knows what the EU will do if Scotland breaks away from the UK. The EU is ruled by men and not laws and won’t hesitate to act illegally when it suits them.

However, they’ve said Scotland would have to apply to join as a new member state. Some member states, especially Spain, have a vested interest in making the accession of an independent Scotland protracted and painful, so as not to encourage their own breakaway movements. It’s not personal, they just can’t afford to present the Catalans and the Basques with an easy way to leave Spain.

Therefore it’s reasonable to assume that if Scotland votes Yes, the country will spend some time as a non-EU member, perhaps only a couple of years if accelerated negotiations can be agreed. Perhaps longer. That means being outside the single market, so Scottish goods being sold to the EU (and the rest of the UK) are liable to customs duties.

Crucially, England wouldn’t be allowed to permit Scottish imports to freely enter her borders – the EU controls “external” trade agreements. You can imagine the effect this will have on farming, fisheries, whisky, etc.

    From the Scottish Government website:

The total value of exports from Scotland to the rest of UK in 2012 (excluding oil and gas) is estimated at £47.6 billion, of which £25.3 billion was from the services sector and £12.7 billion from the manufacturing sector.

So when Jim Sillars threatened a “Day of Reckoning” against banks and oil companies that employ Scots and invest in Scotland, he wasn’t exaggerating.

Scots would also lose the right to freely travel and work in EU states. For most people that would be more of an annoyance than a serious hindrance, but bad news for Scots who do contract work abroad.

It seems likely the EU would insist Scotland joins the Euro as a necessary condition of EU membership. All new EU members are obliged to adopt the Euro and the EU is unlikely to want to establish a precedent that removes this requirement. So, goodbye pound and hello a currency union that is structurally and cyclically incompatible with the Scottish economy as we know it.

People in Ireland and Greece can tell you how that works out. Thankfully we have Skype these days so it’s not that hard to see your children after they’re forced to emigrate to find jobs.

The Yes campaign says it’s negative to focus on these facts and you should concentrate on the bigger prize – giving the politicians who brought you the Offensive Behaviour at Football Act supreme political power.
