Celtic turned in a mature away European performance this evening as the subjugated Qarabag in the heat of Baku. Chances were at a premium for both teams. Qarabag were reduced to hopeful shots from outside the box, while Celtic took an hour to fire their first real effort, but had the best two chances of the game.
Celtic were nervous looking in the opening 15 minutes, as they struggled to retain possession, allowing Qarabag ample opportunity to build attacks. Midway through the first half Craig Gordon attempted to punch with his left hand but missed and, fortunately, the ball hit his right hand and fell to safety.
29 minutes in Qarabag’s best player, Almeida de Oliveira forced a save from Gordon from outside the box but although the Celtic keeper had to stretch to reach it, it was a save he would have expected to make. A minute from the break Nir Bitton attempted an audacious chip from the halfway line which the keeper backtracked to stop.
10 minutes after the break El Jadeyaoui had the first attempt of the game which was made inside the box but Gordon saved easily. Then Gary Mackay-Steven drove across field before passing to Stuart Armstrong, who took a step inside the box before shooting over the bar.
On 66 minutes Qarabag found a man in space inside the box for the first time but by the time El Jadeyaoui took a touch Dedryck Boyata was on hand to block.
Seven minutes from the end Stefan Johansen made his trademark lung-busting run into the box to assist Armstrong but Stefan was a tad ahead of the pass and ended up shooting wide while stretching back.
James Forrest had the best chance of the game four minutes from time. He ran at the Qarabag defence from 40 yards out, rode one challenge, and found himself clean through with the keeper to beat but instead of shooting from 12 yards he tried to square to Griffiths (who was never going to get the ball) and the chance was missed.

Astana appear to be well into their season where they’ve domestically defeated shakhtar karagandy 4-0 away…
And previous CL tie defeated maribor very comfortably…
I’d like to avoid them
Mike, none taken.
Just wallowing in the glory of European success and six bottles of beer.

When I show my Maryhill Mammy that photo tomorrow, she will want to meet you. She met BMCUW a fortnight ago, and asks after him every day since. The charmer he is. :)
I am a long long time lurker. I’ve not posted cos it requires engagement. But as I visit several times a day I realise I am engaged.
A first post should be measured.
Tonight was good. Italian. No chances given. Lockdown.
In our house we call him Nirlo. A top class midfielder.
Give me Maccabee. A fantastic city to visit.
Living in NL – watch for Victor Jansen.
I am prepared to give weather reports but not on a daily basis.
Thunder showing my age i,m afraid.
At the end of a quite fantastic day may I bid you goodnight with an unashameadly selfish wee lnk to the ole official site –

Potential opponents?
Been having a wee look and its all falling into place for…………
.
Skenderbeu(good name for a beer)Albanian champions and there are images through googling their name of a bloke wielding a sword on top of a white horse so the huns may want us put to that sword ever so slightly more than any of the other lots!
.
Can just see the peppers already :)
Skenderbeu were defeated by crusaders in previous round though they had already put the tie to bed
Cooncil by election in my district tomorrow(YES)…C/L draw Friday…Good times..

Your just a young thing compared to most of us lot!
JCA … glad to hear it!
Son … you aren’t, are you?

Brugge would be in pot 3 if they won but if Monaco also got through Celtic would be in pot 3.
We NEED to get biton on a long term deal before this campaign gets well underway
Mike, any contact with Niagra rims
Delighted to be in next round. Professional performance tonight, thought the defence excelled. Looking at possible opponents I’d prefer the Albanian team or Malmo. Think Belgrade would be a tough gig.. Watched the Astana game earlier and the game was end to en,the pitch looked terrible though. Astroturf I think and not the 4g type so best avoided imo.
This very happy Tim is off to bed now. Can’t overdo the celebrations at my age.
Hail Hail all you Happy Tims.

Give me The Maccabees new album to listen to. Best this year by far. Marks to Prove It.

Now it all becomes clear……brilliant :)
A very, VERY, good (Glasgows….. green n white) evening, to Celtic Supporters world wide.
Great result tonight and a good performance too.
Mature, professional and workmanlike.. let’s look forward to the next round. Well done Ronny an the Bhoys.
Yea, as prev posts stated.. Good production from BT Sport.. not a tax dodging EBT beneficiary bigot in site. Well Done..
God Bless all my fellow Celtic Supporters.. I love you all.
JCA … is that a poster on here, or a CSC club? Either way, I dont think I know him/them. but there are a few Ontario/Canajun tims on here ….
Delaney’s, i’m going to my first away game in 18 years on Sunday.
I got our tickets last week at the Ticket Office. Good prices £25 for me and £5 for my son. We are in the Jackie Husband stand. Thistle have decanted their season ticket holders from there over to the main stand.
Good result and disciplined performance tonight which in very difficult conditions, was very pleasing.
I have a feeling we will get Partizan or Maccabi Tel Aviv in the last qualifier.
If we get Partizan let’s hope our defence isn’t as generous as it was the last time we played them.
Fate might decree we get Maccabi with two of our players having played in the israeli league.
When Henrik left, it was fate we got Barcelona in our group.

Welcome
Hail Hail.

He said he had a ball and was warmly welcomed by yer family,
Nothing less than I expected,
I have honestly yet to meet anyone off CQN at a gathering whom I would not welcome into my home,
See you soon
I have told No1 daughters man its time for action, either take the Wee mhan to see the hoops or let me if he is working, hoping he can make his CQN corner debut next week,
Good night all

Quite correct, sir. Brugge’s co-efficient is 41 to our 39.

I was 4 in 1970. My mum dressed me in the Hoops that day. One of my first memories. Singing Celtic songs with my parents before a European Cup Final in oor hoose in Partick wi oor team on the 64 bus to Auchenshuggle next week too.
If Monaco & Rapid Vienna win play off ties, and we also win, we are in pot 3
I thought I’d seen everything. But up pops this piece of propaganda worthy of Goebbels.

If Izzy picks up a caution (his 3rd caution) in our Play Off first leg, he will miss the second leg. I really hope we sign another LB before Monday night deadline !
Just loaded Opera Coast App (free) to my iPad. It certainly improves the CQN browsing experience. All sorts of problems before.
Albania for will do for me.
A very poor Celtic team fail to score away from home in Europe AGAIN – says the headline in tomorrow’s daily record
Couple of questions,
Does anyone know how the giants of the European arena, Glasgow rangers , got on tonight. I do hope they represented Scotland well, and pushed up the coefficients. Plucky pioneering rowers that they are. Sit down Wilton lest you fall out the boat.
Part 2. I invested some monies on the stock market in “the handsome hun company”, now I can’t find them listed. Anyone give me some advice ?
Evening everyone . Well who feels better after that ? Been out tonight celebrating caoilfhinn’s results so not read back but felt the team performed well and professionally . Ref didnt look like a homer , merely out of his depth .
Interesting stat from this week . 5 out of the 15 seeds (4 from champs route , and Ajax) failed to qualify – to my mind that shows we have done a professional job getting to where we are .
Out of our potential opponents , my order of preference would be
Skënderbeu Korçë , they beat the team that beat Ludogrets and inherited THEIR co-efficient
Malmö FF ,
FK Astana , a lot of travelling , again tho
Partizan Belgrade , maybe it’s their historical reputation
Maccabi Tel-Aviv , useful unit that know their way around Europe
Sanna ( a happy TIM csc)
syzla72 welcome to the mad hoose
Goodnight Timland minding a 9 week old baby followed by watching the match tonight has fair drained me

It will be good to get back to the green green grass of home. Well done the Celts! You can tell just how difficult these games actually are when you see some of the results elsewhere. Looks a fair draw from here on in and we will be in better shape in a few games. Looking forward to the draw on Friday, no preferences and no fears. Let whoever worry about having to play us to get into the Champions League.
Embramike,
Agreed but do you seriously think we’ll spend a penny prior to securing a place in the CL Groups?
Well played Celts, thankyou.
I was proud of everyone of our players tonight. Emilio, Mikael sleep in peace.

Re watching Seville
I just can’t. I’ve tried many times in many different ways – with mates, solo, boozy, not boozy – and I can’t bear it.
It used to be the same with Feyenoord, but I managed to watch that a few years ago. Maybe it just takes me 40 years to get over these things
