Qarabag 0-0 Celtic

541

Celtic turned in a mature away European performance this evening as the subjugated Qarabag in the heat of Baku. Chances were at a premium for both teams. Qarabag were reduced to hopeful shots from outside the box, while Celtic took an hour to fire their first real effort, but had the best two chances of the game.

Celtic were nervous looking in the opening 15 minutes, as they struggled to retain possession, allowing Qarabag ample opportunity to build attacks. Midway through the first half Craig Gordon attempted to punch with his left hand but missed and, fortunately, the ball hit his right hand and fell to safety.

29 minutes in Qarabag’s best player, Almeida de Oliveira forced a save from Gordon from outside the box but although the Celtic keeper had to stretch to reach it, it was a save he would have expected to make. A minute from the break Nir Bitton attempted an audacious chip from the halfway line which the keeper backtracked to stop.

10 minutes after the break El Jadeyaoui had the first attempt of the game which was made inside the box but Gordon saved easily. Then Gary Mackay-Steven drove across field before passing to Stuart Armstrong, who took a step inside the box before shooting over the bar.

On 66 minutes Qarabag found a man in space inside the box for the first time but by the time El Jadeyaoui took a touch Dedryck Boyata was on hand to block.

Seven minutes from the end Stefan Johansen made his trademark lung-busting run into the box to assist Armstrong but Stefan was a tad ahead of the pass and ended up shooting wide while stretching back.

James Forrest had the best chance of the game four minutes from time. He ran at the Qarabag defence from 40 yards out, rode one challenge, and found himself clean through with the keeper to beat but instead of shooting from 12 yards he tried to square to Griffiths (who was never going to get the ball) and the chance was missed.

Our part of the draw is easier on paper in an attempt to prevent the CL becoming entirely a competition for the bigger, more monied leagues.

    .

The co-efficients already create a difficulty in that respect,so it was decided that champions from unseeded leagues would be kept apart from third or fourth teams from bigger leagues.

    .

Hope that goes some way to explaining it!

  5. Hoopy to be looking forward to a play off game. The opposition isn’t big names but there are no mugs at this stage. Every one of these teams will expect to get through so we will need to play at our best and smartest. Two more games for glory. Hai Hail

The MSM are at it with the reporting on this one

BBC described the Huns as football fans …no further clarification

Disgraceful Hun behaviour brushed under the carpet again ….shameful

  8. BBC Scotland news continue the now predictable practice of totally ignoring Scotland,’s champions playing in the champions league. Snyde were at it yesterday. Sad and hilarious at the same time.

    I feel their pain.. Hahaha.

  9. Manure should be facing a harder draw than us, as we’re Champions, they’re no’.

Thanks Ronny and the Bhoys for keeping my post Majorcan holiday high going, as it would have been a hard landing had we gone out.

And thanks again to the poster, sorry, forget who you are,who gave me the gen on Camp De Mar.

If VVD is sold he must be replaced with a quality signing

Boyata and ANother from what we have will be a significant reduction in quality in that area

We did well to replace FF with ( IMO ) a better keeper

We didn’t replace Vic …although Bitton is progressing well

We didn’t replace Hooper …although Griff is improving

Looking forward to the qualifiers …Qarabag are better than what we have to face …CL beckons

Big up for Izzy ….brilliant …some clowns on here wanted a one game novice to be selected before him too….back to your best wee man

    Very good European away performance

Virgil is a class act, never under and pressure and could have won the match

    Happy clapper last night

  12. Good morning friends.

Although East Kilbride is again under a deluge of heavy rain this morning it hasn’t dampened my spirits one iota (what is an iota?). Roll on for Friday’s draw and then the excitement of this season’s first Glasgow derby. Happy days!

  13. Good result for the Celts….some say that it was a horrible game to watch….at ‘this’ stage…how it looks disny matter…I hope that RD / JC / JK….are turning into – cynical-shrewdies – they have to be that way…I hope that the penny has dropped that….Celtic FC in it’s present place in world football, must preach from all levels of management structures ‘within’ the club that…when Celtic FC take to the pitch in Europe that it must be installed into ‘all’ players heads at the club that…..’we’…..are the wee guys with a point to prove…even though, we may have a bigger stadium / turnover / fanbase than a lot of teams that we face…’we’…are the underdogs who ‘must’ prove that we deserve to be taking up the opportunity to compete at European levels….the underdog-factor has driven-on some of our more legendary teams in our history…we cant lose that part of our make-up…imho

    +++

Good luck to the Celts….oot. YNWA.

  14. My friends in Celtic,

Now looking forward to Friday’s draw.

No matter who we draw we should not even consider Live TV until we have passé the benchmark of 50k tickets sold.

Qurabag were not a particularly good team but with a full and hostile crowd behind them it was an extremely challenging game.

Our priority must be to make Parkhead as intimidating as possible, and that means using every means to sell tickets.

Yes I feel sorry for those who genuinely cannot make it, but we must “persuade” those can go but chose not to, to make the effort of leaving their settee or local.

Far too much emphasis on here to view games without going to the match.

Remember” Football without fans is nothing”

    HH.

  15. Morning all thanks for the welcome, looking at the possible teams in the draw none will relish a hopefully packed CP with 3 league games under our belt we,ll fitter and up to speed. bring on the draw Hail Hail.

  16. The hand of God on

Very entertaining in my place of work today …the fans of West Of Scotland FC cannot stand the fact that we are guaranteed European football upto Christmas time (hopefully Champions league but unlike them we take nothing for granted). They really are hurtin’ beyond belief.

    Paddy bhoy

Good on Matthew saving the penalty and winning the match

I remember playing in goal for the work and we lost a penalty shoot out after 1 saved the 1st kick

We missed 2 and as usual it was my fault because I only saved the 1

    Keeper can never win. :-)

  18. Question here?

Would I be right in thinking if we win through to the groups sections of the C L we would be playing Sat, or Sun. Games domestic through until Christmas.

But! If we lose, we are guaranteed to play all our games every Sundy?

  19. Good morning CQNers,

Last night’s performance was probably one of the most solid team performances I’ve seen for some time, Ronny Deila showed he has more than one set of tactics and Emilio Izaguirre benefited from being allowed to concentrate on his defensive responsibilities.

    Well done Izzy.

  20. My friends in Celtic,

One of the most reoccurring questions posed on here during games at paradise is ” what is the attendance”

Let the fans and the club do all in their power to ensure that it is as busy as it can possibly be.

Ticket prices, pre match entertainment and an over-hall of the catering can all do their part.

Hopefully the “summer” weather can play its part, but most importantly, block all live outlets.

Champions league games played a Tues or We’d night, so Scottish premier league games should be predominately on Saturday

Europa league games played a Thurs night, so league games after such generally a Sunday

    Hope that helps

Listening to Chris Sutton commentary last night was strange .

  25. Morning Timland from a very warm hun free mountain valley.

These pre qualifiers are a good thing imo, can you imagine us going into a play off without these games.

Extra revenue for Pedro, what’s no to like :-)

These players are pros, a couple of weeks off shouldn’t affect them anyways.

  26. Choob strike today so the big smoke is actually strangely quieter with all the suits “working from home”. If it was like this all the time I would maybe stay. Mon the strikers.

Speaking of strikers, willing to give Ciftci time to settle but needs to sharpen up a bit.

Last night was tense but when you think about it Qarabag were pretty toothless last night and I think congrats need to go to RD for the tactics.

  27. PFayr.

After watching the game last night I’m completely exhausted, never felt like that before watching a game on telly, I never watched a game before that exhausted me so much, I’m still knackered when I got up this morning.

I’m going to Musselburgh with Richie tomorrow, I hope watching his horse run doesn’t knacker me as much as the football did last night. Well done the team, all played their part in getting us into the next round, also the management team,

If Celtic had any sense they’d offer VVD a big pay rise and an extension to his contract get him to stay with us for a bit longer at Celtic. Maybe that would stop these stupid offers coming in of £7.000.000,he’s worth three times that at least.

  28. Thomthetim: As far as I know, BT Europe is available through the Sky box but not UPC! I had the same problem as Hankray. It should be sorted for the next round.

Anyhow, off to the gym proudly wearing the Hoops.

  29. Watched last night and was very nervous during game .

Agree that we must maximise the crowd for next round. If we get through then every group game will be a sellout, so why did not those who will attend then, attend for the more important playoff??!!

All the talk of strikers, I don’t think Hooper would score as many playing in Ronny’s system.

Just watched BBC news there and no mention of the game in the local news section, though it was on the national part. Will be checking if Aberdeen gets a mention tomorrow as I’m anticipating they consider last nights game as old news.

  31. BBC SCOTLAND tv news….highlighting Aberdeen game tonight…not a mention of Celtic game…unreal Huns

  32. Deadline on Monday for new players for next round

We still need a striker asap, ciftci should only be squad player for me.. Far better back up than balde, pukki.
