Qarabag 0-0 Celtic

541

Celtic turned in a mature away European performance this evening as the subjugated Qarabag in the heat of Baku. Chances were at a premium for both teams. Qarabag were reduced to hopeful shots from outside the box, while Celtic took an hour to fire their first real effort, but had the best two chances of the game.

Celtic were nervous looking in the opening 15 minutes, as they struggled to retain possession, allowing Qarabag ample opportunity to build attacks. Midway through the first half Craig Gordon attempted to punch with his left hand but missed and, fortunately, the ball hit his right hand and fell to safety.

29 minutes in Qarabag’s best player, Almeida de Oliveira forced a save from Gordon from outside the box but although the Celtic keeper had to stretch to reach it, it was a save he would have expected to make. A minute from the break Nir Bitton attempted an audacious chip from the halfway line which the keeper backtracked to stop.

10 minutes after the break El Jadeyaoui had the first attempt of the game which was made inside the box but Gordon saved easily. Then Gary Mackay-Steven drove across field before passing to Stuart Armstrong, who took a step inside the box before shooting over the bar.

On 66 minutes Qarabag found a man in space inside the box for the first time but by the time El Jadeyaoui took a touch Dedryck Boyata was on hand to block.

Seven minutes from the end Stefan Johansen made his trademark lung-busting run into the box to assist Armstrong but Stefan was a tad ahead of the pass and ended up shooting wide while stretching back.

James Forrest had the best chance of the game four minutes from time. He ran at the Qarabag defence from 40 yards out, rode one challenge, and found himself clean through with the keeper to beat but instead of shooting from 12 yards he tried to square to Griffiths (who was never going to get the ball) and the chance was missed.

  1. Unfortunately had to listen to the game on Radio Scotland last night….torture!

Sounded like a different game to the one most of you watched.

Can’t abide Liam McLeod when he commentates on our games…so negative, always bigging up the opposition.

Anyway, good to hear it was a much more composed and professional performance than it sounded.

Ronnie sounding upbeat about the next round. Hope his optimism is proven correct.

On the way for the annual ‘Coffin Dodgers’ game against Irvine Golf Club. I shall be resplendent in various shades of green,not40, as per normal in this game.c.TD GIRUY. As regards games,if you can afford it and do not have family issues you should always be at the Celtic game but that is just me.

Why do I get passed on to games and bookies when logging on

  4. Solid perfomance last night on a pitch that resembled the patch of land the coaches parked on outside the stadium in Seville.

Saw the first bonkers rumour of the day in Hernandez from Man Utd on loan. Not for me I don;t rate the boy.

Let me start the 2nd one. I believe Liverpool want someone to pick up £40k a week for Balotelli. Take him on loan and give it to him. Put in a clause that if it doesn;t work he goes back in January. Get the boy in show him some support and get him scoring. He is a £20m player who has lost his way. I would take a punt on him.

£40k a week is around £2m for the period he would likely be at Paradise for the season.

Well worth the gamble I reckon.

Booker t -you should have heard it before the game lauding macinnes as the next mourinho!

Right enough it was wee chick dung who was doing the cheerleading hh

Generally a controlled performance but it wasn’t a great performance. GMS and JF continue to disappoint. They weren’t a good side. They made numerous suicide passes, have a guff goalie and couldn’t score in a house of ill repute.

Fantastic opportunity to progress and develop with Ronny if he is supported. Unfortunately I fear that our latest striker will not score many for us. Placing so much hope in Tierney is also unwise.

    Looking forward to the draw.

Just watched the game again -CANTER

Broonie was great in the 2nd half with his high pressing.

Their wee nyaffy number 2s ears will still be ringing after the roar broonie gave him.

Discipline from the whole team, Nir gets a wee special mention though,we really need to get him tied down long term.

Wee complimentary Email sent to BT on their coverage last night ,

I can just picture the weasel McCann when Craig Gordon made the brilliant save still going on about how he should have seen red on sat if Sky were covering game.

He’s not worth unsettling the squad harmony .. He’s a loose cannon and vastly overrated ..

We need a natural goal scorer .. something John Park seems incapable of finding.

Very well done to all the players for a disciplined performance last night. We could have played for another 90 minutes and Qarabag still would not have scored.

Keep Balotelli non trying rocket and bad influence.

A big Haun to the honduran for last night.

Take any of the teams left in our section then its bring on the spaniards by the score.

  12. Captain Beefheart, They have had a series of very good European results. They do not have a cutting edge but they can pass the ball, they are well organised at the back and very difficult to break down. They had a fanatical crowd in a sweltering stadium with a dodgy pitch and a dodgy Ref.

In these circumstances it was a bloody good performance by our Bhoys, very difficult pitch for the likes of GMS, P.S. Forrest didn’t disappoint me, excellent run to set up chance.

Don’t think people are placing too much hope in Tierney, he had a good debut, hope he plays against Partick. Problem is with Celtic every game is a must win, very difficult for young lads to get the run of games they need to establish themselves.

I also watched the game again this morning and you are correct about their number 2. He even pushed/slapped the ref (on his stomach) without further action.

However, they had another two wee nyaffs, numbers 10 and 67. Both these wee shoites spent two games trying to wind up Broonie and , also, referee the games. They took turns about trying to tell the ref what to do. Wee horribles…hun candidates.

    GIRU them all!

  14. Mission accomplished. That’s all thT matters. Will our Board strengthen for next round? If not then they are very hard of learning.

Ciftci looked like a poor man’s Samaras to me. I’d rather we had big Sammi up front.

Great that we still have European big time in our sights…

  15. Ballotelli is a rocket but he has top level ability. He’d be good for a year. Griffiths needs challenged to ensure he keeps proving. I have a lot of faith in Griffiths I’d nurture his talent and bringing in s big name striker would assist in that process.

  16. European football right through till Christmas, and not one Hun on our screen to look at or listen to, I wonder if that will ever catch on,.

Yes I heard wee Chick….had to laugh but I don’t take anything he says seriously. How he has managed to hold down a job for all these years is beyond me….well maybe I could hazard a guess.

A good defensive attitude last night….thought big mik lustig was solid.

But….lets not get carried away…..carrierbag weren’t much of a team.

Ciftci….ive said it before…..not my type of player.

We need someone who can score goals…..seeing as Ronny wont play the only guy we have who is scoring, LG, I just don’t get that one.

Another project punt on Ciftci…..looks like a PL production to me……something for nothing,….it wont work.

Anyway…..imo, we need to improve, and quickly.

  20. Calton Tongue @10:07 thank you for your explanation of the draw tomorrow, fully understand now. Conglatulatory email sent to BT, would encourage everyone to do likewise. Hail Hail Hebcelt

  21. It may be a current bun free BT but it sure ain’t a current bun free Sky Sports. I have just watched Andy Walker on SSN being prompted to agree that despite winning the tie, Celtic were far from convincing last night.

    .

To be fair to him, he disagreed with that point but did go on to say that even if Celtic get into the Champions League, it won’t be a big enough incentive to keep VVD at Celtic and he fully expects him to be playing in England by the end of the transfer window.

    .

Whooping with delight he then told us all how good The The are going to be this season under the fantastically wonderful Mark Warburton.

  22. Getting some excellent service from the Ticket Office over today and yesterday regarding a ST for one of the kids. Needs said as they generally just get stick.

Qarabag are an efficient outfit, tough to beat. They will cause a few surprises this EL campaign,I reckon.

    .

We can only beat who’s in front of us,and we did it in a playing style totally different from this time last season. I doubt many of us are getting carried away, but some of us are heartened by the learning curve we are on.

    .

Let’s hope we continue to learn and improve. The CL might not need Celtic, but Celtic should be in there showing ourselves to be worthy of competing.

    .

As the competition all the top players want to play in,being there entitles us to be included amongst the top teams. Hopefully our performances will be better than two seasons ago, mind.

TGM: Did you watch the football earlier?

GUY: I’m a Rangers fan….but I done THEM on my coupon

TGM: Rangers….Rangers were liquidated, they are deid

    GUY: Aw FFS

TGM: Are youze still on your three-year plan for European domination?

    GUY: We will be back

TGM: EH, naw ye wont…..no until you have three years of unblemished accounts to show

TGM: An anyway, you are hated throughout Europe, nobody can be bothered with you

    GUY: Aye ok….see you later

Some fair points Cork but they weren’t great passers. The hostile crowd? Boy George would be more intimidating. Incidentally, were the crowd segregated by gender? They did have a banner calling us slaves of England but it wasn’t the worst of atmospheres.

Despite some mischief makers saying otherwise last night, I have been fully supportive towards Ronny. Unlike others. Happy for all concerned at Celtic Park, especially Ronny.

    Bet we get bloody Partizan.

Cant remember the last time we ground out an away draw in Europe, so, I’m heartened by that, but I do feel we need to improve.

We need someone who can score in Europe,…..and id prefer LG to Ciftci, but what do I know.

Hopefully we get a good draw tomorrow.

MAIN PROBLEM WITH ciftci is his domestic ban. IMO,he needs a run of games, some goals to bolster his confidence. That can’t happen at the moment.

    .

That said,I’d prefer Griffiths up front anyway!
