Rangers 3-2 Celtic

1137

Celtic will have to keep the Champagne on ice for a while longer after failing to collect the three points required to win the league at Ibrox this afternoon.  The champions-elect looked nervous early on with few looking comfortable in possession, allowing Rangers significant periods of possession.  After only 10 minutes Rangers were ahead when Sone Aluko beat Thomas Rogne before cutting inside Charlie Mulgrew and firing a shot past Forster in the Celtic goal.

Celtic scarcely featured as an attacking threat in the first half but moments after going behind Georgios Samaras produced one of the most scintillating pieces of skill on the day.  The Greek international collected the ball 70 yards from goal, beat four opponents before his shot from 12 yards was saved by Alan McGregor.  Anthony Stokes mishit the rebound allowing McGregor to tip over.

Stokes forced a further save from McGregor with a fine volley after controlling on his chest but the game was soon to look ominous for Celtic.  Cha Du-Ri was caught wrong side of Lee Wallace and made the slighted touch on the Rangers player who went to ground two yards outside the penalty area.  Referee Calum Murray sent Cha off despite the covering attendance of Charlie Mulgrew.

Despite their numerical advantage Rangers seemed content to prevent Celtic scoring, Fraster Forster didn’t make a single save while Celtic were numerically on level terms or only a single man down.  Ten minutes after the break Victor Wanyama was red carded for a two footed tackle on Steven Whittaker.

Lee McCulloch was fortunate to remain on the field after elbowing Scott Brown on the head.  In a carbon copy of the incident which ended Beram Kayal’s season in December, McCulloch went to ground after the incident until attended by a physio, which perhaps tempered the referee’s response.  Clever, if predictable.

With things clearly not going their way Celtic then lost an offside goal.  Celtic had an opportunity to make an attempt on goal when they won a free kick 28 yards out.  With Charlie Mulgrew still running into position Scott Brown played a quick pass to Kris Commons but Celtic players were crowded out by a number of opponents and lost possession.  Rangers broke forward and applied pressure which brought the best out of Fraser Forster but Andrew Little put Rangers two ahead from what was clearly an offside position.

A further breakaway on the 77th minute resulted in Lee Wallace putting Rangers three goals ahead.

Despite being two goals down substitute Kris Commons started to dictate play and brought Celtic their best period of possession.  In the 89th minute Georgios Samaras broke through the Rangers defence but was scythed to the ground by Bocanegra.  The referee awarded a penalty and ordered the Rangers player off.  Scott Brown scored the penalty

Moments later Commons got the better of Whittaker on Celtic’s left before being brought down by the Rangers player.  Commons found Thomas Rogne with the resultant free kick which the defender powered home.

Any links to pictures of any wind-ups today – banners etc – anything about the bankrupt cheats?

Could do with a bit of cheering up.

  2. did McCall not state yesterday after their 2-0 loss that the team were “aiming” for 3rd place?

no party next week, will be at that cesspit in Ayrshire the week after and more money given to that stinking club

  3. Nuclear Bovril and a Half Munched Pie on

Oh well, at least our A and E units will be less busy tonight.

And on another positive note Young Rhys McCabe (his first name is Young isn’t it?) will obviously be made Scotland captain next week. And if Shonny Aluko has a Scottish granny then Scotland should win the World Cup easily. Pat Nevin knows everything. And Calum Murray is sure to be reffing several major international finals after that display of stouthearted fairness.

Do we not win the league next week?

I think we need Rangers to drop points against M’well for us to guarantee winning the League with a victory against St J.

  5. I can’t wait until the game next Sunday, a full house that will be rocking, especially if the title can be secured on the day.

Let the huns battle it out with Motherwell for 2nd place (excitement indeed) and I don’t think Motherwell will get beat next week.

  6. I said that red for Wanyama was probably right decision. I watched that tackle once again and I’m not sure if this was foul at all.

  7. Even if we go along with Jim Duffy saying the ref played to the letter of the law then where was it when Whitaker jumped all over Ledley in the box and sent him to the ground….. I expect the same as

  8. Westim, you have made your position clear,

You believe Calum Murray’s version of events, I believe Neil Lennons.

The truth will out as it did with Dougie Dougie.

    Nice chattin.

“P.S. rangers at fir park are the biggest certainty on next weeks coupon. ”

Aye but I heard all last week that Motherwell were certain to win at Rugby Park this weekend.

It won’t bother me. If we beat St. Johnstone we can celebrate a title win, and a lucky few get to celebrate it being rubber stamped at Kilmarnock

The relief on all media outlets that rangers had won was palpable.

Not only from the usual suspects, but across the board.

They were obviously anticipating the same violent backlash as the rest of us if rangers lost. What an indictment of that team.

Proud to be a bear indeed.

For all those Celtic supporters who accept today’s defeat because Celtic have already won the league is the timidity huns prey on. Its an acceptance of their cheating and ascendancy.

Ok so Celtic lost 3-2 w/9 men. I posted this at half time…

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Celtic completely outplayed first 10 mins.

Rogne, Cha and Stokes are not Celtic Class.

Jury still out on a few others.

SFA MIBS HUNS POALICE have predetermined the result.

Cha red because ref realized he couldn’t give a penalty.

Samaras twice been physically removed from the ball that if in reverse would have been yellows.

No Celtic triumph at the home of hunnery today.

    Legendary otherwise.

@celticrumours you can’t put a price on the Gers team spirit. If you could, they’d have sold it already.

  14. It’s not just the refereeing decisions.

    It’s the whole SPL/SFA/Media package.

It’s rotten and biased to the core.

  15. Today was not a surprise, but Murray has a a lot to learn about not making the agenda so blatantly obvious.

Cha’s red was a scandal – it was barely a foul and was never a clear goal-scoring opportunity anyway. As soon as that happened I knew we wouldn’t win.

Victor was stupid – with the ref in that kind of mood a tackle like that is always liable to be punished. But compare to Healy’s on Forrest in December, and Lafferty’s on Hinkel, neither of which merited a red according to the MIB…

As for sending Neil to the media room? I hope we don’t let this lie. I would be really interested in knowing exactly what went on. Celtic’s position vis a vis the SFA is as strong as it will ever be – if Neil has been stitched up I want us to do something about it.

As for Sky – the whole agenda was pro-Rangers and pro-“Old Firm”. This was undoubtedly the best result for them and boy did their delight show. I spoke to someone last week who works with Sky’s Scottish operation on a regular basis – the party line is clearly being put about that the broadcaster wants the Huns to remain in the SPL. Whether this comes from embittered Huns like Tanner, or from someone important higher up the food chain, I’m not sure.

As for the Huns – that’s their season. No doubt we’ll be treated to lots of guff about how impressed the Singaporeans/Americans/Martians were, and how it has “made them even more determined” to buy the Rotting Carcass of Govan…

My advice: ignore it. RFC is holed below the water line, and today represents the last escape of putrid air before she plummets to the briny deep.

  16. I swear I twice saw Elbows McC roll around as if in last rite attention the nearest Priest, but Lazarus quick in the rising to add hun numbers to a nine man Celtic

I didn’t think so at all.

He played the ball with his first foot. Nowhere else for his other leg to go, and even then, it was nowhere near Whittaker.

Back to the real show. Lets be honest the football is a sideshow.

Rangerstaxcase guy saying more juicy headlines this week relating to Murray and the former directors.

Liquidation will not happen until at least mid April

huns wont have accounts in by 31 Mar so no UEFA or SPL football next season for sure. That should tell any dumb ass hun that their club is deed.

I expect to see a lot of activity with regards the fit and proper person test for Craig Whyte. The SPL inquiry. The monies with regards collyer and bristow. Neil Lennon disciplinary proceedings and the SFA inquiry and Campbell Ogilvie

Not sure if I can recover from the irony of being called dim by someone who clearly finds punctuation and spelling too tiresome to bother with and prefers to use “fur” and “ah” instead of “for” and “I” but let me try.

How does me interpreting certain things from today’s game differently to you raise any questions about me being bright or not? It’s all a matter of opinion. For all I know you could be a semi-functioning vegetable, but that doesn’t mean you have a ‘bad’ opinion on all things celtic, you just have a different one.

Enjoy the bbq, i’ll be enjoying mine too

Depends which way you look at it tho eh…?

Shittaker clearly goes over the ball. I would have booked both and had a word.

    Wee Callum had other instructions….

Jeez He even hesitated sending Bocanegra off with minutes on the clock…!

No two ways about it….They done all they could to delay the pain….Sadly they didn’t have to try too hard.

Fair comment re when we win.

My view was entirely McCall based! As a student of form I can see no other outcome. Reverting to type is the phrase running through my head.

Your Petulant jibe struck a nerve. Been stuck at home all week with a sprained ankle- was really looking forward to getting back to work with League won talking.

  24. Aparently Uncle Fester led the entire rag tag gang to the centre circle after full time to give a big thank you to all the fans for their great support!!!

Could it be a farewell wave before they feck off? Anyway what a support, 90 minutes of bile and hatred, then thye cannot gaurantee our managers safety in their directors box, what a sad tale to tell.

Seems there are far too many things going on now for them to media manage it all by wrapping it up in a nice wee Masonic package.

    They’ve lost control.

    End game.

  26. Shouldn’t that cesspit be closed down NOW if the management couldn’t guarantee the safety of our manager? Is it too obvious a condition for its operation as a live venue that there isn’t such a rule or regulation?

  27. I wasn’t going to mention it

but i think we all need cheering up.

  28. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

    Tin hat on.

Our attitude today was wrong. Some of our players are frightened of Ibrox.

We had a chance to win the biggest prize in Scottish football today against a team who today are earning a quarter of what they earned a month ago. We blew it.

We were not fired up. We allowed prior warnings about behaviour and conduct to suppress our fire and determination. They wanted it more than us and that is unacceptable.

Cha’s sending off was very harsh but came about partly because he was slightly behind Lee Wallace. Cha Du Ri is a significantly faster runner than Wallace so how did the other guy get ahead of him?

Simple – he wanted it more.

I accept all the comments about Calum Murray. He played his part well. However I have to say (tin hat adjusted) I have seen many worse performances by refs in matches against them than that one today.

First and foremost we need to look at ourselves. In terms of where both teams currently are – we should p155 all over that opposition and today we didn’t.

  30. Only in Scotland can a manager be sent to the stands and yet not be allowed in the stands due to fears for his safety.
