Reacting to adversity

1334

I like Scott Brown and Leigh Griffiths’ reactions to our recent adversity.  It says a lot about them.  They both personalise responsibility for what happens next, this is an important part of recovery – and success.

A week ago I wrote that the League Cup semi against Ross County was the biggest game in the rest of our season, and that it wasn’t a game I’d bet on.  It provided the toxicity cup football can generate, creating a crisis mentality which rolled into Aberdeen on Wednesday.

This psychological phenomenon has to end now.  Feel free to put a date in June in the diary to get back to it.  We are in a genuine league title contest, something you and I talked about as a great thing for Scottish football not so long ago.  We have no God given right to be miles ahead of anyone.  We are here because we’ve made mistakes and an opponent stepped up.  Welcome to Celtic.

If you want to open an inquest when the patient catches a cold, knock yourself out, but I’m not up for it.  If we want this title, we circle the wagons and give the manager and players the encouragement they need to get the job done (and, erm, that includes you, ‘Phyllis’).  You can be sure Aberdeen fans will do nothing less.

Tomorrow the focus switches to Perth, where Aberdeen take on St Johnstone.  They won their first 8 league games this season, but the wheels came off the tractor immediately after their most important victory away from home – at Tynecastle.  Next up was a League Cup game against Hibs, the loss of which plunged them into a five-week chasm.

They are a team who get notoriously nervous just when they begin to think they are in with a chance.  We’ll see what Tommy Wright does with them tomorrow.

Enjoy your football.  Enjoy this league race, the challenge and the disappointments.  Enjoy that thrill when a goal goes against Aberdeen, or the downer when they score.  It will make the finale all the more rewarding, I promise you.

Just caught the studio line up on sky. Tanner, ebt Smith and ebt McCann. It doesn’t get any worse.

Tanner btw is the most blatant anti Celtic front man on tv since Peter Thomson.

  2. Hebcelt, if McGregor spent a night in the cells he’s either failed a breath test or refused to give one. Either way, he’s got a problem and in this case I very much doubt there’s smoke without fire because the cops will not have ut him in a cell overnight without reason (remember, this is a criminal offence we’re talking about, and a hgh-profile person). If he’s been drinking and driving he’s an idiot. ‘We’ve all done it’ does not excuse it one iota. It’s not as though the lad can’t afford a taxi.

And leaving the possible criminality and irresponsibility to one side, what about the reflection on his employer?

    Very, very disappointing.

Shortbread need to pander to their audience hence the laughable broadcast of what they are watching on Telly.

Going by the amount of Celtic fans who watch Rangers, no wonder the radio made a commercial decision to have the game on.

    Old Firmism hasn’t died.

Completely agree though if he’s been charged surely he must have provided a positive sample?

We were talking about that last night. My mate stated he could not believe the amount of Celtic supporters watching Sevco.

Especially today when there is a high profile game from a top league.

  11. Wow! Ranieri’s Leicester go 6 clear at top of the EPL after dumping Citeh.

Imagine if they’d hired a manager who’d won a title somewhere, anywhere!

They’d probably have it wrapped up by now.

  12. Greenpinata on 6th February 2016 2:38 pm Leicester win 3-1 full time.

Who are Aberdeen playing in the cup today?

    Oh they’re not in it!

Knocked out by a team with less resources, what for the fifth time in a row?

No wonder the MSM is screaming for McInnes to be sacked.

    Oh, hang on……..

  16. Tontine Tim.

Agree re Joe Hart. But to be fair he kept a clean head of hair.

I take it you’re happy now that Celtic are in the ‘ballerina’ position in the league?

  18. glendalystonsils on

To be honest, I was flicking between the Man city game and the huns game.

Only because I was hoping for a Killie win. You see, my dislike of the Ayrshire huns, great though it is, ain’t nothing compared to my dislike of their Govan overlords.

  19. Watched the Leicester game and again it reaffirmed my belief that the possession obsessed coaches are being found out.

Man city again had 66% of meaningless possession.

Leicester kept it simple and despite being outshot by quite away they had 7 shots on target to Cities 4.

Their coach keeps it simple and plays players to their strengths.

The ball is moved quickly to the areas that count. Albrichton who has his limitations was very effective by playing the ball direct and early to dangerous areas and Vardy and Mahrez constantly made runs in anticipation.

Down with the ineffective possession obsessed coaches!

I am always happy (apart fae a Monday morning) not sure about this ballerina position you type of

  21. Fieldofdrams what has he been found guilty of -nada- if and when he is throw the book at him. lets dispense with innocent until proved guilty, if the polis Scotland arrest and charge you, then you are automatically guilty?? Try telling that to our many fans who have been found not guilty/not proven or case dimissed. I repeat if he charged and found guilty – no sympathy, until then lets wait and see what transpires. Don’t you remember hoping for an Aberdeen victory against Dundee a couple of weeks ago, so that Celtic would be ‘on their toes’ for the remainder of the season?

Hope that 3 points doesn’t turn out to be crucial, Gerry!

Be careful what you wish for, eh?

  24. So, after scraping two lucky 1-0 wins against teams who operate on a totally different reality to themselves, they then slump to an uninspiring 0-0 home draw against yet another team with vastly inferior resources, leaving themselves with a fraught replay to face away from home. I presume the meeja are clamouring for the removal of their manager at every turn (of the page)?…

But does Lee McCulloch really have it in himself to eliminate them from the Scottish Cup? Only time will tell.

Aberdeen. You’ve got balls. Particularly if you build on that early lead.
