RECRUITMENT CHIEF MARK LAWWELL QUITS

MARK LAWWELL has quit as Celtic’s Head of First Team Scouting and Recruitment.

Joe Dudgeon has also resigned from his position as Lead First Team Scout and both talent spotters are leaving the champions to pursue fresh challenges.

Boss Brendan Rodgers, speaking to the club website, said: “As part of the Club’s recruitment team, Mark and Joe have worked tirelessly to bring success to Celtic and I would like to wish them both the very best for the future.”

Chief Executive Michael Nicholson added: “Everyone at Celtic thanks Mark and Joe for their contribution and dedication to the club, and we wish them both every success moving forward.”

Mark, son of chairman Peter, was brought in by former gaffer Ange Postecoglou in May 2022 from his position as Head of CFG Scouting and Recruitment, within City Football Group’s global structure.

Joe joined from City Football Group in November 2022.

ON THE ALERT…Alistair Johnston was a £3.5milion recruit in January 2023.

In Lawwell’s time at Parkhead, he was behind moves for Alistair Johnston, Odin Holm, Maik Nawrocki and Gustaf Laferbielke among others.

In his time with Manchester City, he pointed the likes of Patrick Roberts, Dedryck Boyata, John Guidetti, Jason Denayer and Daniel Arzani from The Etihad to the east end of Glasgow.

He was also instrumental in Jeremie Frimpong coming to Parkhead for £1million in September 2019 and the Dutch right-back was then sold to Bayer Leverkusen for more than ten times that amount in January 2021.

There has been criticism of the calibre of Hoops signings in the past two windows which culminated in only two recruits last month.

German winger Nicolas Kuhn arrived in a £3million deal from Rapid Vienna and Republic of Ireland international striker Adam Idah, who has already scored five goals, joined on a short-term loan contract from Championship side Norwich City on deadline day.
