Referee Mallenco scouted ahead of Celtic game

1081

The Guardian did an excellent piece on Wednesday on how referees in various European territories would view the penalty box wrestling of the Juventus players.  In short, there is a variance in how these offences are punished.  Who knew?

Juventus knew.  I hear they watched four videos of referee Alberto Undiano Mallenco ahead of the Celtic game.

You have to admire their thoroughness.  They had a plan to combat Celtic and needed to know if the referee would let them away with it.  Gone are the days when someone at Juve would simply pick up the phone and ‘ask’.  The danger from Celtic was known, illegal holding would nullify this danger and watching a few videos established what players would get away with.

It’s no longer sufficient to scout your opponents, if you want an edge in this game, scout the referee too.

Every day’s a school day.

I hear from a good contact that a journalist who recently departed the media for a job in the lower leagues once wanted to be a bit of a Jungle Jim. Apparently he was keen to ditch his industry for a job at Celtic back in the 90s. What an escape!

On Friday 1 March the Lisbon Lions will be at the Kerrydale Suite providing commentary and answering questions on their magnificent European Cup final win in 1967. This has never happened in 46 years since that game, to say it is a unique opportunity fails to tell the whole story.

The event is part of our 125 4 125 campaign – central to reinvigorating the charitable spirit which is part of the club we love. It will be a family occasions, tickets are available at £10 for adults and £5 for children. The night has been organised by several fans working in conjunction with the people at Celtic Charity, so please do your best to support this great occasion. Individual tickets or tables are available, details here.

    Ah, the accounts.

They don’t need to lodge accounts till the end of 2014, now if they do infact wait that long, assuming they are still around, they need to wait until they have 3 years audited accounts to get into europe, so by my reckoning, if they don’t submit any till the end of 2014, they can’t play in europe till season 2017/2018 at the earliest, could even be the next season, depends on how uefa look at things, ie, when the season starts.

Sevco under Ally McCoist will struggle to get three back to back promotions and getting out of the first division will prove a steakbake to far for our rotund balding hero..

  13. i am 36 years old, watched us getting beaten on a regular basis as rangers done their 9ers, it was murder and for the most part we were sh&te.

since wee fergus took over we have had our ups and downs but all in all we have done fairly well. in addition to leagues and domestic cups we have reached a uefa cup final, a uefa cup sami-final and have reach the last 16 of the c/l 3 times.

this season once again we reached the c/l last 16, are top of the league, have reduced our debt to zero (season ends income) and have, what i consider to be our best team in about 8 years yet people are complaining.

in addition to the above,we have a good academy bringing through players, a good scouting network bringing in young players and a manager willing to give bhoys a chance.

the only negative is that players preforming well will attract attention and we will lose them to clubs able to pay more than us, thems i am afraid are the breaks. this can be viewed in either a positive or negative depending on your mindset, i.e. losing a player weakens the team etc…, or enables our manager to bleed another player into the team and improves the chances of signing the best young players out their because they know they’ll get a chance. i know what side of the fence i’am in.

my only question is about what happens to the money made from the sale of player?, if its used to improve the team, celtic park and environment, other business, reduce pricing for fans etc… then grand. if its to make shareholders a little richer than mayb we do need to think again about the purpose that drives this model forward.

  14. That was the week that was.

End of day five, cut the patch in half today, cracked it, by monday won’t need them at all.

The cost is about 24 euros for a weeks supply, so the cost to stop is 24 euros, had a couple of wobbles, grumpy moments, but nothing new there, ever the grandweans call me grumpy as opposed to anything else, the mrs reckons I have been ok, so I must have been ok.

  18. I have been watching a game between O’Higgins and Palestino, from Chile, and have never seen so many shockingly bad decisions from the referee, red cards that should have been yellows, or no cards, and fouls that should have been reds, and yellows that should have been reds or worse, if you can get worse.

I don’t think he was bias in any way, just totally useless, tried to even things up and make a bollix of things, all good fun.

  19. Nite bhoys.

Going to miss the game ramorra, so hopefully a win is on the cards, but as I have heavily backed Jackies team to finish second in the league, I won’t be too upset if we don’t take the three points, would rather they finished 2nd as opposed to any other team.
