Respectfully disagree, Neil

907

I like Neil Lennon.  If Neil Lennon is talking about football, I shut up and listen.  But I respectfully disagree on other subjects.  If the last three years have taught us anything it’s that Celtic don’t need oldco or newco Rangers.  Unequivocally, Celtic Park is quieter since Rangers liquidated, the level of competition we previously had added many to the gates, none of us feel the anxiety of genuine sporting challenge, but so what?

If Celtic sell 40,000 instead of 50,000 season tickets are we mortally wounded?  The accounts would suggest otherwise.  Does it mean we cannot compete in Europe?  I refer to Neil’s record.  Does it mean we cannot attract quality players?  Well, it means we will not be able to attract some players, but I’m more than happy with the calibre of players we’ve recruited at the moment.  Good riddance to the parts of Celtic that went out the door when Rangers were flushed down the Liquidation Lavvy.

I’m going to cut Neil some slack.  I’ve been among Rangers fans and been generous enough to acknowledge income will rise at Celtic if newco ever reach the top flight.  It costs nothing to be magnanimous.

What we do need is competition, the like of which Aberdeen have given us in the league this season and they and Dundee United may provide next season, if current trends continue.    Congratulations are due to Hearts, who won the Championship before the clocks went forward, an incredible display of dominance, but as our two cup wins against them this season (3-0, 0-4) proves, they are miles away from providing the level of competition we see from Aberdeen.

Don’t have time to get dragged into a larger debate at the moment, but whenever Scottish football next turns its mind to strategic development, how to bolster Aberdeen and United should be top of the agenda.  I enjoyed our four games against United this month and the recent league game against Aberdeen.  More of them would be welcome.

We have a league split at the moment, where the top six hive off to play for the title, but it comes with only five games to play.  An earlier split, allowing us more games against those at the top, while creating more opportunity for teams at the bottom to pick up points from their peers, makes more sense.  Especially if more commercial income could be shared with the likes of Aberdeen and United.

Have you ever walked up Ben Nevis?  Will you ever do so?  It’s a big task if you are starting from scratch.  When is it safe, what do you wear, what if something goes wrong, how long will it take, what about nourishment along the way?

The Ben Nevis Huddle delivers much of what you need on a plate.  The Foundation have it all in hand.  You get to walk up the mountain with a couple of hundred other Celts.  They let you know what you need to know, check the weather for you and generally look out for things.  They have left no one on the mountain.  Yet.

What’s more, you get to do it in the name of Celtic FC Foundation, for our work with autism, downs, the homeless and destitute, those marginalised from our society, and those living in third world poverty.

It’s not the kind of thing you can sign up for the week before, the Foundation have lots to prep you for, so go sign up now.

  2. Good morning CQN

In my footballing travels during my footballing life i have had the pleasure of chatting with many football coaches from various European countries, what always struck me was when the subject of sectarianism and racism came up the disgust levelled at the fans from the Govan club was clear and knowledgeable, the evidence below is why

Sectarian chanting by supporters has incurred criticism and sanctions upon the club. In 1999, the vice-chairman of The Rangers Football Club Plc, Donald Findlay, resigned after being filmed singing songs regarded as sectarian during a supporters club event.[17][18][19] UEFA’s Control and Disciplinary Body have punished Rangers for incidents during European ties, most notably Villareal CF in 2006,[20] Osasuna in 2007,[21] and PSV Eindhoven in 2011.[22][23]

UEFA dropped its probe into complaints about Nazi-style salutes by Glasgow Rangers fans during their match in Israel against Hapoel Tel Aviv in February 2007, accepting Rangers’ explanation that fans had given their Israeli hosts the “Red Hand of Ulster” and not “Heil Hitler” salutes.

In examining the Billy Boys song, the control & disciplinary body admitted that the nature of the song concerned related to a social problem in Scotland. The body also believed that the disciplinary decision had to be taken in the context of Scotland’s social and historical background. The control and disciplinary body conceded that supporters have been singing the song “billy boys” for years during national and International matches without either the Scottish football or governmental authorities being able to intervene, The result is this song is somehow tolerated

That was 2007 when UEFA shamed Scottish football authorities they also shamed our media who also somehow tolerated this nonsense, they still do as witnessed at the recent LC SF, lets hope the SFA is soon populated with MEN who have real dignity and integrity to NOT tolerate the billy boys

    Enjoy your day CQN

  3. Morning all. We have the makings of another lovely day down here.

Just a wee word about Radio Scotland ( part of our apology for a national broadcaster) and it’s coverage of the John Guidetti wee sing song on Dutch TV. The commentator said the ditty was about the demise of the undead. Is she afraid to use the correct word: death? She skirted using the offensive word at all. Hun. Is this because if the general population were told the word they would be scandalised or would realise how ludicrous the charge is? She also informed us that Rangers supporters had reported the usage of the word to the Scottish Parliament as a word offensive to Protestants. I thought it was used as a term of reference for the undead not Protestants.

Scotland becomes more a parody of itself with each passing day.

Is it a coincidence that Real Rangers men are now in charge that the last two weeks have resulted in Brown on the front of the Sun and now this?

Just back in and discovered that the key word is ` Offensive` and not ` Sectarian`.

Even so, the English Lesson might still hold:

    `Huns` are offensive;

    `Huns` is not offensive`.

As a slight aside on this topic. I always considered certain huns as being Huns whilst another sort were Rangers` supporters. The difference was usually blatant Hunnery in the case of the former and sneaky Hunnery in the case of the latter 0:-)

  6. Lennon n Mc....Mjallby on

The distaste for the term hun only came about when the Huns realized the game was up on the billy boys, many of them referred to themselves as huns and were proud of it but it’s their way of trying to get us back,it’s childish,a campaign to stop a pet name that’s in no way sectarian.

Charles /BT – that is actually a good idea – as the PFA rep he would have to do his best on behalf of JG (assuming JG is in the union of course). The irony of a Hun arguing on behalf of JG would be funny.

I’m actually coming more around to the opinions of those who expect Celtic to do little to challenge this – this rising above them, appeasement attitude is just coming back to bite us more often – this current one is in the same bracket as Lenny calling Goodwin a fanny. Charge would never be brought against anothe club IMO.

    Parkheadcumsalford,

An important distinction is that it is Rangers supporters that said that Protestants should be offended. I know of no Celtic supporter or Catholic who refers to a Protestant as a Hun. Not one.

The Rangers support are desparate to pull us to their level so that the wee battle that has been going on in their minds can continue.

Their defence for the Billy Boys and the Famine song was that it was all a jolly jape. All of that child abuse stuff a wee joke.

Draw an analogy between a club and the same sectarian supporters being Hun like and it’s offensive!

I still see no apology from the same club for a sectarian employment policy that spanned over 100 years and survived the fall of the Betlin wall!

  9. Hunnery is evinced by how you live your life,

Not where you say your prayers…

    ….or to whom.

    HH jamesgang

  10. I don’t think Guedetti/Celtic will tackle the alleged offensive/sectarian nature of the song.

I think the defence will be that Guedetti was merely reciting the words of the song. A bit like putting words in inverted commas when quoting someone else.

  11. Before i go off oot for the day

I don’t attend away games in Scotland, it is my own personal protest to the somehow tolerated men at the SFA, i hit them in a way which i consider the only way they listen, by removing my money

I also have no real interest in anything the SFA promotes, none of their teams or cup competitions.

  12. Lunny was on Shortbread this morning. His take on the charge is that it’s more about making fun of the huns because they went bust than about the word hun being sectarian.

This could only happen in one country in the world. And it could only happen in relation to one mob.

Has the common law right of free speech been abolished in Scotland ? Has Scotland opted out of Article 10 of the European legislation re freedom of expression.?

It could only happen in one country in the world because in no other country in the world does taking offence at something mean that someone has committed an offence.

Mary Whitehouse was ridiculed because of the things she declared offensive;she’d be in her element up here.

  16. The Battered Bunnet on

For anyone form the Daily Record or SFA looking in this morning, I’ve used the asterisk to avoid giving offence in quoting John Guidetti quoting a song about himself, below:

    “The Huns are D**d”

Shhh… Don’t let the kids hear.

  17. BT 0749

I’m with you. Don’t respond, ignore it, and let them define publically what is offensive. What can they do about it? Absolutely nothing (I know a song that goes like that. ..)!

  18. A very happy birthday to Roy C. Not only one of CQN’s finest but also a genuinely good guy.

Ps happy birthday to Lucy too.

If the JG issue makes the News in Holland, it might just spread/go viral . That would show the SFA ( and Scotland?) in a very poor light and might (again) lead to the kind of change most Celtic/Football fans would like to see.

As the word `are` is only one letter short of a word which would offend some, I would suggest you also use an asterisk there ,too.

So, “The Huns ar* D**d ” or even ” The H**s ar* D**d” for the very sensitive.

  23. We are by far the biggest club in the country. Yet r taking up the rear from the sfa. Grow a set Celtic and get it dealt with.

  24. jamesgang@8.32

    Exactly.

There are times on here that the term ‘Green Hun’ gets used.

Id say it gets used because someone finds that persons attitude or behaviour questionable and not very nice.

  25. BOBBY MURDOCH'S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS on

Pretty soon, words like thug and vandal will be banned too. They also have a historical context.

And don’t even get me started on hooligan,a clear slur on those of an Irish background.

  26. The life scientific… Was on R4,

Good Programme, this week’s guest scientist was Prof Sarah-Jayne Blake and about her Research on the teenage Brian.

She cited as an example a extract from a teenage girls diary from 1969.

    Basically the teenage girls entry….

    Went to College

Was wearing my……. [details noted] John was there but didn’t talk to me, someone put a note in my bag about someone fancying me, think it’s Nick uuuhh! A man landed on the moon.

Now seems that girl’s set of priorities are quite typical for a teenage girl and it is evidenced by researched into the workings if the teenage Brain.

Now here’s the thing, where are the priorities of the Scottish Football Association? It’s international football week for goodness sake.

These people at the SFA who go on these anti-Celtic witch hunts have got a real job to do, they need to grow-up or ship out and let adults do the job.

  27. Quick note on the JG farce. If the word Hun is offensive towards prodestants, then surely this would apply to many Celtic supporters.

  28. It saddens me to say this but the bottom line is that Scotland is a bitter, sneaky wee country living 300 years ago. Not nice at all. Glad I don’t live there any more.

Because of that, Celtic will never ever be given a fair deal, it’s there for all to see.

Isn’t it strange that a 2nd Division club get national coverage in the UK media just when they change a director.!! Yeah the place stinks, no doubt about it.
