Respectfully disagree, Neil

907

I like Neil Lennon.  If Neil Lennon is talking about football, I shut up and listen.  But I respectfully disagree on other subjects.  If the last three years have taught us anything it’s that Celtic don’t need oldco or newco Rangers.  Unequivocally, Celtic Park is quieter since Rangers liquidated, the level of competition we previously had added many to the gates, none of us feel the anxiety of genuine sporting challenge, but so what?

If Celtic sell 40,000 instead of 50,000 season tickets are we mortally wounded?  The accounts would suggest otherwise.  Does it mean we cannot compete in Europe?  I refer to Neil’s record.  Does it mean we cannot attract quality players?  Well, it means we will not be able to attract some players, but I’m more than happy with the calibre of players we’ve recruited at the moment.  Good riddance to the parts of Celtic that went out the door when Rangers were flushed down the Liquidation Lavvy.

I’m going to cut Neil some slack.  I’ve been among Rangers fans and been generous enough to acknowledge income will rise at Celtic if newco ever reach the top flight.  It costs nothing to be magnanimous.

What we do need is competition, the like of which Aberdeen have given us in the league this season and they and Dundee United may provide next season, if current trends continue.    Congratulations are due to Hearts, who won the Championship before the clocks went forward, an incredible display of dominance, but as our two cup wins against them this season (3-0, 0-4) proves, they are miles away from providing the level of competition we see from Aberdeen.

Don’t have time to get dragged into a larger debate at the moment, but whenever Scottish football next turns its mind to strategic development, how to bolster Aberdeen and United should be top of the agenda.  I enjoyed our four games against United this month and the recent league game against Aberdeen.  More of them would be welcome.

We have a league split at the moment, where the top six hive off to play for the title, but it comes with only five games to play.  An earlier split, allowing us more games against those at the top, while creating more opportunity for teams at the bottom to pick up points from their peers, makes more sense.  Especially if more commercial income could be shared with the likes of Aberdeen and United.

Have you ever walked up Ben Nevis?  Will you ever do so?  It’s a big task if you are starting from scratch.  When is it safe, what do you wear, what if something goes wrong, how long will it take, what about nourishment along the way?

The Ben Nevis Huddle delivers much of what you need on a plate.  The Foundation have it all in hand.  You get to walk up the mountain with a couple of hundred other Celts.  They let you know what you need to know, check the weather for you and generally look out for things.  They have left no one on the mountain.  Yet.

What’s more, you get to do it in the name of Celtic FC Foundation, for our work with autism, downs, the homeless and destitute, those marginalised from our society, and those living in third world poverty.

It’s not the kind of thing you can sign up for the week before, the Foundation have lots to prep you for, so go sign up now.

  1. I’m already suffering withdrawal symptoms. Friday week seems a long time away. CQN can get very odd and tetchy when there is no football to concentrate on. The Guidetti charge is beyond comprehension, the SFA now want to ban banter, what on earth next?.

  2. New director of The Rangers Paul Murray has been spouting off about folk spending too much money during the near three year history of the club.

Presumably this is not the same Paul Murray who was a director of a club that spent so much it went bust, unable to pay hundreds of creditors?

If it is, then he displays a level of hypocrisy that is truly offensive.

  3. Huns: ” A member of a warlike Asiatic nomadic people who invaded and ravaged Europe ” This definition certainly just about sums up the died club.

  4. Isn’t it incredible that the SFA go to great lengths to ensure justice for all, even to watching Dutch TV, or do they just listen to complaints from certain quarters? This time the Board must stand up for our player with greater determination than was seen in the case of Tenov.

Just a thought if singing abusive things about the Pope is not sectarian, could it be classed as an insult to the Head of an independent State, the Vatican City?

Windy and fresh on the coast this morning.Tomorrow we do a trip to Granada before returning to Scotland. Almost the first sunny day yesterday . The countryside looks greener after all the rain but its been a washout of a holiday. Almost looking forward to being back home. One good experience was watching the classico in the local bar.

By coincidence I am just reading Ian McCallum’s book “the Gathering Storms” It is about Celtic and the Glasgow Irish in the years leading up to the first World War. There is a piece there about the origins of the word Hun into the Scottish Football vocabulary. Don’t have the IT ability to post it but it is on page 236 of said book if anyone else can put it on. I have heard a few people say that the expression Hun was first used in connection with Rangers following a game at Wolverhampton in 1960. This item would indicate it was already in use well before that. I started going to games 1960/61 and through to late 60’s I certainly heard the Rangers fans using the term Huns about us. I think it would be into the 1970’s before it became exclusively associated with Rangers. By then it was not just Celtic fans using the term to describe Rangers. I had friends who supported other teams who used the Hun expression for Rangers. In all that time though it was never used to describe anybody other than Rangers. It never had any direct “religious” connotation. Some years ago the local paper here “the NZ Herald” had the following question in its Friday sports quiz- “Which teams fans are known as Huns? a) Bayern Munich, b) Borrusia Dortmund, C) Glasgow Rangers.

  10. I find asterisks offensive.

They are prickly wee symbols that remind me of the hun mindset.

I remember one of my IT guys calling asterisks “twinkles” I much prefer that but it is going to take a national campaign to change the term from “asterisks” to “twinkles”.

Then there are those books about Twinkle The Gaul or Twinkle goes to Hibernia I can see difficulty there.

Then there are all those keyboards. Millions with the prickly wee symbol that knows it’s shame by lurking above the 8. On tablets or phones IT is bold enough to have its own key.

Down with asterisks I say. Replace them with smileys or a wee jug of beer.

So we would get ” the h:):):) are d:):):)

  11. The above which was sent before the final ” was my attempt at laughing at ourselves.

(For the avoidance of doubt and not to offend any asterisk lovers)

  12. I notice that Paul Murray is naming names this morning in the red tops, well as sure as sheet sticks to a goats arse you can bet that any of them named are not brothers.

Because that’s a no no, that’s why his name sake David has the get out of jail free card, the statement has Masonic DNA all over it, and there is nothing like stating the obvious from Paul Murray about the previous guys who where on the board as he himself was one of them, thats not mentioned of course.

I had a we tet a tet with Barcabhoy on twitter about this last night. I’m very much against using asterisks or politer version of something offensive unless it’s a bona fide expletive and children might be reading. Even then if it’s a direct quote I think it should be used in full.

This prettification of offensive words only seeks to lessen the impact of the offense. In this case Barcabhoy was referencing the lack of action over Amaruso racially abusing Ipkeba.

  14. The Huns want an FFin’ statement:

“We need a Club Statement on the term Hun

For too long people have been getting away with using the term Hun and not having to answer to it as a sectarian slur on protestants.

Its time the club come out and state the term is sectarian and we are deeply offended by its use.

The board need to fight fire with fire if they want to try and catch up on the PR battle we are so badly losing.”

    ——

“I agree, I’ve always felt that this is an area where the club has always let us fans down. We can change that with a statement saying that the club will no longer allow our fans to be abused in this way.”

    ——

“Yep, the club should come out and say this sectarian term to abuse our fans should

    Not be tolerated.”

    ——

“Well this term is used to describe us as something less than human.repugnent and something which should be hated by all.” [You got it, Sammy.]

    ——

“The context of the terminology “Hun”, is no different from calling an African American “Nigger” it is meant to insult Protestants Rangers supporters, and others who are non Roman Catholics who do not share their warped views it should be outlawed and the church of Scotland should be at the forefront of a concerted campaign to ban it.”

    ——

“Raman Bagwash seemed to have a smirk on his face. Closet tim that b*st*rd.”

    ——

“There moving from demonisation to persecution.”

  21. I cannot believe that the real culprits in this tawdry affair have not been singled out yet!

Surely it is the insidious Green Brigade, rather John Guidetti, who should be cited.

  22. I feel sorry for these young men who come to play for Celtic. Most of them have probably never been cited for anything in their lives before, Guidetti being just the latest.

They arrive in the Hun State and it’s open season on them, branded as being either racist, sectarian, offensive. drunk or a junk food eater.

The SFA and SMSM really need to get a grip on reality before they find themselves trying to decide if green is an offensive colour.

Just say no to the Hun State.

  23. Scottish football is run by people of a certain persuasion, they run it for themselves and the funny thing is they have such a high opinion of themselves and their establishment club that they fail to see that successive generations of blazer boys mismanagement has seen the total demise of our game at national level and at multi million pound corruption scandal at club level.

But hey don’t worry about that we will make sure that Tonev gets his and that gobshite Guidetti is brought to heel. I’m sure both players will be only to anxious to recommend our football backwater as a place to ply your trade.

The SFA’s blatant support for a corrupt financial basket case of a club run by criminals of all persuasions has effectively killed off any idea of integrity in our National Game.

A once proud wee football nation ruined at the behest of clowns like Ogilvie and Regan and Murray whose main aim in life is not to build our game into a competitive league known throughout the world but instead a vehicle to put Timmy in his place and this obsession which killed their club will also choke the life out of the other clubs trying to get on with football after the demise of the cheats from Govan.

It reeks as only Scottish football can reeking with sectarianism at it’s stinking core.

And we wonder why people to go to football anymore?

I have an interesting experience last week in Copenhagen, I hung out a couple of times with an Bluenose mate of men, proper football man and the least hunlike darksider I have ever had the pleasure to know and he has long since given up his season book and interestingly refered to his team as…wait for it…The Huns:))) I said to him you call them the Huns and said “Aye why no?

What he in fact said was, “They’re no the Huns anymore” Now I don’t know if he used that because he’s sick of what went on there or if he always used that?? He wasn’t that keen to talk football for some reason:)))

It is not specific to race, ethnicity or religion, therefore the term ‘hun’ cannot be deemed to be racist or sectarian.
