Return to SNP sender, when one becomes six

658

I’m not taking the SPFL- face recognition plan too seriously but that’s not to say the politics behind the suggestion should be ignored. Scottish football has no hooligan problems, compared England or the Continent our game is orderly and sedate. Until recent years there was no such thing as a flare problem, and offensive signing was a thing of the past.

All that changed when the SNP government got involved in 2011. Two managers shouted at each other after a game, three Rangers players were ordered off, and First Minister, Alex Salmond decided a summit was necessary to reign in the game’s wilder elements. What utter tosh.

Three weeks later, Justice Minister, Kenny MacAskill congratulated fans on creating a great atmosphere at the League Cup Final, which was notable for the re-emergence of the previously eradicated Billy Boys song. At an instant MacAskill rebased what was acceptable behaviour at Scottish football.

Since then the game has been trying to put the genie back in the bottle. The arguments were rehearsed in the CQN comments pages and elsewhere, “They are congratulated by the Government for singing The Billy Boys and we can’t sing about nationalist politics”, or words to that effect. Songs which had disappeared from the Celtic support lexicon were soon back and remain. Incalculable damage done by two incompetent clowns.

Since then the Scottish Government and a very small number (very small indeed) of senior officers at Police Scotland decided to subject football fans to the kind of surveillance that would make a military junta of a banana republic blush.

It’s a mess. Officers on the ground readily complain in private, all other political parties pledge to repeal the Offensive Behaviour’ Act, while sheriffs line up to mock cases arising from the Act. Football has been left to pick up the pieces left from a Scottish Government created problem. The Government refuse to accept any liability, will not repeal the Act and having celebrated a new, low, standard for spectator behaviour, seem quite happy with the situation.

Scottish football was doing very well before the Government decided to rebase what is acceptable behaviour. No football authority will succeed in any endeavour if the government is working against it. What the SPFL did was make a clear, if clumsy, attempt to return the problem to sender – the newly disinterested in football Scottish Government.

When one becomes six

I’ve scoured the internet today but cannot see any complaints about Celtic’s alleged “one up front” tactics. This season hasn’t gone to plan, but we’re making an incredible number of chances and scoring a remarkable number of goals.

One up front leaves space for, what is in effect, two wingers on each flank, and an attacking mid able to work inside the box.

It is a fine line you draw, and hard to regulate.. Politics is entwined with football. The nature of this thread is political, so to comment on it means a political post.

However I agree with you in that the referendum opened up politics and division as never before to the masses. This was reflected on CQN as well as the greater soceity. iMO that has been the catalyst for disrespect.

We can do something about it on the blog but for society I fear the genie is out.

With the advance of technology, maybe in the future a breathalyser will be part of the log in process. Nowadays Smart Phones let people post from anywhere. I would bet a breathalyser would eliminate many of the non acceptable posts.

HEBCELT TD67 in his opinion there is a clique on CQN now I dont know wither there is or not but suspect not.Why are you so concerned that you have asked TD67 about it repeatedly ? can you not accept right or wrong that is his opinion and move on ? H.H.

This might not be very palatable but I believe that CQN is simply reflecting the Celtic Support. After Rangers went into liquidation, winning games, Cups and League Titles was no longer enough. Different supporters judge success differently. Naturally, this leads to division and, for some, division leads to arguments and angry fall outs . The result is a divided support and a divided CQN .

PS In spite of the above and just to be clear, I am glad Rangers went out of business and I would like Sevco to follow suit.

There are users that are clearly trolls, and those are the one’s that I filter.

I hardly ever share opinions with Ernie, Neganon, Sydneytim but they by and large discuss their views in a civilised way and therefore I continue to read them.

Also in my case it’s 5 out of the hundreds of people that make comments. It’s not really stifling the debate.

Why give him pulonium that takes up to 3weeks to kill him.

He then would have plenty of time and enough anger to spill all the beans.

Why not take him out straight away?

Either like that Bulgarian spy, a brolly with poisoned tip jab to the bum on a busy bridge.

It’s like everything, sometimes it’s good, and other times it’s bad.

Don McClean is an incredible songwriter, however I don’t particularly like his music – if that makes any sense?

There probably isnt a poster on CQN who hasnt said something amiss, at one time or another.

    Paul,

    Thank you for your response.

It is oddly comforting to hear that the deterioration of the blog is partly due to pressure on your time. At least it removes any suspicion that it was being loosely moderated, as was my thoughts.

If I remember correctly, when the format changed, years ago, it was no longer possible to have Mods to share the regulation of comments.

Hopefully, with you back on board, CQN can reclaim a lot of what has been lost.

    Canamalar,

There was always the argument of what is “political” on the blog.

Some argue that life is political and I agree.

But, I think there is a difference between “life is political” and Party Politics.

The former was always with us, as in posters with differing political ideologies.

It is when Party Politics enter the debate that the bitterness starts. This went into overdrive pre Referendum and erupted again at the GE.

As well as being disruptive, it is, in Celtic supporting terms, parochial.

Hopefully in the upcoming Irish General Election, those of us, to whom it is relevant , don’t bore the pants off the rest of you.

The self policing that used to happen on here wasn’t one guy telling another to behave himself.

That is not an individual self policing.

From the start, there was a tone on the blog and interesting themes from Paul.

Anyone who joined in, recognised this standard and responded appropriately.

However, gradually over the years, it has eroded and some people think that they have an entitlement to spout whatever thought invades their brain and to do do in any way they like.

That is not what I call self policing.

  20. TD67
