Return to SNP sender, when one becomes six

658

I’m not taking the SPFL- face recognition plan too seriously but that’s not to say the politics behind the suggestion should be ignored. Scottish football has no hooligan problems, compared England or the Continent our game is orderly and sedate. Until recent years there was no such thing as a flare problem, and offensive signing was a thing of the past.

All that changed when the SNP government got involved in 2011. Two managers shouted at each other after a game, three Rangers players were ordered off, and First Minister, Alex Salmond decided a summit was necessary to reign in the game’s wilder elements. What utter tosh.

Three weeks later, Justice Minister, Kenny MacAskill congratulated fans on creating a great atmosphere at the League Cup Final, which was notable for the re-emergence of the previously eradicated Billy Boys song. At an instant MacAskill rebased what was acceptable behaviour at Scottish football.

Since then the game has been trying to put the genie back in the bottle. The arguments were rehearsed in the CQN comments pages and elsewhere, “They are congratulated by the Government for singing The Billy Boys and we can’t sing about nationalist politics”, or words to that effect. Songs which had disappeared from the Celtic support lexicon were soon back and remain. Incalculable damage done by two incompetent clowns.

Since then the Scottish Government and a very small number (very small indeed) of senior officers at Police Scotland decided to subject football fans to the kind of surveillance that would make a military junta of a banana republic blush.

It’s a mess. Officers on the ground readily complain in private, all other political parties pledge to repeal the Offensive Behaviour’ Act, while sheriffs line up to mock cases arising from the Act. Football has been left to pick up the pieces left from a Scottish Government created problem. The Government refuse to accept any liability, will not repeal the Act and having celebrated a new, low, standard for spectator behaviour, seem quite happy with the situation.

Scottish football was doing very well before the Government decided to rebase what is acceptable behaviour. No football authority will succeed in any endeavour if the government is working against it. What the SPFL did was make a clear, if clumsy, attempt to return the problem to sender – the newly disinterested in football Scottish Government.

When one becomes six

I’ve scoured the internet today but cannot see any complaints about Celtic’s alleged “one up front” tactics. This season hasn’t gone to plan, but we’re making an incredible number of chances and scoring a remarkable number of goals.

One up front leaves space for, what is in effect, two wingers on each flank, and an attacking mid able to work inside the box.

  1. South of Tunis, I shall miss your updates on life ‘way down South’. I pretty well quit posting a year ago, I didn’t need the hassle – but I didn’t post much anyway. In bocca al lupo.

  3. CQN was more than, is more than, JUST A BLOG. I frequented many Celtic fc related blogs before stumbling across CQN. It was at the time of Kano’s illness I joined, and quickly realised that it was more a community. The first function I attended was Kano’s fundraiser. Met BT, Oldtim indeed too many too mention, but I knew then that it wasn’t just a blog.

At the core of CQN was charity, both in the traditional sense, the Brother Walfrid sense, and respect in the way posters communicated.

As a community widens, often the spirit and tradition is diluted and you have a disconnect. We are seeing it here. All that is being asked is that respect is shown. No one is asking for views and opinions to be stifled. Debated yes. Debated in a respectful way.

Got to say, this new app is quality, not having to scroll past or avoiding reading those who set out to offend me is the cats whiskers, it must be frustrating for a few who have been trying for quite considerable time :)

Honestly guys I highly recommend it, use chrome as your browser and load up the Add-On “stylish” then block the posts of those you find offensive. I expect a few will include me on their list and that’s ok, if they don’t get offended by reading my drivel then they won’t need to respond. Problem is there are quite a few who read my drivel in the hope of being offended so they can complain and deliberately misrepresent what I said, there are very recent examples of this, I expect I’ve got a fair amount of complaints lodged with P67 that do not break rules but offend my special friends.

I hope to frustrate them for a long time to come.

Get “stylish” guys, you know it makes sense, save the moderators a lot of pain from the petty vendetta’s.

I currently have 5 names on my list and already it has worked a treat, from what I read last night.

  6. Thanks for the reply P67, of course that should be filtered out 100% My point (obviously not made well) was about people posting methods to filter out posters inputs on the site. This in my opinion will lead to posters only conversing with people of the same opinions and forming as kevjungle says cliques.

  7. My friends in Celtic,

IMO : Debate within acceptable parameters of the blog should be encouraged. Respect is the key word. Again in my opinion Alcora @ 08.44 hrs is absolutely correct in the use of filters. Some may deem the use of filters as misunderstanding the concept of a blog and indeed could be deemed as disrespectful to posters who post in good faith, but their side of the fence doesn’t suit.

Any poster who decides to quit is a loss. IMO the loss of Kojo has resulted in a void in reporting of our youth. Nobody has of yet managed to fill this gap. But again this is only my opinion.

In addition to past posters returning, we should be looking for new blood to join in the debates. Talk about filtering will not help in this.

IMO the only form of censorship on Paul 67’s blog should be from Paul 67 and his administrators.

    Hail, Hail to all.

  8. I’m still here and will try to post more.

Thing was that more better educated posters where saying what I was wanting to say,

But in a much more eloquent way.

  9. EL it is pretty sad when it comes to this, I would scroll past but can appreciate why some would want a filter. You and I have had the occasional tete a tete but nothing life threatening, lets hope it can get sorted out. H H Hebcelt

  10. Good to see you being able to more involved on a regular basis, Paul67. Your site is THE best site bar none. It would be great if it returned to the early days, where, on the whole, people did indeed show respect for one another.

From day one this blog has been one of the best places for political discussion I have had the good fortune to read, so when you claim it is something new I think you are trying to introduce revisionism, in the same way many go on about the self policing that never really happened much either, else drinking and standing would still exist in stadiums, no ? Self policing usually only happened when peers who knew each other made comment, rarely did strangers make any intervention.

Long thought self-policing was a dangerous idea which exposes anyone who indulges to harm and abuse, the club pay big money for security and it is their responsibility, let them do their job and let the support monitor how they do that job, the only people supporters should be reporting is security and police abusing their power.

    Greenpinata,

you’d think eh but I find I will likely find less offence and thus become less offensive if I filter out those who know what they are trying to do.

  16. Well said Awe naw n awe. I miss quite a few of the old posters but as someone who was also lurkin from the first year the road has always been bumpy on the blog and there have always been fall outs. The best of times have been when it was about different opinions not personalities. As soon as CQNers attack CQNers it goes downhill. When everyone accepts that we are all different and don’t get too precious about it this place is awesome. Play the ball peeps, don’t get holier than thou and just enjoy the company. Stayed away from posting while it was getting to angry and negative on here but it is still the place I look to to be home and connected to Celtic. Be nice to each other it’s not that difficult. Hail hail.

Good Morning Bhoys 5 Million for Joe Hanson if its true bite there hand off and get him to the airport. On the subject of filters on a blog site I can only see that as not getting the full benefit of everyones point of view If I blocked everyone who doesnt agree with me I would probably only end up posting to myself a rather pointless pastime. Now and again when the blog melts down to arguing and bickering it is usually the result of a personal attack on the poster and not so much about an article however for a blog that does not operate with moderators I think it works pretty well. H.H.

  18. Awe_Naw_No_Annoni_Oan_Anaw_Noo on

For clarification the filter is not something that Paul67 can control. It is your decision what content you want delivered to your browser. The filter is implemented at browser level.

You have stated many times that one of the endearing factors that differentiates this blog from other Celtic blogs is the diversiity of subjects.

I totally agree. I have learned much from this, and it has been a mainly enjoyable ride. I hope that can continue. Eg there can be no conspiracy theories if everyone agrees.

Ps: Aye Naw: if Mr Regan thinks there would be civil unrest if both Celtic & ” Rangers ” left Scottish football, imagine the outcry if he “let ” ” Rangers” join English football and tried to stop us . If this is correct, he is living in a different planet.

  21. Awe_Naw_No_Annoni_Oan_Anaw_Noo on

I have to be honest and say that I do not think the blog has improved due the proliferation of political posts which reaches a crescendo during election times. Especially local politics. CQN is the wrong blog for this IMHO..

Discussion/debate/ of Politics and Religion should be avoided at all costs .. that´s my rule….along with accurate reporting :-)

  22. IMO filtering causes cliques, but it’s up to the individual if he or she can’t handle the truth, then if it’s legal on the blog why not use it, personally I just scroll past most, others I pay particular attention too, and they are the ones who in my opinion attack the club and the board.

And in my experience it’s they’r way or no way, they can say all they want against the board the manager and no one is allowed to defend them?

That’s the bit I don’t get, aweright a go over the top a Wee bit, it’s called passion, all the …..awe I’m leaving, I won’t be back, ….to me is a Wee bit dramatic if you ask me, then again everyone’s different, but that’s your/ they’r choice and the best of luck to them, life goes on, no ones died yet from a post :)

    Greenpinata,

    :)

You’ll know from here that I generally respond like for like and have a few trigger points that set me off, if you know them then there are special friend who know them and use them, I think I have identified those who deliberately try to set me off, I have blocked them and no longer see anything they post, I expect any of the “gems” I miss are well worth the respite for me and the rest of the blog I suspect. My special friends will simply have to try another strategy.

  26. TD67 there is that word clique again, what do you define as a clique?Would you say I am part of a clique? Are you? Whatever lets hope we can get the blog back to being a more pleasurable experience. H H Hebcelt

  29. Very rarely posted but loved to read blog in the past. Very rarely read now. Dip in and out during work as its their time not mine but must say nearly everytime I do dip in I find myself incredibly bored in a very short time. I mostly use twitter now is can be both informative and extremely funny (clumpany blogs and tweets probably No 1 at the minute). Sadly I think this blog and comments in this format have run its course and the last 2 pages I have scrolled back this morning are simply a case in point.
