Return to SNP sender, when one becomes six

658

I’m not taking the SPFL- face recognition plan too seriously but that’s not to say the politics behind the suggestion should be ignored. Scottish football has no hooligan problems, compared England or the Continent our game is orderly and sedate. Until recent years there was no such thing as a flare problem, and offensive signing was a thing of the past.

All that changed when the SNP government got involved in 2011. Two managers shouted at each other after a game, three Rangers players were ordered off, and First Minister, Alex Salmond decided a summit was necessary to reign in the game’s wilder elements. What utter tosh.

Three weeks later, Justice Minister, Kenny MacAskill congratulated fans on creating a great atmosphere at the League Cup Final, which was notable for the re-emergence of the previously eradicated Billy Boys song. At an instant MacAskill rebased what was acceptable behaviour at Scottish football.

Since then the game has been trying to put the genie back in the bottle. The arguments were rehearsed in the CQN comments pages and elsewhere, “They are congratulated by the Government for singing The Billy Boys and we can’t sing about nationalist politics”, or words to that effect. Songs which had disappeared from the Celtic support lexicon were soon back and remain. Incalculable damage done by two incompetent clowns.

Since then the Scottish Government and a very small number (very small indeed) of senior officers at Police Scotland decided to subject football fans to the kind of surveillance that would make a military junta of a banana republic blush.

It’s a mess. Officers on the ground readily complain in private, all other political parties pledge to repeal the Offensive Behaviour’ Act, while sheriffs line up to mock cases arising from the Act. Football has been left to pick up the pieces left from a Scottish Government created problem. The Government refuse to accept any liability, will not repeal the Act and having celebrated a new, low, standard for spectator behaviour, seem quite happy with the situation.

Scottish football was doing very well before the Government decided to rebase what is acceptable behaviour. No football authority will succeed in any endeavour if the government is working against it. What the SPFL did was make a clear, if clumsy, attempt to return the problem to sender – the newly disinterested in football Scottish Government.

When one becomes six

I’ve scoured the internet today but cannot see any complaints about Celtic’s alleged “one up front” tactics. This season hasn’t gone to plan, but we’re making an incredible number of chances and scoring a remarkable number of goals.

One up front leaves space for, what is in effect, two wingers on each flank, and an attacking mid able to work inside the box.

  1. How deluded can the SMSM be? Comparing Leigh with Waghorn is only slightly less ridiculous than comparing Henrik and Monster Munch Boyd. Anything to big up the Sevco works team and convince the deluded zombies that they are a “big” team.

Thankfully here in Cork I don’t see too many zombie fans. The only confirmed one I ever met just got the sympathetic smile and it drove him mental, which was nice.

Kenny MacAskill getting it the neck on here and rightly so.

    He is a LINLITHGOW boy.

Did anyone see the shocking scenes at Forfar last night?

LINLITHGOW supporters throwing flares onto the park, then there was the pitch invasion by two LINLITHGOW supporters who were promptly knocked to the ground and cuffed by Scotland’s Finest.

Does anyone know if Kenny was at that game?

    mmmmmmmm

    ———————————————-

At the game? It wouldn’t surprise me if he was actually involved – bearing in mind that Kenny McAskill is the only MSP ever to be arrested for football-realted offences. He was detained by he Met Police in 1999 on his way to the England game at Wembly.

And yet he has the brass neck to sit and question the FAC guys in a stitch-up meeting in Holyrood…?

The guys a clown and he should be nowhere near that meeting. His party sees him as an appropriate person to be involved in this? Really??

    Twats.

  8. Owen,

Can’t honestly say I’ve seen a Zombie fan in Louth in 18 years here. I heard a rumour there was one in Drogheda but haven’t had the pleasure.

    Good post…

We need to retain the strategy of only signing players that are better than what we already have.

But rather sad you have to actually state that.

Rock Legend Animal Dies Aged 66

    January 20, 201

TRIBUTES have been flooding in from all across the world following the death of Animal, the legendary drummer with rock outfit Dr. Teeth and The Electric Mayhem.

Fans of the supergroup were shocked to learn of the passing of the iconic percussionist, who passed away at just 66 following a short illness. Remaining band members Dr. Teeth, Janice, Zoot and Floyd Pepper took to the group’s Facebook fan page to announce the sad news earlier today.

“We will never forget you, brother,” read the statement from the band.

“You kept rocking ’til the very end. Be at peace now, and we’ll play again in that great muppet theatre in the sky”.

Dr. Teeth and The Electric Mayhem had been performing together for several years before their breakout performance on the Muppet Show in 1975. The band were invited to continue as resident artists for the show, but it was Animal’s trademark intensity that won him the hearts of fans all across the world. His popularity won him appearances in every Muppet movie released, with his last role in 2014’s Muppets: Most Wanted.

“Although he had already been diagnosed with threadbaring syndrome, you would have never known he was sick,” said Fozzie Bear, speaking about the filming of M:MW.

“I’d ask him if he was feeling alright, and he’d just say ‘ANIMAL!!! HAAAAH!!!!’. That was… that was just Animal, you know?”

Other Muppets were quick to add their own tributes to their deceased colleague, with Miss Piggy stating that Animal was “a driving force in her life”, and the Swedish Chef adding that Animal always knew “how tee bork de bork”.

I’ve had a go at RD this year saying I thought he’d gone as far as he could but I have to hold my hand up and say that how he’s managed LG is amazing – I know LG is probably at his level in the spfl but the consistency and the change in the type of goals he gets now is brilliant. I thought lenny did a great job with sammi especially getting the team to know how to play him but LG is now the most important and consistent player on the team – I know it’s not a great squad, I know scottish football is only beginning to come out of years of abuse but RD well bloody done!

Every SNP MSP voted in favour of the Bill.

Every other MSP voted against the Bill.

I think most sane people would be inclined to believe that the legislation would be repealed if the SNP weren’t in power.

Try wwee exercise if you have time.

During the Thatcher/Major years, there would have been a fair number of Labour MPs who in op;position expressed shock, horror, disgust etc. at anti trade union legislation.

During Blair and Brown’s thirteen years of power, did they or their Labour colleague utter a word to have any of the anti union stuff repealed.

As I have remarked on previously. When Saddam invaded Kuwait, there were Labour Mps whose consciences would not let then support a Tory led war against Iraq. Some years later their consciences did not bother them when it came to a Labour led war on Iraq on the grounds of non existent weapons of mass destruction.

It is just the way politicians are. Liars aqd Chantie wrasslers.

Don’t hang yourself up by the knackers waiting on Labour to repeal anything at Holyrood.

  17. Still waiting to hear names of politicians who would have acted differently to Salmond in the face of media hysteria over Lennon and Sleekit. Also still waiting on Paul or anyone else telling me what Sleekit said.

What ever it was it was not trivial. It led to passing of a law that apparently treats young Celtic fans unfairly.
