Risky Ronny, win a new Celtic shirt

712

I can’t argue with John Hughes winning the Manager of the Year award.  Without glossing over the obvious semi-final issue, he’s taken Inverness to stick-on favourites for the Scottish Cup and, for a while, stuck with Aberdeen in the Best of the Rest fight.  The second half of the season have seen fortunes fade, but this reflects the resource paucity he has, compared to Dundee United or Aberdeen.

What’s just as clear is that Ronny Deila would have been a contender for the award.  Appointing a manager is always a risk.  Gordon Strachan was as safe a pair of hands as you could hope for in 2005, but it took nerves of steel for him to cope with some early reversals.  Tony Mowbray was also a known quantity, who should have done better, but rookie Neil Lennon pitted against experienced Walter Smith was highly risky.  Neil could have sunk without a trace, instead of winning all those trophies.

At least Neil knew the club and the club knew Neil.  Appointing a guy from one of the smallest professional clubs in Europe, totally unknown in the Scottish game until Celtic scouted Stefan Johansen, was an almighty risk.

What we recruited was a philosophy.  Celtic knew how a football team should be prepared, how to recruit, what tactical intelligence was required in a manager, and they travelled to Strømsgodset to find their man.

Had he qualified for the Champions League group stage, I reckon Ronny would have won Manager of the Year, but as this is the standard Celtic managers are judged by, he missed out.  There are no guarantees in football, so qualifying next season cannot be taken for granted, but he should be better prepared.  As should the players.  This is the target, Ronny.

SPECIAL COMPETITION ALERT

Celtic sponsor, Magners, have offered two of the new home shirts, launched yesterday, as competition prizes.  To win one, all you have to do is answer the following question:

Who is the Celtic assistant manager?

Email your entry to celticquicknews@gmail.com with the name of the assistant manager in the SUBJECT line of your message.  Competition closes at 1pm tomorrow, so you have one day to get your answer in.  Terms and conditions apply.

These are two fabulous prizes.  While you are entering the competition, you might want to donate £1 to our Mary’s Meals school kitchen campaign.  You can do so here.  Thank you.

Many thanks to Magners (who get what we’re about).

BGX @22:05 it is comparing apples to oranges, if you will pardon the pun ….

MA would have to pump a fortune into Newcastle in order for them to appreciably improve/qualify for the CL and make a ROI…. whereas he could invest buttons into Sevco, and they would challenge for the title/get a run in Europe and he would make his money back in relatively short order.

jamesgang/exslaemuir …. in a season or two, when Sevco are pushing us for the title (and, sadly, it will happen…. ), on RM/FF, they will all be crowing about how much they love MA, and how they knew it the moment they first saw him… and many on here will be moaning about how we let it happen.

I’m not sure Ashley will stay in football, he’s getting it tight here at the moment. Not a football man. Like I said wish he’d p**s off. We are a decade ahead of any challenge I suspect

My take on it, no matter what, they will never be, what they deemed they were, The Supreme Football Club. The power,s that be,SFA , SPFL, MSM, The Ludge,The Estabishment, and anyone else who may venture into the Loaby, or should I say the Wally Staircase,in the Big Hoose. If and when I pop my cork ( 70 next yr ) I will go and meet my maker, knowing no matter how many times they Polish the Brown Brogues, the shine has gone, and on present football matters, heard there is a strong rumour Elbows taken his Coaching Badges and moving to Killie, are Mc Gills buses short of drivers down Ayrshire way, btw they are concerned about missing his talents, brilliant.

My bhoy tells me we are interested in the Elche player, Jonathas De Jesus.

I saw him play 4 times recently for Elche. To my uneducated eye, he is a player. He has 12 goals this season, in a poor side. One less than Bale.

Don’t know if we could afford him though.

But even having De Jesus on the field might be worth the money.

BGX … I recall Weeminger’s analysis .. and I enjoyed it when I read it ….. and I go to sleep each night praying that you are right (“God, its Mike here…. I promise I will never ( … what I promised depends on the day ….) again, if you just please, finally and forever liquidate Sevco and turn Ipox into a shopping plaza”)….. but I am not at all convinced … fairness, decency logic and reason have no role in scottish football…. the game’s rigged.
