Rogic rises without impartial fan or journalist eyes

422

Back in October I wrote that Tom Rogic could be this season’s Player of the Year, or he could just as easily drift out of the team.  Injury (hamstring, of course) soon interrupted his run of form but Tom was inspired at Hampden in December, when the League Cup was brought back into the fold.  On this basis alone, Tom’s nomination for the Scottish Professional Footballers Association (SPFA) Player of the Year is worthwhile.

The Celtic story of this season is largely how we overturned a six-point deficit during the second half of the campaign.  The team’s rise was helped enormously by a spectacular January transfer window, but without a few excellent performers in the first half of the season, current form would count for nought.

Kyogo changed everything.  His goals, movement, respectful behaviour, the sheer joy he brought to Celtic cannot be overstated.  He was the muse all others took inspiration from.  Despite missing half the season, you could make a case that his impact outweighs all others.

Cameron Carter-Vickers did what we hoped Shane Duffy would do a year earlier.  He controls his immediate vicinity with an assuredness that allows the entire team to relax and get on with their with their primary function.  If not Player of the Year, he is a big part of the story.

The same goes for Joe Hart, who settled our 12 months goalkeeping problem and provides the same assuredness the team gets from Carter-Vickers.  Neither Kyogo, Cameron nor Joe received a nomination.

Callum McGregor did and is likely to win the award.  He has been a Celtic constant for eight years and a setter of world records for time served per season.  He is one of the players who could easily slot into any of the great European sides.

Whatever your views on PotY, these are the nominations came from players who have competed in the league this season; there are no impartial fan or journalist eyes involved.

  1. Good morning all from a dry but grey Garngad

Greenpinata- yes 2002-03 year was memorable but ultimately we won nothing. Well a fairplay award.

Anyway 2 more sleeps to what will end The sevcoKlanpunt in the box fc league campaign.

Bring it on, oh and by the way anyone hoping they will be knackered, there is no chance as they sat in 11 men behind the ball like Livi, Ross county, St midden, like every other boring team that should be banned from football.

  3. Whilst largely unconcerned with what sevco do these days, I agree that the result last night is a positive one for Celtic.

There’s enough of a temptation for them to be thinking about going through in Europe. May help a little.

Still think it’s all about what we do Sunday.

  5. It will be interesting to see what Ange changes on Sunday , with regards to our midfield.

I would say it’s 3 out of 4 for starting places, from

Mcgregor, Hatate, Rogic and O’Riley. As it’s looks as if Age doesn’t trust anyone else. Turnbull would have been considered, but still looks short of match fitness

Something that needs to change is we need to move the ball faster. Both Rogic and Hatate are guilty of holding on to the ball too long.

Rangers will defend for their lives on Sunday and play for a draw. We need to take our chances. A win and we can celebrate another title even if it’s not official.

Play Rogic from the start and leave big Matt for last half hour along with Giakoumakis.

Looking at last week’s highlights again, when the Rossy County keeper spilled O’Riley’s shot to the feet of Kyogo, I think the striker tried to nutmeg him, allowing him to save with his ankle.

As I say – take our chances on Sunday and we’ll put them to the sword.

  8. What is the Starz on

    Big wavy

They wont necessarily play for a draw…but I would imagine they will set out to defend and frustrate. Get the crowd edgy and hope to hit on the break and possibly sneak a win

  11. Just win Celtic and by as big a margin as is possible, dont slacken off at any point in the match, I’m certain the players did not enjoy the feeling of Hampden nor the way the game was refereed by the Hun with the whistle, take him out on it on Sunday and be brutally ruthless.

  13. Yesterday, when I looked we were 5/4 or so to win on Sunday.

Now it’s more like 4/5 (or 5/4 on).

Has something changed – the huns got some injuries last night ?

  14. For those advocating Rogic and Hatate to start. I assume you watched the last game where they were both bullied and bypassed by a very aggressive hun midfield? Instructions from GVB will be same again. Hatate will not get the time to showboat like he did in his debut and he is clearly lacking stamina after his season and a half of non-stop play.

I would play Bitton and O’Reilly alongside Calmac which allows Calmac to move forward more.

I appreciate there is almost no chance of that happening.

Betting odds narrow because more money is placed and the bookmakers adjust their odds accordingly. I’d suggest that after last night’s game in Leipzig, a fair bit of money went on a celtic victory.

I take your point but that was Hampden. Celtic Park is a different proposition altogether.

  17. Neither got bullied. They did get cheated.

“A well known BBC programme which explores the personal genealogy of a celebrity participant is actually based on a traditional Glasgow challenge to anyone who thinks they come from a superior background ….

    Who d’ye think ye ur?”

    Lol

  19. I think the team will be:

    Hart

    Ralston CCV Starfelt Taylor

    Rogic McGregor Hatate

    Jota Kyogo Maeda

Personally, I’d like to see Abada come on for Maeda later and O’Reilly swapping with Rogic second half. Turnbull for Hatate at 70mins. See how Kyogo is at 70 and if tired, bring on Giakoumakis

  20. OK. Then another question, When did Hatate last have a really good game? In his first 3 games or so he looked world class. Passing, shooting and vision were exceptional.

He then had several games where his shooting became more and more erratic.

More recently, he has disappeared from games all too often. His passing is now also suspect, giving the ball away more than any other player.

Fatigue is the most common reason given for his loss of early form.

    If so, rest him.

  21. Tom – it still seems a bit strange.

Sevco got a decent enough result last night.

Before the away goals rule got scrapped, a 1-0 defeat away put you on the back foot but IMHO the tie is now a 50/50 affair.

  22. RB Liepzig do seem to save their best form for the away games in Europe, the win last night was only their second home win in Europe this season. They lost away to Man City and PSG in the CL group stage, but beat Club Brugge emphatically. Since then in the EL knockout rounds they’ve won away at both Real Sociedad and Atalanta, after drawing both home legs.

In the Bundesliga they haven’t lost away since 5 Feb when they fell to leaders Bayern Munich, coming from a goal behind twice to eventually lose 3-2. Since then they’ve clocked up away wins at both Dortmund and Leverkusen, who occupy 2nd and 3rd in the league.

  23. Hatate is out of form so should be dropped but Rogic is a better player than O’Reilly so has to start.

  24. I see the FA have agreed a deal with Channel 4 to show all UEFA related England Internationals over the next two years beginning in June this year. Includes Nations League matches, home and away, against the likes of Germany, Italy and Hungary plus Euro 24 qualifers. Twenty matches all on terrestrial television on what is for now a publicly owned broadcaster. Meanwhile Scotland have been relegated to a Norwegian owned subscription deal. Maybe they think we are Scandinavian, which to be fair we did partly used to be. All credit to both the FA and Channel 4, great deal for England supporters.
