Rogic rises without impartial fan or journalist eyes

422

Back in October I wrote that Tom Rogic could be this season’s Player of the Year, or he could just as easily drift out of the team.  Injury (hamstring, of course) soon interrupted his run of form but Tom was inspired at Hampden in December, when the League Cup was brought back into the fold.  On this basis alone, Tom’s nomination for the Scottish Professional Footballers Association (SPFA) Player of the Year is worthwhile.

The Celtic story of this season is largely how we overturned a six-point deficit during the second half of the campaign.  The team’s rise was helped enormously by a spectacular January transfer window, but without a few excellent performers in the first half of the season, current form would count for nought.

Kyogo changed everything.  His goals, movement, respectful behaviour, the sheer joy he brought to Celtic cannot be overstated.  He was the muse all others took inspiration from.  Despite missing half the season, you could make a case that his impact outweighs all others.

Cameron Carter-Vickers did what we hoped Shane Duffy would do a year earlier.  He controls his immediate vicinity with an assuredness that allows the entire team to relax and get on with their with their primary function.  If not Player of the Year, he is a big part of the story.

The same goes for Joe Hart, who settled our 12 months goalkeeping problem and provides the same assuredness the team gets from Carter-Vickers.  Neither Kyogo, Cameron nor Joe received a nomination.

Callum McGregor did and is likely to win the award.  He has been a Celtic constant for eight years and a setter of world records for time served per season.  He is one of the players who could easily slot into any of the great European sides.

Whatever your views on PotY, these are the nominations came from players who have competed in the league this season; there are no impartial fan or journalist eyes involved.

Cracking story regarding Alex Harvey, didn’t realise that he was such a brave man, dipping into yer kerry oot.

    ……………………………..

Good one Brian…BUT….The very 1st time that I saw SAHB in Concert, they were playing ” Support” to SLADE in The old Greens Playhouse on Renfield Street, although I cant remember if it had become ” The Apollo” by that time…no matter ?

My mate had seen SAHB before in concert with Mott the Hoople, and he got us Two Tickets for the Front Stalls, very near the stage. My mate was very eager to have me see them for the 1st time.

Greens Playhouse/The Apollo held around 3,000 Punters.

As SAHB were the support group to Slade that night, they came on stage first obviously. At that time SAHB had ONLY ONE Album out, which was the Famous ” FRAMED” Album.

SAHB had just started playing their 1st song when the MAJORITY of the audience were giving them abuse, and shouting ” WE WANT SLADE “etc. ALEX and the Boys just ignored the abusive chants and heckling until midway thru their 2nd Song.

ALEX was at the microphone and ordered the boys in the band to stop playing. He stood there and SHOUTED into the microphone…” If you dont all shut up…..YOU wont get to see your FECKING Slade…as we will play ALL NIGHT! ” !

If I remember correctly, the ” House Lights” had came on….and it was clear to see that the Majority of the crowd were ” SKINHEADS”. There appeared to be some discussion with the stage Manager…or SAHBs Manager very close to OUR Seats…..with One Guy in a Suit telling the other…” Get them AFF…or theres gonna be a RIOT” !

At this point, it also appeared that my Mate and I were Two of the VERY few who had ” Long Hair”, so we became concerned about OUR Safety, amongst all these Skin Heads.

However, ALEX’s ” MESSAGE and THREAT” to the unruly Slade crowd… ” WORKED”…..and the Band continued to play with the unruly crowd actually beginning to ENJOY SAHB for the rest of their Set.

NO more heckling etc, just a great night of music….and Slade were pretty good also !

So ALEX was a ” brave man” indeed…HE wasnt about to allow some Skin Head yobos ruin the night !

PARKHEAD, I was in the front enclosure of the Liverpool main stand the day Kenny Dalgish’s Blackburn won the league (even though Liverpool beat them on the day). I was down with a ‘mixed’ group of football supporters (mainly Tims right enough) for a day out at Anfield and I had my Celtic scarf on. I even spoke to Mark Walters, who was warming up on the track, as I passed him. Give him his due he just grinned when he saw the scarf.

Had absolutely no problem all day – great day out for the lot of us, we saw the ‘Pool win AND Man Ure lost so Kenny won the league, to great acclaim from the Liverpool supporters in the ground.

Wow. I never realised SAHB supported Slade and Mott the hoople. I saw them in 1974 I think and also at paradise, along with the Who and many others.

Saw Mottle the hoople at another 1973 concert and the support act were Queen.

Loved going to Greens/the Apollo. The good old days 😉

Yes I remember the incident in the Janefield St tunnel in September 2018. On that day, there was no early intake of Rangers supporters, resulting in the south east corner of London Road being closed right up to and after the game with Rangers fans arriving as and when the wanted, right up to kick-off.

It was AFTER that incident and the subsequent inquiry that the 10 to 10:30

  7. Tom McLaughlin on

window was introduced for these games, meaning that after 10:30, a whole 90 minutes prior to kick-off, the Celtic support has freedom of movement and access around the entire stadium.

  8. I’d also give Giakoumakis a shout. Arriving injured, featured rarely in the first half of the season, then found his form just as it became clear Kyogo’s injury was longer term than first imagined after the winter break.

He was the player we needed exactly when we needed him.

  9. !!Bada Bing!! on

Tom McLaughlin- but you said it didn’t cause a problem, and was no inconvenience? It’s our stadium, our supporters, should be our rules, but it isn’t, because of no balls in the Board Room

  10. I seen Slade live in the Isle of Man in 1973. The only reason I mention it is we were due to go to The Summerland complex that night but changed our minds and went to see Slade instead, I was 18 at the time. There was a massive fire in that complex and 50 people lost their lives, so a lucky, lucky escape. By the way, Slade were excellent and still one of the best “Live” groups I’ve seen.

  11. lets all do the huddle on

so what about after the game on sunday? will springfield road and side streets off it still be a no go area?

  12. If it’s the players who decide, why isn’t it called the PPOTY award ?

Not sure I’d have Tom in our top 3 this year – Kyogo, Callum and CCV for me – but glad to have the big fella as part of the team but hey-ho, nothing to get too animated about.

    HH

  13. I got caught up in the tunnel crush, not once, but twice as I tried in vain to get through to my seat in the main stand. After the second time I was quite relieved to have got out of it and went home to watch the game on TV, fortunately, I live very near to the ground, por cierto.

I thought you made your point with regret and with no bigotry. The response to it, from one poster was a bit OTT.

I was on a sports tour of Germany in the late 70’s and our hosts managed to get us tickets to see Moenchengladbach’s euro tie with Liverpool (might have been a semi-final event). A group of around 6 Scots lads were in the German support right behind the caged enclosure of Liverpool fans. My abiding memory of the match is of a Liverpool fan with a big Red Hand NI flag climbing to the top of the cage and staring and shouting at the German fans for 90 minutes- I swear that he saw nothing of the game. He was surprised by some of the replies he received back in well-crafted English by the German fans but even more surprised by the less well-crafted English insults thrown at him by our group.

I can admire individual English players but I have never had any fondness or favouritism for any major English club. I put this down to growing up in an era when they were our rivals and not our superiors. My only adopted English team was Crewe Alexandra and they were chosen because, on a school trip to Belgium in 1967, the train driver told all our travelling party they were a better team than Celtic. I have never had to consider them as a threat to any Celtic team but I had to re-consider my support for them early in the millennium when, for half a season, they were riding high in the 2nd tier of English football when they had Dean Ashton scoring for fun. Thankfully, they tumbled down the table to their more natural position over the years and I could afford to restore my mild affection for them.

But I don’t care at all who wins the CL from the oligarch clubs even though I enjoyed the 4:3 game the other night.

  16. There’s a Falls Road Liverpool Supporters Club in Belfast…meets up in AndyTown.

    One in Derry…..etc etc

    ……………………

I was a MASSIVE T-REX Fan in the early days when Marc Bolan was at the height of his Fame ( IMHO)…the early 1970’s. Sadly, I became less of a fan in the MID/Late 70’s…as Marcs music became affected by his Drugs and Drink taking . So sad really, as he really came ALIVE when playing on stage.

I saw T-REX Twice just before they released their GREATEST Song EVER ( IMHO)…Which was ” Get it On”.

THAT Song, is one of THE Greatest Rock and Roll songs ever made.

When I first saw T-REX in the Greens Playhouse in 1971 ( I think), their TWO big Hits had been ” Ride a White Swan and then Hot Love”, and on the 2nd occasion that I saw them, they were just about to Release ” GET IT ON”….and played it on stage that night.

If memory serves me correctly…for my FIRST T-REX Concert in the old Greens Playhouse, the Ticket Price was just the grand sum of ” 35 NEW PENCE”, the UK Coinage had changed in FEB 1971 from the old LSD.

For my 2nd time to see T-REX, again in the ” Greens Playhouse” the Ticket price had RISEN to EITHER 50 PENCE or 60 PENCE for a seat in the stalls. We didnt need a seat as we were too busy BOOGING in the aisles !

At that 2nd concert, the T-REX Support Acts were…..SUZI QUATRO Before she became well known….and wait for it….THIN LIZZY !

So we got FAB value for our 50 or 60 NEW PENCE…Without doubt……Aye the good auld days indeed.

  19. Richard Gordon is stepping down from his role as Saturday Sportsound presenter after 30 years. I always found him to be very knowledgeable and fair in how he handled the show.

Let’s see how he is replaced and if the new incumbent is as balanced.

Gordon Duncan on radio Clyde impresses me. I imagine this could be the perfect opportunity for him. I would be happy with that scenario if he were to be appointed.

  20. My PoTY so far is CCV.Reads the game well..wins his challenges cos hes tough as nails..comfortable on the ball and gets the odd goal.hes also a hunskelper..my sort of player.

    BADA

No I didn’t. I said the 10 to 10:30 window, which is what we are talking about, hasn’t caused a problem since it was introduced. The Celtic support at Ibrox were in place 2 hours before kick-off, for the same reasons of segregation.

  22. you dont know what youv e got till you loose it.

Tom Rogic will be talked about and revered the same way we do Lubo when he eventually retires.

Many times I came away from a game berating Lubo’s contribution . but shouting for him to be first on the team sheet the following week, and then you were rewarded with sublime skills that made you drool. Skills and games talked about to this day. Rogic will be the same.

Big Tam, on his day, is untouchable.

  23. Tom McLaughlin on

    LET’S ALL DO THE HUDDLE

so what about after the game on sunday? will springfield road and side streets off it still be a no go area?

No. The Rangers supporters will be kept in the stadium until Celtic supporters have cleared the area in London road where they exit.

The only restriction is the barrier in the middle of Janefield tunnel will be closed after the game, so you can’t move through from east to wast and vice versa.

  24. My 2 heroes as a kid Dalglish and Deans

Big Billy was just a superstar to me as young bhoy..met him once in ’75 at the supporters rally in the Kelvin Hall..if i temember correctly Mr McGrory was also introduced to crowd that night too…i was 8 and was in total of him..met Dalglish the next year..they were great nights at the Rally.

  25. lets all do the huddle on

No. The Rangers supporters will be kept in the stadium until Celtic supporters have cleared the area in London road where they exit.

have just seen a tweet from JPT saying that will be decided and communicated during the game so its not certain what will happen yet

  26. Weebobbycollins on

Hrvatski Jim…yes, Richard Gordon was always fair in his assessments, fortunately, he’ll still be around for Sunday and mid-week games. It is a concern who will replace him as the beeb seems to have a fondness for ex-employees of the dark star. Your suggestion of SSB’s Gordon Duncan is a good one. There could definitely be a place for him there. I just hope they don’t promote from within the sports department. No more ebt recipients please.

  27. NOTTHEBUS

Agree..Big Tam is a match winner and still a hunskelper.

Haha..Agree to about Lubo..could do yer nut in..but guys like these 2 win ye matches out of nothing and can score the most amazing goals.

  28. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

Always interesting to see how player’s perceptions differ from fans’.

IMHO, Hart, Carter-Vickers and Kyogo have made the biggest contribution this season with honourable mentions for Juranovic and Abada.

Calum and Tom have contributed significantly but I actually think both have played better in recent previous seasons.
