Rogic rises without impartial fan or journalist eyes

422

Back in October I wrote that Tom Rogic could be this season’s Player of the Year, or he could just as easily drift out of the team.  Injury (hamstring, of course) soon interrupted his run of form but Tom was inspired at Hampden in December, when the League Cup was brought back into the fold.  On this basis alone, Tom’s nomination for the Scottish Professional Footballers Association (SPFA) Player of the Year is worthwhile.

The Celtic story of this season is largely how we overturned a six-point deficit during the second half of the campaign.  The team’s rise was helped enormously by a spectacular January transfer window, but without a few excellent performers in the first half of the season, current form would count for nought.

Kyogo changed everything.  His goals, movement, respectful behaviour, the sheer joy he brought to Celtic cannot be overstated.  He was the muse all others took inspiration from.  Despite missing half the season, you could make a case that his impact outweighs all others.

Cameron Carter-Vickers did what we hoped Shane Duffy would do a year earlier.  He controls his immediate vicinity with an assuredness that allows the entire team to relax and get on with their with their primary function.  If not Player of the Year, he is a big part of the story.

The same goes for Joe Hart, who settled our 12 months goalkeeping problem and provides the same assuredness the team gets from Carter-Vickers.  Neither Kyogo, Cameron nor Joe received a nomination.

Callum McGregor did and is likely to win the award.  He has been a Celtic constant for eight years and a setter of world records for time served per season.  He is one of the players who could easily slot into any of the great European sides.

Whatever your views on PotY, these are the nominations came from players who have competed in the league this season; there are no impartial fan or journalist eyes involved.

  1. The gate closure thing under the Jungle isn’t a problem. Just walk along the internal walkway above until the correct side of the gate for exit. I’m in 406 and walk to the exit around 403/404 and down the stairs and off to town

Tom Mclaughlin- read back, you said both, anyway, the bottom line for me is they should be banned on Sunday, and we should be able to go to our own ground, safely, and by whatever means we normally do.

Re POTY – I’m with BIGWAVY, DREW and others who vouch for Cameron Carter-Vickers.

The prob for Cam is that he’s so unerringly capable and consistent that it’s no longer a big thing to see him cruise thru games without being flustered; it’s taken as read And his assured excellence somehow looks pale against the more explosive or eye-catching types of players (typically goalscoring forward types).

Temperamentally, he’s ice cool too; how many CBs don’t take the bait, don’t react or get into histrionics?? Very few when you think on it.

Guy’s an absolute Rolls Royce; make his deal our No1 priority – I said before – heaps better than the Boyatas and Denayers – the lad is the next VVD!!

I said since the 10 to 10:30 window for Gers fans entry and temporary closure of that corner of London Road was introduced, there hadn’t been any issues. You came back and said what about the crush in Janefield St tunnel. I pointed out that the 10 to 10:30 window came AFTER that incident and in response to an inquiry. It is very clear what I said.

  8. I reason there that day at Easter Rd in 1973.

The thing I remember most about it , was the crush trying to get in at the Celtic end.

    Was worth it though.

Great story about Alex Harvey. It reminded me of one night a very long time ago ( September 1966 to be precise ) when a girlfriend and I had dead centre seats 6 from the front at the the Odeon on Renfield Street to see the Stones. There were several opening groups, including the Yardbirds, but first on were some virtually unknown Americans, namely Ike and Tina Turner.

The crowd was in full voice, chanting “We want the Stones”, drowning out the emcee, and Ike and Tina were met with a chorus of boos, then a repeat of “We want the Stones.” Tina was wearing not much more than a fake leopard skin dish towel, showing these fantastic gams all the way to her tush. When she started gyrating to I think, “River Deep, Mountain High”, I have never heard a crowd shut up so fast! Every male in that audience had his eyes glued on her, including me – I nearly went blind!

When they finished their set, they got a huge standing ovation, and I became a lifelong Tina fan.

Thanks for the links big fellah! Kyogo’s ability in the air has led to some likening him to Henrik, but Dixie Deans was also absolutely terrific in the air, and a tremendous header of a ball.

Did you know that Rod Stewart was at Easter Road that day? Not a lotta people do…..

  11. Remember Derek Rae of BT Sports good match Commentator ,I know he is based in Germany now ,and would a Position at the Hun Rife Corporation interest him hope so,Personally I think another Hun supporter in there will get it ,(Kenny McIntyre or the other Aberdeen supporter who commentates on Red TV,can’t remember his name )

Its funny that you speak of ” Jack Palancer’s”….In my last ever JOB up to 2009, the BHOYS that I worked with called ME…” BIG CHANCER”….That was my Nickname for those 5 years.

NOT a lot of people know that…LOL.

I used to have a Cat called ” Chancer”, before he passed away and I got another and I called him ” ROCKY”. I had to get Rocky Bhoy put down last November. He was my best Pal for over 15 years, and I still miss him….and ” Chancer” of course.

ERIC BLACK of Aberdeen FC was superb in the air. THAT Bhoy could ” HOVER”……….and then along came HENRIK !

As a young man I had a ” SKILL VIDEO” of the greatest ever…PELE.

I think he was only 5ft 10inches…but he was a great header of a ball, and could certainly ” Hover”. In that Video, PELE was describing ” HOW to HEADER a Ball” correctly. He said….” Keep your EYES OPEN….and your MOUTH Closed” !

if you watch on Video and/or Youtube the World Cup Final in 1970 in Mexico. Brazil beat Italy 4-1…and what a game !

MOST Folk talk about Brazils 4th Goal that day from Carlos Alberto the Captain…and Yes it was a great Team Goal and finish from Alberto….However, since those days…I have ALWAYS tell folk to have another look at Brazils 1st Goal that day.

It was a Header by PELE…..and he had to move backwards and beyond an Italian defender to stretch his neck muscles…and expertly placed his DOWNWARD Header into the corner…WHAT a Header and WHAT a GOAL !

That is my all time FAV PELE Goal.

Obviously, i wasnt born when Jimmy McGrory was doing his stuff..

I’m sorry to tell you that Tina Turner is currently very seriously ill from stomach cancer and rejection of a previous kidney transplant.

Here is the lovely lady, back in 1964.

    She could certainly move!

For those who haven’t seen it, “What’s Love Got to do with it?” is a superb movie.

  24. RACIST OVERTONES TO THE NICKNAME DIXIE (as in the Everton one):

During his career he was known as Dixie Dean. This was a reference to his dark complexion and curly black hair. Dean hated being called “Dixie” and insisted that his friends and acquaintances used his real name. His biographer, Nick Walsh, argues in Dixie Dean: The Official Biography of a Goalscoring Legend (1977) that Dean felt that the term “had connections with colour problems connected with the Southern states of America, and therefore contained an inference that he was of that origin, or half-caste.”

Dean was leaving the pitch after a game in 1938 when a spectator called out: “We will get you yet, you black bastard.” Dean went over to him and punched him in the face. A policeman came running over but instead of arresting him, shook him by the hand.

    —————————————

I voted for CCV on the Celtic site for POTY but I think you do Boyar and Denayer a dis-service.

Dedrik left Celtic to become a regular and captain with a mid table Bundesliga club, Hertha Berlin. Jason Denayer, after leaving us was loaned out to Glatasaray (2x) and a then- Premier League Sunderland before getting a transfer to Lyon. He has been a regular with every club, apart from this season at Lyon.

Both have played 29 and 35 times respectively for a top ranked Belgian side and both are likely to be selected for the November WC in Qatar in November, if fit.

Both these lads would have served us well if they had stayed but CCV does deserve to be considered as good as them currently

Nice to hear from you.I did think the response was a bit OTT but then it all depends on what sort of mood he

    was in.I was merely outlining the source of merriment the loyalist fans of Liverpool were in.The same fans operate out of clubs that align themselves to loyalist paramilitary groupings and form a close link to orange bands and orange lodges in Liverpool.The same hordes are also to be found at a venue in Govan where they spew out their bigotry with fervent desire.That was the main plank of my post describing that ilk who were in a joyous mood because of the result.As I have already stated one team for me and I sign off;
