Ronny Delia Man City connection, where he could end up as coach

241

New manager of New York City, Ronny Delia, knows how to land a big job. He won a miracle Norwegian title with Stromsgodset and won two Scottish Premierships and a League Cup in his two years at Celtic. Since then, he has managed Valerenga, where he has not achieved anything notable.

He first came to Celtic’s attention as a potential assistant manager before being offered the top job. He delivered the obligatory titles at Celtic, and got unlucky in a few cup competitions, but conceding a late goal at home to Maribor, a debacle against Legia Warsaw before finally losing out to Malmo for a Champions League place cast a shadow over his time here.

There’s lots about the business model of the MLS I don’t get, but the move from having David Villa being managed by Patrick Vieira in 2018, to Ronny managing Gary Mackay-Steven in 2020 looks like a club beginning to live within its means.

New York are owned by City Football Group, the parent company of Manchester City, who Ronny knew prior to his appointment at Celtic.

Ronny is a clever man, he will be a better manager now than he was when he arrived in Glasgow in 2014. If he does well in New York, there’s a good chance he will end up somewhere in the Manchester City coaching setup.

Who was the last team to knock us out of the CL qualifiers who had a greater turnover than us?

Go on I know the answer

The year after that platini started the Champions route which have clubs with a greater financial clout ( not as big as EPL or bundasleague etc ) a massive advantage to qualify. Most of the lesser champions do expect you know who !!! Us as we won’t invest in players like other teams do. Eg Slavia Prague. Approx 30m euro turnover and they signed a 10meuro player

What Chance Do we have when we invest about 10% of our turnover. Not much. Hence the 3 out of 5 failures

Very many thanks for all the info re Taormina, a lot of it is the stuff you do not read in the brochures, which is really what I was looking for. It does sound perfect and the only very slight reservation I have is that my good wife has a”dickie” knee, but I’m sure we can find our way round that.

As I said, I really do appreciate the time you have spent on my behalf, very grateful indeed.

  3. SydneyTim it was from Season 2018/2019 when the CL Group Stages pot money

was increased to 40 Million pounds before that Season it was worth 30 Million

    pounds for quite some time.

How much is the CL worth if ones Club manages to win this yearly compition?

    What’s the overall prize money?

“We must get away from the mindset that says when things are going well it’s all about the players, manager & coaches, but when we falter, it’s down to PL & the board.”

We have to take a reasonable view as to how we have achieved our recent success (treble treble). I fail to see how our recent success stems from the vision and prudence of our executive when the fortunes of the club were quite different in the years leading up to BR’s arrival. Our recent success was not based on incremental improvements and the fulfillment of a long term strategy; like most of our actions, it was reactive. We were embarrassed by Sevco in the SC semi-final and hit the panic button and got BR in. The fortunes of the club then changed dramatically.

“The board decides that PL is worth £x plus incentives. If he meets, or, exceeds those targets, which I’m sure will be football & financial, then he deserves his pay.”

That line of argument only works if the initial decision by the board is proportionate and is a prudent business decision. The issue is that I think it is not; not for our market; the size of our club or even for the size of our business (looking outwith football)- see my previous comment re bonuses of FTSE 100 CEOs.

“It could well be that it would take 3/4 people to replace him – he may, due to his contacts and expertise, be responsible for 40% of the club’s income. We don’t know.”

I’m unsure how anyone could land on these figures or come to the conclusion that PL is responsible for circa £30m our of revenue.

“What we do know is that his time in charge has been the second-most successful time, football-wise, in the club’s 132 year history. Celtic is now the most financially successful sporting entity in Scottish history. That is quite a record. Will whoever replaces him, on a salary of say £250k/year, which is what some on here think PL should be paid, emulate his record?”

We had a turnover of £50m (not far off our turnover in 2001) for the two seasons before BR arrived. It’s amazing that the arrival of BR coincided with Celtic posting record numbers…it’s almost as if he might have had a hand in changing our fortunes or was responsible for our phenomenal success.

  7. Forget that !

Celtic Ticket Office informede me I had already bought my ticket on 20/12/2019 !

It’s probably worth nearly the same amount as winning the EFL

As regards to PL he is a money grabber & that’s a fact he was

moaning his head off when he appointed Tony Mowbray back

in Season 2009/2010 & when it all went pear shape he was

complaing that he only received £250,000 Bonus that Season

He states that he only has our Club’s best interest @ heart

however is this really the case & action speaks louder than

  9. THE HANDS CANT HIT WHAT THE EYES CANT SEE on 9TH JANUARY 2020 11:11 AM

Our results in the Champions League proper under BR were shockingly bad. Not just the 12-1 and 9-0 aggregate losses against PSG and Barca, we picked up 6 points from 12 games and were easily beaten at home by BMG and Anderlecht. Our sole victory one year was against the worst team I’ve ever seen play at the group stages.

Gordon Strachan’s Celtic actually beat the good teams they met in the group stages – Man United who were semi finalists that year and won the Prem and Milan and then took a Milan team who went on to win it to extra time in the knock outs.

  10. I think it’s realistic to expect that in the social media realm, the bigger sites will be seen as “influencers” in terms of Celtica sentiment.

Even with the proliferation of the many smaller, fringe sites……This Dear Green Place will still have a target on its back.

Our genial and accommodating host is quoted in the media and has appeared in broadcast opinion pieces. Clearly there are those who feel his opinions have some worth.

Now, given that this Dear Green Place has spent the majority of its energy on discussing the financial aspects of football in Scotland, its affects on our beloved Celtic, and given that the huns Liquidation has been at centre stage, I’d wager, realistically that we will have attracted attention from those who support the huns or are financially rewarded to ensure the best outcomes for huns – especially when times are tough ( very tough) at The Edmiston Folly.

Managing information, disinformation, fake news and corporate reputation is big business everywhere.

Although I would have no insight into it at all, it is my opinion that it is realistic to think that those who manage the information front for our sleekit neighbours would have reason enough to be on here, managing the message as best they can ie) emphasising the negetives and minimising the positives.

( Of course, genuine Tims will also have reasonable gripes that have always been aired here, that’s where the sleekit hun gets lucky a s it’s usually difficult to discern one from the….ither!)

    :)
