Rosenborg or Valur, if Celtic progress in Champions League

231

If Celtic overcome Armenian champions Alashkert in the Champions League first qualifying round, they will face either Icelanders, Valur, or our old pals, Rosenborg, from Norway.  The Norwegians and Celtic will be overwhelming favourites to progress from the opening round.

Rosenborg gave Celtic a fright a year ago when they took a 0-0 draw from Celtic Park in the Champions League third qualification round.  A James Forrest goal settled the return in Celtic’s favour.

Rosenborg went on to eliminate Ajax from the Europa League, winning home and away, before finishing third in their Europa League group behind Zenit St Petersburg and Real Sociedad.  Norwegian teams play through the summer, so Rosenborg have played 27 games since their winter recess.  This will be a stiff test for Celtic, should the first round go to form.

Ref the demise of CQN & the changing of the posters guard etc

I have two points on that..

    1) When most of us old timers staggered through the front door of the CQN lounge bar years ago, there was no social media or at least much less & few of us seemed to bother with it.

On Channel 4 this week, a rotund man called Jaron Lanier (himself an exile from Silicon Valley) asserted that social media is bad for us, particularly children. Here’s the piece in question.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kc_Jq42Og7Q

The influence of some of that social media disease has been more evident on CQN. We always had eejits & I don’t exclude myself from that stuff, but it seems to have become much more toxic.

    2) The ambience on CQN is ostensibly one of tolerance, bonhomie & the rich fabric of the broader Celtic family – but it is often an intolerant place. “Open to all” is just a catchy slogan that many folk use mainly to give themselves a nice glow about being a Celtic fan. If this place was genuinely open to all, then respect would be evident constantly, especially & particularly to those whose views are not mainstream CQN.

If you subscribe to the “Open to All” ethos – and any genuine self respecting Celtic fan should – then no Celtic fan should feel unwelcome on here, regardless of their political, religious or social views.

Some suggest posts about football only, but even those have led to chairs being knocked over in the lounge bar at the CQN Arms.

    ———

That is precisely the point I have made numerous times.

Nobody should be intimidated by ” high quality ” posts: .

Every post and poster should be equally valued. And for avoidance of any doubt, i value each post equally regardless of who the poster is.

As I’m on my high horse, I have seen numerous quality posts on here go unremarked , whereas certain posters only have to type anything and they receive tumultuous acclaim.

    Cest la vie.

    On books

Last summer I read a few that I thought might help me understand the Trump voters mindset

    So I read

White Thrash (the 400 year untold history of class in America)

    Hillbilly Elegy

    Expelling the Poor

    Strangers in Their Own Land

The latter was very interesting, written by Arlie Russell Hochschild a liberal professor from Berkeley who spent year living among a mainly white bible belt type community in Louisiana. Fascinating insight

My conclusion .The American Dream is a big fat lie.

Just made the mistake of watching STV news. Football reportage featured a little bit on hearts , a much bigger bit on Sevco ,including Raman Bardwash in their Spanish training camp, interviewing Declan John on how signing for ‘Rangers’ had got him back into the Welsh squad, how they were preparing for the Europa league blah, blah.

Then……nothing on Celtic. No mention of our CL qualifying draw. Zero. Zilch.

I won’t be watching it again.

  16. Gordy, yes I do pay a sub. He has nailed King and Murray, has an excellent grasp of what has gone on at the cheating SFA, posts some outrageous stuff and challenges those he talks about to take him to court. Been reading his stuff since his LSE days where he had a fair few ding dongs with a poster called salted popcorn. I like his combative approach and his occasional rants.

Sips everyone asks for votes, I voted for all of the aforementioned.

If the English pundits are setting your teeth on edge, now is a good time to remember that a small republic in Europe’s poorest country, Moldova, has its own dedicated TV channel. Scotland doesn’t. The Faroe Islands (pop.50,000) has its own dedicated TV channel. Scotland doesn’t.

  18. Some of JJ’s early stuff was very anti Celtic and Celtic fans, but he certainly now gets tore into the Sevco board. He apparently now lives abroad in fear of violence from the hun lunatic fringe. He’s always begging for money.

I have learned more about the goings on re the SFA and Sevco on here and through Phil and SFM. JJ has pulled together a lot of material and presented it in his pugnacious style.

  19. CRC – If I do make your bash on June 30th I’ll be carrying a set of golf clubs and an “overnight bag” as Ill be on my way home from the previous days festivities in Aberdour (see main article above!). Aberdour plan this year is to be dropped there on the Friday morning by the wonderful Mrs Baldie but getting trains back to EK on the Saturday – possibly being Aberdour to Haymarket to Queen Street (taxi to and from the Bon Accord) to Central to EK….

  20. Ger57 correct but I had to look up pugnacious! Every day is a school day. He has been so close to the bone that the hordes have chased him, this is a shocking indictment of our society and Police who have failed to assist him in any meaningful way.

Yes I read a review of the book in the Irish Times and recommended it to several people all of whom have read it and enjoyed it.

Of course I still havent got around to it. But I will.

While I think of it Wily Vlautin is a writer I got into recently. Writes a lot about the so called “losers ” in the American underbelly. But does so with great empathy

Must admit it took me a while to make my initial post, mainly down to my daughter and son pushing me to get involved as i was down after my ma passed away and they thought it would take my mind of things and hopefully gee me up.

  25. I ordered Phil’s book The Squad last week, looking forward to it’s arrival. Has anyone read it?

  26. Gordy yes I get that he took offence to Phil calling him heroically outcast or something similar and has slaughtered him ever since claiming his only sources are Roy Greenslade and Jim Spence. I disagree on this one and would prefer if he eased up on the anti-Phil stuff.

Can’t remember my first toe in the water post, but I had just moved to Melrose & I stumbled over the blog by accident. It was just a wee place to catch up in the Celtic blether & the blognames seemed exotic back then.

Some great friendships but mostly long distance. Sounds a bit like social media when I put it like that.

Then I realize that CQN is actually social media, just not Twitter or Facebook

My recollection is that the blog in the old days was more self regulating than it later became.
