Chris Sutton has labelled Rangers’ players delusional for comments made by some of the Ibrox first-team in the wake of Sunday’s Old Firm derby. Click here for the latest results, fixtures and stats>>> Celtic won the Betfred Cup semi-final 1-0 thanks to an 87th minute goal by Moussa Dembele. Brendan Rodgers’ side missed a good few opportunities prior to taking the lead, in addition to having a goal harshly disallowed early in the second half. Possession and shot attempt stats mirrored the first Old Firm game of the season, which Celtic won 5-1, though Mark Warburton insisted his side were closing the gap on their nearest rivals. The Rangers manager was backed in his opinion by a few of his players. Goalkeeper Matt Gilks suggested Rangers were the better side for parts of the game, while Josh Windass insisted yesterday his side could still challenge for the title. The hopeful words coming from the Ibrox camp clearly rankled with Sutton, who derided the comments while appearing on BT Sport’s coverage of Celtic’s trip to Ross County. He said: “There’s a lot of delusion coming out of Ibrox at the moment. There’s an enormous gap. The scoreline was close but Celtic were miles better than Rangers. There is denial. “I don’t get, as a former player, all the rubbish and talking about “title challengers” and how they “outplayed Celtic”. They’re not in Celtic’s league. They should come out and say Celtic are the benchmark and we need to work very hard

Your entire post was very negative after a decent 4-0 victory in a tough match away from home. I asked the question – a centre half to replace who? You haven’t answered. Toure, Sviatchenko and Simunovic will rotate. Lustig can drop in and we have O’Connell, Boyata and Ambrose as well as young McCart. 8 Centre half options so why do we need another? Or does being a sticky mean you don’t know the squad?

Nir Bitton showed what he brings to the team; he solidifies the midfield and closes gaps. Much the same way he did away in Astana when we were struggling to contain them. It’s OK to support the escaped goat at times! :>)

Roberts scored the first; played in Armstrong for the 2nd; his deflected shot fell for Sinclair at the 3rd; he laid it on a plate for big Moussa at the 4th.

  6. I think we are in for a tough game on Saturday. It could be a real belter. Full house at pittodrie and a team who have a point to prove and a squad of solid professionals.

Looking forward to it. Then CL next Tuesday. Excellent. Hoping for city to beat Barca to give Barca a reason to hump gladbach in the next round of games and give city less desperation to beat us. Barca then win the group when we snatch a draw at city and leave us with a chance of EL fitba in the new year!

Time I woke up. I was dreaming that all the teams from 2nd to 5th in the spl dropped points this week and we widened THE GAP.

  7. Good victory at a tough venue with an enormous change in personnel from the last game, I agree with Rogers prob. The best team we’ve played domestically so far this season, can’t understand they’r league position is as it stands, but a few more performances like that and they won’t be down there for to long, but that’s the trick right? You don’t play Celtic every week a thing that must annoy every manager in the SPFL.

Goalkeeper sending off? IMO, naa, ball was going wide, not a goal scoring opportunity, awkward tackle yes, but never a dangerous one, the Dembele pull down could have been one too, but like the CG one the ref used common sense and had a good game.

The Griff (who I love) needs to stop the petulance, in time the goals will come and he should stand by his words ” I’ll take my chance to get back in the team when it comes” saw a wee bit of that bad side he has last night and I didn’t like it.

As for everyone to and other media saying it wasent a 4-0 game last night! Was Sunday’s game just a 1-0 game? Just a thought, anyway 3 points clean sheet, and congratulations to Mrs Brown on the birth of her third son, well done her.

  8. I thought when Sinclair came on he changed the dynamic of the game. Ross County couldn’t live with him in any shape or form. It curtailed their attacking threat which fizzled out late on due to tiredness. Bitton came on and kept the ball ticking over. Vfr800 I know you want to support him but last nights cameo doesn’t prove anything in terms of what he offers against what is required from a Celtic midfield player when playing in big matches.

  9. Dena – I hope yer wee lassie is ok.

Any CQNer who is in need of prayers – they’ll be said.

Brendan – Thanks for yer work on wee James and big Stuart. Yer ‘real’ trick will be to pull big Efe out the hat and play him as a front sweeper….tick, tock.

  10. When will the bells of Res:12 ring out in the foggy dew ?

When will all the stolen trophies be stripped ?

When will our river run free ?

When will WGS come out asking for the leagues to be reconstructed as the huns slide doon near the bottom of the table ?

When will Fergus McCann come out and tell us all ‘again’ that, it’ll be the worst decision since the last time the huns went out the league if, there’s no re-construction ?

When will Celtic fans safety be guaranteed for ne’erday ?

When will Brendan call out the mibbery ?

When will Efe be played in his correct position – behind Armstrong and, Broony as a front sweeper ?

Bitton is an interesting conundrum; in games like last night he can come on and calm midfield to good effect. He takes in the ball moves it away from the opposition (sometimes to a Celtic player ;)), and when the rest of the team is flagging he provides that little bit of breathing space. However, in a game where we need to be aggressive and go at the opposition Bitton can be incredibly frustrating when he is on from the start. I think there is little doubt that he does hinder us in such matches. So, he is not a man that suits Celtic’s play all of the time…but sometimes he is pretty useful.

The same summary can be applied to McGregor and Armstrong. McGregor is a bit of Marmite player (No, I don’t mean his price is fluctating) and Armstrong is slowly building back up to the player we built, but neither are suitable for every match Celtic play.

Do we continue with the horses for courses approach, or do we go out and buy the all round midfielder that can comnbine the talents of all the players above? Obviously, our choice would be the latter but that is easier said than done. Having a manager who can play horses for courses is probably more valuable than that all round midfielder.

  12. DAVIDOPOULOS on 27TH OCTOBER 2016 8:35 AM

Yeah would agree with that. I have no doubt Brendan will sign another midfielder in the next two windows. Horses for courses will work in domestic football as we are superior in other areas but in Europe we will continue to be exposed.

Agreed. European progressive will hinge around a dynamic, all action, chip-in-with-a-few-goals midfielder. You know…what we thought we were getting when we signed Gravesen!

  15. The defensive side of Roberts game is a weakness. It leaves us a little more open and exposed down the right side. There is very little chance he will make it at Man City. You need to be an exceptional player to be absolved of defensive responsibilities. It will be interesting to see how things pan out between him and Forrest. Roberts is undoubtedly the more talented player but Brendan likes Forrest for his ability to press the game and support the right back position. I think Forrest will start at the weekend.

  16. THETIMREAPER on 27th October 2016 8:14 am

So Bitton comes on and does the job he is asked to do, firming up the midfield, and that “doesn’t prove anything in terms of what he offers against what is required from a Celtic midfield player when playing in big matches”? Right enough, I don’t suppose the Astana game was a big match!

Yet Sinclair comes on and gets all the plaudits from you? The 3 subs and the change in shape altered the dynamic of the game, not just Sinclair. Without the solidity in midfield it makes it more difficult for the flair players to get the ball and make an impact.

Bitton needed a wake up call after the lacklustre performances of the last 2 games and he responded well. he did precisely what he was asked to do; so just like Sinclair and Dembele he should be applauded for making an impact as a sub. IMHO.

Breaking news: He’s called Scott Brown! :>)

Seriously though, we are just starting on the European journey with Rodgers. He is not only a good manager, he has an excellent coaching team behind him. To me, it looks like he wants to coach Armstrong and Bitton into the players he wants them to be. Bitton is being asked to play a slightly different role from Armstrong (and a different role from the one he played very well in his first season).

I see both of them improving and by the season end I think they well be approaching the finished article.

Armstrong, Bitton, Forrest and Rogic are all of a similar age and Rodgers sees them, IMHO, as being around for the next 3 to 5 years and they can progress to play the way he wants them to. Rogic and Forrest have been transformed this season. All 4 have their strengths and their weaknesses but I reckon that at Celtic they will all be coached to work on their weaknesses and become much better players.

It will be interesting to see if Rogic, Bitton and Forrest all start on Saturday. That will let us know what Brendan sees a s his strongest 11.

  18. Coming on with 20-30 minutes to go when we are defending a lead has been Bitton’s strength this season. When he starts he’s been poor. BR’s conundrum is that all players available to play in central midfield beside Brown are not the full package, they all have different strengths but also many weaknesses in their game that means the manager will constantly chop and change until he gets the midfield signing he wants (hopefully January but more likely in the summer). When he gets his man Bitton will be off.

  19. vfr800a8

Personally, I don’t care if the midfielder we would like to see is a product of buying someone in or moulding what we have. I have no axe to grind with Bitton – if he improves into the player we need I would be delighted.

I reckon Bitton would be seen as the “steady” choice against Aberdeen. Aberdeen will be desperate not to lose and midfield will probably be quite hectic. Bitton could be a calming influence. Moreover, Aberdeen give the ball away A LOT – Bitton has the positional awareness to be intercepting stray passes.

That being said, I think that Armstrong will have an important part to play on Saturday.

I’m a big fan of McGregor (always shows for the ball and gets us playing further up the pitch) but I don’t think Saturday is a game for him.

  20. Davidopoulos on 27th October 2016 9:24 am

I’m getting round to the idea that the mid-fielder we want/need probably won’t be available in January; if he’s with a team still in Europe (the level we need) or at a decent English club then I reckon they will hold on to him till the summer.

Unless of course Rodgers pulls another gem out of the bag!

Even if we are still in Europe (seeming unlikely, but we can always hope) he may push the boat and spend high out if there is a midfielder of sufficient quality who isn’t cup-tied, but again, that’s another unlikely scenario.

    We will see in January!

  21. A good three points last night against a decent Ross County team.As usual Brendan used his subs well putting pressure on the County defence in the latter half of the game.Craig Gordon has to temper his recklessness ,twice this season I reckon he could have been sent off.If last nights challange had been made by an outfield player it would have been a straight red.

Priority for next season: new keeper.

    _______________________________________________

I concur; the midfield dilemma can be resolved but both keepers, though decent, have deficiencies that will cost us. Many other areas of the field can be covered by team-mates; the goalkeeper costs goals when he makes an error!
