Safe hands

There is something curious about the England national team.  While pretty much every other country around England’s calibre select players, on merit, from clubs large and small, for decades England appear caught emperor role, seldom selecting players outside a top clutch of clubs.

This made Southampton striker Rickie Lambert’s recent selection memorable, despite the fact that his club sit comfortably above several of England’s heavyweights, significantly as a consequence of Lambert’s play.

Fraser Forster has been the best goalkeeper in Britain for a year, but he is English, and he plays domestic football for the Scottish champions, so despite his Champions League credentials, England Roy Hodgson has not capped him.

With the incumbent “England’s number 1” producing ample material to have most national team managers hide their eyes, no matter what Hodgson thinks of his preferred keeper, today’s news coverage suggests he has been boxed into a corner.  If he plays Joe Hart in Brazil, and the keeper performs to his current level, Hodgson will carry the can for being the last man in England to see the obvious.  England managers have a long record of having to deal with strong media sentiment coming to bear on their selections.

I’d like to see Fraser get the recognition he deserves.  It would also be good for Celtic to be able to offer not only Champions League football, but also the chance to gain international recognition, at an ever-higher level.  Holding onto him is another story, but all of those who were so upset when we passed on Stipe Pletikosa to take Newcastle’s third choice will not be too upset at that.

  10. Every error Joe Hart makes adds £250k to FF’s value – we all know he will go at some point. I’d like to see him play for England, but in a nice meaningless friendly; goalkeepers should be played in slowly…

He did not know much about it but will look into it. Look at some more support from the club.

Get in touch with him Bhoys.

  17. Read earlier post or posts stating that Fraser Forster should come off his line more.

I would ask, why and when?

Why? How many goals have we lost because he didn’t come off his line? And the answer has to be where doing so would definitely have prevented a goal.

When? At corners? We haven’t conceded from a corner in such a long time no one even remembers when it was.

To answer the when and why question I would offer the following. It doesn’t really matter whether a keeper comes off his line or not, as long as he is consistent AND the defenders know which it is?

A keeper who sometimes comes to collect high balls and sometimes doesn’t is much worse than one who remains on his line.

Personally I’m happy with his decision making. Allowing for the fact that no one is perfect.

  18. Big Georges Fan Club - Hail, Hail, Wee Oscar on

Wee BGFC just shouted me in to tell me there is a wee junior game on Alba.

No bad crowd for an amateur tie.

Ref seems to be giving the team in blue a lot of decisions – looks like honest enough mistakes, though. Will doubtless even themselves out in the second half.

Watched for five minutes – both teams are pish.

    Big Mike/Thindimebhoy –

You;re right – that’s the kind of thing we’re up against.

A number of years ago (2001?) I was travelling back from Glasgow to Edinburgh with a couple of colleagues in the car. Conversation got around to football and one of them, and Airdrie fan, started giving me gip about Celtic having entertained the Bertie Ahern at Celtic Park the previous weekend, stating that he thought “Celtic were meant to be anti-bigotry and anti-sectarian”. I quizzed him about what exactly was bigoted or sectarian about the Taoiseach visiting CP for a football game. His answer was, as you can imagine, illogical and incoherent. But at the root of it all was something that is widespread in Scotland – that any association with Irish, Celtic, Catholic or even just something coloured green needs to be treated with the utmost suspicion and is just plain wrong. The irony that he supports a team who have the sash stitched into their strip escaped him.

Anyway, I had to drop him off in Livingston and asked to use the facilities if he didn’t mind. I left him a wee smelly present that would have had reminded him of me for days.

  20. Evening all

Just posting to say I have just finished the Biography of Sean Fallon by Stephen Sullivan.

I must confess to having a very, very minor part in the genesis of the book but nevertheless I do think it another superb addition to my and anybody else’s Celtic library. Although I think I know a lot about the Bhoys – and the book’s subject- I found myself thinking at some point in every chapter ‘ God I never knew that’.

As I say I’m a wee bit biased but I’d recommend it wholeheartedly.
