There is something curious about the England national team.  While pretty much every other country around England’s calibre select players, on merit, from clubs large and small, for decades England appear caught emperor role, seldom selecting players outside a top clutch of clubs.

This made Southampton striker Rickie Lambert’s recent selection memorable, despite the fact that his club sit comfortably above several of England’s heavyweights, significantly as a consequence of Lambert’s play.

Fraser Forster has been the best goalkeeper in Britain for a year, but he is English, and he plays domestic football for the Scottish champions, so despite his Champions League credentials, England Roy Hodgson has not capped him.

With the incumbent “England’s number 1” producing ample material to have most national team managers hide their eyes, no matter what Hodgson thinks of his preferred keeper, today’s news coverage suggests he has been boxed into a corner.  If he plays Joe Hart in Brazil, and the keeper performs to his current level, Hodgson will carry the can for being the last man in England to see the obvious.  England managers have a long record of having to deal with strong media sentiment coming to bear on their selections.

I’d like to see Fraser get the recognition he deserves.  It would also be good for Celtic to be able to offer not only Champions League football, but also the chance to gain international recognition, at an ever-higher level.  Holding onto him is another story, but all of those who were so upset when we passed on Stipe Pletikosa to take Newcastle’s third choice will not be too upset at that.

When is Celtic TV getting its own slot on the bbc?

Does bbc alba mean the monkey Hun b*****d channel in Gaelic?

  2. The thought occurred to me that while our bring in young….develop…..give CL exposure and therefore profile to a player…and sell on for a handsome profit is fundamentally good for us at what point do we stop and try to actually win something?

There is a conflict of interest here in that although dividends of around 0.6M are paid out annually……Peter Lawell’s pay is determined to a certain extent by financial performance bonus results so the temptation is always there to punt players to boost his own earnings regardless of whether the PLC actually needs the money?

At what point or level of cash reserves do we stop looking at 1.5M projects and start to buy 4-5M real deals?

    Just saying…..

  4. The Daily Record is bad, but we know that.

However, the once respected newspaper The Glasgow Herald is arguably worse.

Some of the articles that that Tricky Dicky Wilson is spouting these days would make Dawwl Broadhoof look like a paragon of integrity.

At the end of his long-running dispute with the South African Revenue Services, all fraud charges against King were dropped, and he admitted to 41 minor breaches of the Income Tax Act. Having paid his fines, and settled his outstanding taxes, King is free to invest at home and abroad, and remains executive chairman of his Micromega investment firm.

  6. Thindimebhoy I was listening to this also. Recently I was in the boozer when this guy said he did not like the Irish bar down the road as it had an IRA banner on display. Knowing the pub I informed him in no uncertain manner that it was the flag of Ireland and that as the owner is Irish he was entitled. He could see I was not pleased and backed off! This is the kind of thing we are up against of course.

This should be a good news story about a state of the art facility designed to deliver the 21st century ticketing needs of the faithful.

regarding D King ( imminent Messiah) did anyone see the scrum at Glasgow Airport the other day?

I was expecting a swanky limo job , but there he was fighting his way past big Raman and the weasel faced Wilson who all looked as if they were in a scene from All the Presidents Men but had forgot their lines. Out he bounds to the taxi rank , the driver says “want a taxi mate ? ” I was praying he would ask the driver if he took credit cards so he would get a quick kick in the haw maws. Pantomime comes early to Glasgow.

  21. Here’s a quiz question for the older bhoys. What trophy did Celtic win in 1969 when they beat en route, Sunderland 3 0, WBA 2 1, and Hearts in the final 3 1? I’ll give you another clue, Jim Craig scored in all of those games.

  22. The Daily Record scored an own goal with

its latest story about Rangers football club.

It was obliged by the stock exchange to

alter its online headline and run amended

    copy.

The paper’s article concerned the likely

arrival at the troubled club of a former

director, Dave King, who is eager to

    become its chairman.

But he has convictions in South Africa over

tax evasion and there has been speculation

about whether the stock exchange would

permit him to take a board position.

Rangers is listed on the stock exchange’s

    Alternative Investment Market (Aim) and

    must obey its rules.

The original Record story was headlined

“Rangers boardroom battle: Dave King gets

the all-clear from the Stock Exchange to

    return to Ibrox”.

But, after an intervention from Aim, that

was changed to “Rangers power battle:

Dave King gets all clear to return to

    boardroom but needs rubber-stamp from

    Ibrox advisers.”

The paper was also required to add extra

paragraphs to its article, as follows:

    “The LSE added: ‘London Stock

    Exchange’s approach to regulation is

    aimed at maintaining the integrity,

    orderliness, transparency and good

    reputation of its markets.

With regards to the appointment of

    directors, the London Stock Exchange

Aim rules outline the need for a

company’s Nomad [to] provide advice to

the company on any changes to the

board of directors and to consider each

    director’s suitability and experience in

    relation to their (proposed) company

role recognising that the company is

admitted to a UK public market.

The nominated adviser oversees the due

diligence of this process, satisfying itself

that any material issues are dealt with

or otherwise do not affect the

    appropriateness of the company for

    Aim.”

Evidently Aim was furious about the

assertion in the original article that King

had been given the all-clear by the stock

    exchange without qualification.

Blogger Phil Mac Giolla Bhain also took

issue with a further claim in the article,

which stated: “King is believed to have met

    Paul Shackleton of Daniel Stewart

yesterday to discuss returning to Ibrox as

    chairman.”

Mac Giolla Bhain noted: “This may come as

a surprise to Mr Shackleton who is on

    holiday.”

The blogger concluded: “The questions the

editor of the Daily Record should be asking

today is: did Mr Ferguson [the article’s

writer] speak directly to Aim and directly

to Mr Shackleton’s office or did he just

    speak to a PR company?”

  23. Great news on Stokes our most important player and getting better all the time.

What will Kevtic moan about now?

On Fraser Forster I said on an English forum that they were being more than a bit dim with there stance because Celtic are the ideal club for an English international keeper.

    – In the SPL it’s all about concentration and being ready to made a vital save out of the blue similar to England encounters with Europe alsorans.

    – Then, the step up to Champions League is ideal prep for matches v the top nations that England struggle against.
