There is something curious about the England national team.  While pretty much every other country around England’s calibre select players, on merit, from clubs large and small, for decades England appear caught emperor role, seldom selecting players outside a top clutch of clubs.

This made Southampton striker Rickie Lambert’s recent selection memorable, despite the fact that his club sit comfortably above several of England’s heavyweights, significantly as a consequence of Lambert’s play.

Fraser Forster has been the best goalkeeper in Britain for a year, but he is English, and he plays domestic football for the Scottish champions, so despite his Champions League credentials, England Roy Hodgson has not capped him.

With the incumbent “England’s number 1” producing ample material to have most national team managers hide their eyes, no matter what Hodgson thinks of his preferred keeper, today’s news coverage suggests he has been boxed into a corner.  If he plays Joe Hart in Brazil, and the keeper performs to his current level, Hodgson will carry the can for being the last man in England to see the obvious.  England managers have a long record of having to deal with strong media sentiment coming to bear on their selections.

I’d like to see Fraser get the recognition he deserves.  It would also be good for Celtic to be able to offer not only Champions League football, but also the chance to gain international recognition, at an ever-higher level.  Holding onto him is another story, but all of those who were so upset when we passed on Stipe Pletikosa to take Newcastle’s third choice will not be too upset at that.

I just dont get the anti board stuff we are one of the best run clubs in the UK maybe even the best.Considering the income we receive from Scottish football is so small compared to other leagues I believe we punch above our weight. However,it is anyones right to hold a different view but in order to state there case they should lay out there ideas of how Celtic would be run if they could change things and what difference there plan would make to our success it is to easy to just say the current board are poor without saying why ? H.H.

Rumours are Easter Road and the Hibs fans in my work are quite happy with that as it makes a few quid for them.

I wouldn;t want them near my ground. If they lose it will get wrecked. They hate the colour green anyway. You never see a Zombie in green. They detest it.

  5. Callum McGregor scored again last night.

That’s 8 goals in 17 games for Notts County from midfield.

At this rate he could hit 15+ goals this season!!

Should we take him back in January (at the risk of him not playing much) or let him play out the season in League One?

I’d say give McGregor the full season playing first team football at a level that’s the equal of the majority of the SPFL Premiership. Better that than playing development squad games with us as he’d never get a sniff of the first team. Rogic & Biton don’t and as older, international signings they would be ahead of him in the queue. Re-assess in the summer.

I’d give him the full season ( unless we have an injury crisis) but take him back with the intention of playing him. I’ve seen some of his goals and he is the type of player we are missing.

  10. Kayal33,

    You are probably right.

Another option would be to try and get him a Championship club for the second half of the season (although that would be a little lousy on Notts County).

I hope Herron, George, P Twardzik, Atajic and a few others are sent out on loan for the second half of the season.

Celtic have a lot of players in around the first team that could do with games in the second half of the season (Pukki, Boerrighter, Balde, Biton, Rogic and even Forrest). Going to be hard to play all these and the young players!!

We have so many midfielders at Celtic that we have to accept they all wont make the first team on a regular basis a good few of them will have to move on to other clubs to keep there career on track. H.H.

Surely some of our youngsters deserve a chance before some of the dross we buy in.

The League Cup would have been perfect for boys like McGregor and Jackson Irvine rather than putting first team players out who clearly weren;t all that interested in beating Morton. I would be happy to go out that cup giving some youngsters a chance rather than playing 7 or 8 first team players and going out in the manner we did.

Livibhoy. I agree with you I would be happy for youngsters play in the league cup as you say they cant do much worse than the first teamers did against Morton.Neil sees all the players at Celtic Park and will know who deserves a run out in the first team and who doesnt. However, unlike you I dont think we have a lot of dross at Parkhead I think we have a good group of players all be it that they are at different stages of development. H.H.

I never said we had dross at the moment but we have bought some sub standard players in the past and our youngsters haven’t had a chance because of them.

We will never know if the boys coming through are good enough if they never get a chance in the first team.

Celtic target Partick ace Aaron Taylor-Sinclair

    by DAVID GUNN

CELTIC could be set to raid Partick Thistle in January for highly-rated full-back Aaron Taylor-Sinclair.

The Sun are reporting that the 22-year-old left-back has caught Neil Lennon’s eye after a string of impressive performances for the Jags. And with Taylor-Sinclair out of contract in the summer, Celtic could make a move in January, as Lennon seeks competition for first-choice left-back Emilio Izaguirre.

The Celtic boss failed with an audacious loan bid for Manchester United full-back Alex Buttner in the last transfer window, but it is believed the former Montrose youngster is on Lennon’s radar.

Taylor-Sinclair has made 71 appearances for the Jags, scoring twice, since his move from the Gable Endies in 2011.

Signed by current Dundee United boss and former Firhill manager Jackie McNamara, Taylor-Sinclair has been linked with both Cardiff and Middlesbrough in the past.

    • Celtic are also reportedly running the rule over Icelandic duo Holmbert Fridjonsson and Vidar Kjartansson, who have travelled to Glasgow in a bid to impress Neil Lennon following the end of the Icelandic season.

20-year-old Fridjonsson – an Iceland Under-21 striker – scored ten in 21 games for Fram last season while Kjartansson, 23, was joint top scorer in the Icelandic league, scoring 13 goals for Fylkir. There is also reported interest from Norway and Sweden in the 23-year-old.

Not sure these venues will be set in stone. I know it appears pretty definte but IF The Zombies reach the semi’s any team would be within their rights to ask for a venue switch. When Celtic reach the final any team would be within their rights to request a venue switch.

If the unthinkable happens and Celtic and the Zombies reach the final I would expect the auld coin toss to come into play.

If the SFA have any balls they will stick to their guns but they don’t and they won’t.

  26. In need of a laugh I just looked at the DAily Record on-line.

    It never lets me down.

    Todays hoot?

McCoist sees a chance for redemption for 8 early round exits in cup competitions now his new club are in their first ever final. Oh my good lord I nearly peed myself. Yep, now the Ramsdens Cup is the cure for the pain of getting pumped out of Europe, the Scottish Cup (several times) the scottish league cup (several times)……..

    Oh the desperation.

It also got me thinking about Celtic and the people I hear bemoaning the fall in standards as a reason they don’t go to CP these days. Forgive me for pointing out the obvious but between the early 80’s and the early 2000’s we were pumped out of Europe regularly in the first few rounds, we never made it past Christmas. Now we nearly expect it.

So has the standard of european football fallen or are domestic teams just that bit fitter, better organised and can actually stay in a game until the latter stages like they couldn’t before? I actually think the product is getting better. I suppose those who disagree with me will point to the lack of European progress of the also rans in the SPL. Fair point. However I think Celtic have improved tactically, collectively and in a lot of cases technically. I think we will see the same from the others in a few years now that they are following the Celtic model of sustainability and not the ‘catch me if you can’ of RFC (IL, RIP, Ha Ha Ha)
