Salmond, MacAskill, Sturgeon police state quest crushed

911

It should be a matter of great personal pride to the football fans, manty of them Celtic fans, who campaigned against the Offensive Behaviour at Football’ Bill from the outset, and then against the Act, faced off against the Scottish Government at Holyrood yesterday and won.

Their satisfaction will be shared by James Kelly MSP, who raised the Bill in Parliament, which yesterday brought down the Act.  Well done to him and his colleagues.

This nonsense was never about ending sectarianism, neither the SNP Government, nor the police, have moved an inch towards this goal since Alex Salmond first raised the subject.

Sectarianism in football grounds was given life in 2011 by then Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill, who sat through 90 minutes of The Billy Boys at Hampden, before congratulating fans on their performance.  The Billy Boys returned to stadiums that day and since then, we have lived through an SNP endorsed open season.

The Act was a familiar mix of populist rhetoric and right wing police action so common with those who put identity politics before people.

After their defeat, the Government acknowledged they would recognise will of Parliament, despite ignoring the same will when an earlier vote on the Act was passed.  Nicola Sturgeon did everything in her power to prevent this defeat.

Salmond has moved on to his spiritual home-broadcaster, where proto-right wing nationalists get to claim credentials of the left without challenge.  Today we have a government and police force which have been made accountable to the law and the democratic will.  The need for vigilance against extreme right wing policies continues.

Well done again to all those who campaigned so successfully.

    TONTINE,

I remember playing for St Eunans Clydebank against St Kessogs under 13s in the boys guild under 13 league. It was a cold and wet winter day. Probably in 1960/61.

*was that doon in Balloch or the ash park on Clyde Street, or was that OHR that played there.

  2. RON BACARDI on 17TH MARCH 2018 5:45 PM

    TONTINE,

Was 1960 I think. Dick McTaggart had recently won an Olympic medal in boxing. And had opened the sports day at St Kessogs.

*garden Fete, my mother and father worked the gate at them, gave my da an excuse tae jook intae the Balloch Hotel while my mother was in the hall with the rest of the Women’s Guild.

Big Billy, the faither, George Ryden (Dundee) and Evan Williams (Vale Juniors and then the HI HI ) were often there. The Fete Queen one year was my neighbour and she ended up marrying the goalie that saved big Frank’s penalty.

    BRTH,

Great article on Clydebank. Brings home the pitiful horror of war. One thing though: I think we need to contextualise any fear of “Scottish Nationalism” which might have motivated the UK government in its response to the disaster.

The Nationalists at this time included many fascist sympathisers like Hugh McDairmid and Arthur Donaldson, both of whom were leading figures and keen to do a deal with Hitler.

*No different from the nationalists over the Irish Sea who possibly viewed the Third Reich as “the enemy of my enemy is my friend”

*Aye and when we clinch the 7-in-a-row we’ll be the first team tae dae it twice and the only one tae dae it honestly.

  6. Happy St. Patrick’s Day to all Celts wherever you might be! What a great day it has been! Scotland beat Italy away at the rugby, the Mother Country win the Grand Slam and Sevco have their hopes dashed again. Ye cannae whack it!

Well done to Ireland. A tremendous performance at Twickers. Fairly rammed the ‘scummy Irish comment back down that clown, Jones’s throat.

Can’t wait to see the Celts tomorrow. Hopefully we can get the three points and make it a perfect weekend.

  7. I remember watching the Alexander brothers many years ago on one of those embarrassing Scottish New Years shows and they were playing a traditional Scottish song when suddenly in the middle of it they broke into Follow, Follow before continuing back to the Scottish song. The good old days when they thought they could get away with anything.

  8. BBC Scotland TV scoreboard had a ticker on hus score……..

Along the lines of….”Kilmarnock secure a rare win at Asbestosdome”

    Sack the runner..

  9. THEORIGINALSADIESBHOY, am i right in thinking larry marshall from those days, was one of the bhoys.hh.

  10. My friends in Celtic,

It is surely time we absolutely hammered the huns. April the 15th will hopefully be that time.

Beating them to win the double treble would be good, but humiliating them would be great.

    HH.

PS : I am aware that we would still have the final to win , but it would be soooooooo good to hammer them.

    HH.

*used tae be a radio show on a Saturday morning over here called “Little Breath of Scotland”, all teuchter music which isnae too bad if you have ever travelled up Loch Lomond on the Maid of the Loch or doon the watter on the Jeannie Deans and/or Waverly

If there were any “celebrities” over on tour they would be invited tae the studio for a wee blether and asked to read out the scores which had been obtained via the BBC Short Wave. Nae bother or partisanship shown until one late morning when the corries read out “Celtic 0 Aberdeen 2 and quite right tae. The following Saturday the results came straight from the Beeb, nae guests again.

Eff them and their flooer of Scotland dirge, never listened tae them again.

I am actually in the balloch hotel now. Still light tonight.

*away you and throw scheidt at the moon, that’s where I celebrated the Big Cup that Corpus Christi night.

  13. TONTINE,

OHR played on the grey gravel pitch in Clyde Street.

St Eunans played on the red ash pitch of St Columba’s school behind St Eunans church.

  14. Tontine Tim. You mentioned earlier that only Lizzie’s Anthem was played at Twickenham. The reason for that is that since Ireland’s Rugby team represents the whole 32 counties, the Irish National Anthem is only played in Dublin, but not abroad. The other song is sung. In fact, it is also sung in Dublin, but because the President is present the Soldiers’ Song is also played/and sung.

  15. anyway watching the scenes from the temple bar in dublin, the green white and gold everywhere the police, sorry the garda, singing and dancing with the crowd, could that happen in my country no .makes me think of applying for an irish passport, as both sets of great grandparents are irish what a shitehole of a country scotland is, the lodge and the kirk rule, sad state of affairs.ktf.

  16. LOL @ the Huns.

    Again.

A lot of them left well before full-time this afternoon, presumably to start their St.Paddy’s Day celebrations early…

  17. VP The Vogue, the Picture house, Harleys and the Millcroft were all closed down early. Hh

  18. G64

Thank fek we went to your hoose ….I had a nice nap on the couch after your Canadian gins :O) hh

  19. Belated St. Patrick’s Day wishes to all.

Went to Mass earlier, not knowing the score, the Irish priest , recognising my voice in confession afterwards, said, “did you hear the score today? ” I replied “I didnt”. He said “Boyd scored a late winner for Kilmarnock”. We both laughed, he said ‘May God forgive us both”.

The things you hear in confessions.

  20. Very Goooooooood Evening CQN

And hope your all enjoying St Patrick’s day today
