Scale of Euro achievement underlined

813

Last night my brother reminded me of a comment he made after the 0-0 against Benfica on match day one of the Champions League, “I hope we’re not sitting with one point after five games”.  Expectations can be as high as you like, but reality based on experience at that stage suggested Celtic would struggle to have more than a single point at this stage of the tournament.

A solitary point away from home in our Champions League history would lead the harsh realists to expect our trips to Lisbon, Barcelona and Moscow would be fruitless, leaving the enormous matter of tackling Barcelona at Celtic Park.

Two of those away games resulted in defeat, and we were behind in Moscow before one of the most significant fight-backs in modern Celtic history.  It’s difficult to find perspective for the win over Barcelona.  Suffice to say, they won 0-2 in Lisbon and 0-3 in Moscow.  Celtic’s 2-1 remains the most astonishing result of this season’s Champions League.

Manchester City’s failure to qualify for the knock out stage, with their seemingly limitless budget, tells the story of how difficult this tournament is.  England’s other mega-wealthy club, reigning European champions Chelsea, sacked their manager this week as the expectation they are likely to be eliminated at this stage dawned.

Beating Spartak and qualifying for the knockout stage will be suitable reward for a remarkable team.

The very first CQN Annual is NOW in stock and shipping order yours here! P.S. it’s great.

In case you missed the story, check out the Celtic Trust’s ‘Stand up for the Green Brigade‘ call on the 12th minute on Saturday. Full details on the Trust’s site.

If it helps further the initial loan period was 10 years from these sub-trusts, with the expectation that it could be extended, with the repayment ultimately coming from the employee’s estate once deceased.

  2. The hun-loan……I like that.

Is it reserved for thems and zombies.

And if a hun was stupid enough to lend me money, well…..repayment would just not happen.

Much like their recent accounting practices.

‘I have to admit to being a little disappointed that all the self appointed tax and accountancy experts got the FTT decision so wildly wrong’

In the fullness of time it may turn out that it was messrs Mure and Rae who got it wrong.

  4. Evening folks.

What a wonderful gesture at the Liverpool V Young Boys match. The away supporters unfurling a banner in support of the 96. Class.

As for the experts getting it wrong I believe the RTC blogger always said the EBTs would be taken individually, they would win some, loose some, they won more than he thought they would, on a split decision, which may well be appealed and lost at an UTT.

I am very open to correction here, but didn’t they admit to incorrectly administering more than 30 EBTs? Owing an unknown, as yet, amount of tax.

They still stand accused, and according to the FTT guilty, of issuing and not disclosing to the football authorities, side contracts.

    Hardly a victory for them.

  6. If the trust is a seperate entity from deadco.

If the loans were paid from the trust.

Does that mean that players were paid from a third party?

Oh dear wot a tangled web.

  7. We all know they cheated for years, regardless of the technical details outlined in the FTT. They did evade tax, they were guilty, the size of their evasion has been reduced, all be it substantially.Still, millions were denied the public purse.

I’m not expecting the SPL to strip Rangers of trophies, they’re too afraid of the mob and Murray has too many friends.

They’re still dead though. The Rangers can claim as many titles as they want, they didn’t win them. The club that did is dead. It will remain dead no matter what transpires over the next few months. I’m happy.

  8. They went into administration. They’ve entered liquidation. A tribute act is bouncybouncing about somewhere.

Their shenanigans were too much even for their ludge brothers to save them.

So there they are. Look at them. Shabby clowns, ranting away.

  9. canamalar

    “gratuitious alienation”

That best describes the Board’s attitude towards the Green Brigade, right? Right?

  10. So an ebt is not actually a loan, its like a loan but its different?

The irony is the t in ebt isn’t it?

At the end if the day ebt or loan they’re still deid.

  11. Doc

I’m in no doubt that the haven’t won anything …they’re insolvent ..IMO the remainder is irrelevant

Save for the dual contracts issue …of course if you consider the MSM and leaving CFC men like Pat Bonner …such action shouldn’t be taken

  12. Che,

Deed is deed, no resuscitation possible, no even Vinny Jones style!

    newradbhoy

Yet another angle for the SPL enquiry to deflect and obfuscate on!

Or am I being too cynical.

  13. newradbhoy

    20:37 on 22 November, 2012

The argument is that they received loans, not payments, and therefore there’s no breach of SFA rules.

Apart from the ones that the huns admitted were payments.

The FTT decision is not binding on Nimmo Smith, who in judicial terms is much further up the food chain than Mure, Rae and Poon.

  14. Reading back and catching up the FTT result. Seems that the 2 gentleman found a copper bottom ‘legal’ get of out jail card for them. The lady QC looked at all evidence and applied herself to using the law to address the behaviour which was prsented on evidence.

The. 2 gentleman will get their opinion trousered when the Appeal moves out of Scotland.

How can the SPL not consider that the EBTs did not constitute a salary, when it was used to calculate the amount of insurance money payout when a player got injured , eg S Klos

How will the Scottish judiciary wriggle out of that?

I am sure that there will be some contradictory definitions and clauses in the SPL rules which will involve the judges ‘exercising their large legal brains’. The outcome of which iWork be there is a lack of clarity on definitions and to their meaning in relation to punishments.

So I am now expecting that , another legal rabitt will be pulled out the hat to save their titles.

Still things going well on the field, looking forward to Saturdays game, 3 points and we can start to pull away.

    Celtic mac,

How did you find out ?

Without access to the interweb, how would you propose a co-ordinated response ?

I relay don’t expect an answer, ad you have not answered a single question I ha ve asked you, you have ignored every question in fact and continue to come back with more questions, eventually I will not have an answer and you will feel justified for ignoring everything I’ve said.

So the long and short is, if you don’t want to support their action don’t, no one is forcing you, but stop bleating about a section of the support who have decided they want to make a statement through action, they still have that right, they are under no obligation to turn up every week and provide an atmosphere for your entertainment, telling them and everybody else otherwise is just stupid Hun talk.

My suggestion to you is, on the 12 minute mark stay in your seat and protest against the support who have sympathy for the GB action. Then everybody is happy.

  16. Anyone wanting to understand the logic of judicial interpretation of tax avoidance schemes would be advised to read Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

Fair point, the other aspects are, from a football point of view window dressing.

The dual contracts are the issue, and Newradbhoy just raised another point, the Trust, is it a third party paying players, therefore those payment were illegal regardless of the dual contract situation.

The more you look the more you find.

    Can I Have Rasberry

We are talking about boycotting Celtic Football Club!

I cannot be the only one on here who finds that incongruous.

Sorry been putting the babes to bed. I would never boycott our great club, however the club either backs the supporters or not.

There may be a simpler explanation, the lady legal may understand the law, but she clearly does not understand what was to be expected of her as regards Scottish football….

    Celtic mac,

After reading you last post, I might have been a bit short with you there, hope you notice I’m getting better at being short :o)

Although I’m still no 100% if your las post (gratuitous alienation) was meant the way I took it, I agree with it.

    Heil hail.

  22. Was the EBT scheme open to all employees of the former club?

Did those in the lower wage bracket the cleaning staff ,security, administration etc apply for/receive loans?

  23. Mr Grey who is a solictor who lectures in sports/football law in Scotland at a university level and was the agent for Mr Violet, Mr Purple and Mr Cardiff reckoned that because the sums issued by the trust funds were loans not payments the arrangements didn’t have to be disclosed to the SFA.

Does anyone have any idea what Mr Grey’s name is in the real world?
