Scale of Euro achievement underlined

813

Last night my brother reminded me of a comment he made after the 0-0 against Benfica on match day one of the Champions League, “I hope we’re not sitting with one point after five games”.  Expectations can be as high as you like, but reality based on experience at that stage suggested Celtic would struggle to have more than a single point at this stage of the tournament.

A solitary point away from home in our Champions League history would lead the harsh realists to expect our trips to Lisbon, Barcelona and Moscow would be fruitless, leaving the enormous matter of tackling Barcelona at Celtic Park.

Two of those away games resulted in defeat, and we were behind in Moscow before one of the most significant fight-backs in modern Celtic history.  It’s difficult to find perspective for the win over Barcelona.  Suffice to say, they won 0-2 in Lisbon and 0-3 in Moscow.  Celtic’s 2-1 remains the most astonishing result of this season’s Champions League.

Manchester City’s failure to qualify for the knock out stage, with their seemingly limitless budget, tells the story of how difficult this tournament is.  England’s other mega-wealthy club, reigning European champions Chelsea, sacked their manager this week as the expectation they are likely to be eliminated at this stage dawned.

Beating Spartak and qualifying for the knockout stage will be suitable reward for a remarkable team.

The very first CQN Annual is NOW in stock and shipping order yours here! P.S. it’s great.

  1. The huns cheated.

    They admitted they cheated.

The FTT tribunal found they hadn’t cheated to the extent that was alleged.

    But they had cheated.

”75. The Appellants have declared by way of a letter dated 29 September 2011 that five players: Mr Selby, Mr Inverness, Mr Doncaster, Mr Barrow, and Mr Furness had their guaranteed bonuses paid to them via the trust mechanism. This was in respect of a guarantee that the players would receive a certain amount each year in squad bonuses under the terms of their written contracts.”

    Anyone need a wee laugh?

I was listening to Off The Ball on the iPlayer. Spiers was on and they were talking about the MSM not asking any hard questions to the great Walter when they got humped 4-1 at home to Unirea Urzicen (Jabba’s computer “broke down” so he couldn’t attend the press conference).

Anyway, without realising what he was saying Spiers came out with “that club no longer exists anymore” followed by much laughter and Cosgrove asking him which one.

It’s about 37 minutes in if anybody wants a listen.

    Ernie,

Billy Dodds said in print and on the radio that his EBT was to pay his contract up when he left the club. How can this be deemed to be anything other than a contractual payment?

Our Fascist Faction apparently think this might be a good time to pollute CQN with their FILTH.

Normally, when I ask the Mynah Bird to explain some of the things that he has posted on Paul’s blessed site, he gives us the… Good Night, Walter Mitty line.

Maybe tonight he would like to explain some of those inhuman posts.

I am not in any particular hurry.

The following season, prior to their CL campaign,Smith said thay had to improveon the previous year’s home form, where they lost 4-1 twice.

He added that he didnae count Unirea as they only scored wi three breakaways and an offside!

No-one in the press conference dared say a word.

    Or laugh,come to that……..

It was confirmed in the Polish media that Celtic Glasgow scouts were at the game Polonia Warsaw: Gornik Zabrze (last Saturday).

Celtic scouts and scouts of other clubs were watching striker Milik and winger Wszolek. Both are young tallents. Both are not bad, good materials for good mature players.

I told couple of weeks back that Poland is interesting market this year.

Also, there were a number of assessments rfcplc(il) did not even appeal. Add the concession by Thornhill to the unappealed assessments, and the wee tax case, and you have plenty of meat for the SPL commission to chew on. Moreover, the btc might be appealed, and as things stand is not even binding on future first tier tribunals. The dissenting opinion is excoriating, and is conclusive of ebts being used for contractual payments without disclosure to the SPL. The more you scratch away at the surface the more convinced I am that they are still on the hook for the SPL charges.

I reckon that campaign must be the worst by any team in a CL campaign. They took two points from their six games. I’m sure there’s been a few instances of teams getting 0 or 1 point, but the key point is that they were a Pot 2 team that year!

I believe Walter’s overall record is 6 wins in CL group games in 11 years as Rangers manager. WGS managed 7 wins in his 4 years at Celtic.

So the EBT’S that they admitted guilt will be added add and for penalty

All the other EBT’S they did not admit guilt to, two members of the FTT who are apparently beyond reproach could not find any guilt legally with those EBT’S

If only they hadn’t admitted their guilt

Is there any further legal action which now can be taken? as from now on i’m sure the mistake of admitting guilt wont be repeated

    Celtic mac,

Come on, how do you propose they let the wider support know ?

Keep in mind when they tried to sell their fanzine the police arrested then and confiscated the material.

Hand out flyers ? Do you think the same police who obstructed them distributing their fanzine will let them distribute a plea for help, don’t be so naive.

So what do you propose they do to publicise their plight ?

The treatment they have suffered at the hands of Celtic’s own security and lack of response from the official complaints process gives them no alternatives IMO.

The best way to publicise the harassment is to raise the question in the heads of the support during a game.

What’s happened to the Green Brigade ?

Everyone who does not know about the treatment will ask that at the next game and if not the following game, one game missing can easily be spun by whatever authorities want this killed, two games will show any spin for what it is.

The GB have asked only those with sympathy for their plight within section 111, everyone else they have asked to stand up 12minutes into the game and sing your support.

STAND UP FOR THE GREEN BRIGADE

That is all they ask, they are not trying to cause financial hardship to the club, that to me is very clear from this strategy.

Trying to use moral blackmail that they should just turn up and entertain everyone, think themselves lucky they are allowed to and be good little serfs is an insult to them and every Celtic supporter who values their liberty.

  17. Got back from Lisbon last night. Brilliant experience, but disappointed with the way we lined out/played.

Was certain Tony Watt would get the nod over Gary Hooper, who is not match fit.

    Anyway;

On the Monday night before the game, we were having a few beers in a bar just beside the Rossio Metro station. It had become a defacto Celtic bar for the few days.

Thing is, I found a wedding ring on the floor.

I am fairly certain it belongs to a Celtic fan, (judging by its size, a female,) as the place was packed with them !

Six wins in eleven years is pretty poor by any standards.

I wonder why more hasn’t been made of this shocking statistic?

Having said that, two points from six games is what you might expect from the above statistic…..

  19. Evening all. I think I take the most satisfaction from the “sports press” saying they are deid. If confirmation were needed, in their haste to clear SDM, they have provided it. Lovely stuff.

  20. The green brigade are not denying Celtic money by not attending if they have already bought and paid for their season ticket..

Arkadiusz Milik is very similar to Robert Lewandowski from Borussia Durtmund.

Borussia paid 4 million euros to Lech Poznan two years back. Milik is only 18 years old.

Lewandowski scored two goals against Ajax yesterday.

Another two very interesting players are very young two midfielders from Legia Warsaw: Damian Lukasik and Dominik Furman.

I hope the scouts watched our win 3:1 in Poznan against Lech. On the other hand I would love those two midfielders playing for my Legia in many next years.
