Scales and the Great Left Back Consistency since 2010

150

18 months from the end of his contract, it’s good to read Brendan Rodgers talk about securing Liam Scales on a long-term deal.  The player is unrecognisable from the man who struggled against St Johnstone in August and is a testament to what happens when you develop a player properly.

Successive Aberdeen managers, Jim Goodwin and Barry Robson saw his potential, as did the Celtic scouts who recruited him from Shamrock Rovers in 2021 for little more than £500k.  However, his career upwards trajectory could have been lost were it not for Celtic’s central defensive injury crisis at the start of the season.

Carter-Vickers, Lagerbielke, Nawrocki, Phillips and Welsh were all unavailable at various stages during the first half of the season, leaving Liam as the permanent feature Celtic built their central defence on.

One of the main reasons I’m keen we retain Liam’s services for years to come is his preferred foot and second position.  As a left footer, he gives a more natural balance to central defence than is possible with two right footers.  He can also play left back, a position pretty much every club in the world struggles to recruit for.

Lefties are 10% of the population and are considered a mandatory requirement to play at left back, even more so than having a engine to get up and down the field or an ability to cross.

Celtic have had remarkable consistency at left back since 2010.  Emilio Izaguirre, then Kieran Tierney, then Greg Taylor made the position their own.  Taylor has seen off a few competitors for the spot and is approaching his peak years.  I’d like to see if Liam can be an option there, in the event we need one.

  1. When Beckenbauer signed for New York Cosmos there was obviously a great interest in his first game.

After 20 mins NYC were down 2-0.

The Cosmos were owned by a Texan dude who wore the cowboy boots and cowboy hat.

After it went 2-0 he spoke to the manager on walkie-talkie from the directors box and said

” We don’t pay a million bucks for ‘ deefence’….get the Kraut up front”

What have i done wrong in my life to deserve CAPTAIN OBVIOUS doing football commentary.

Wee Boca 18 year old LB will be a star. My boys watch Boca all the time and have been raving about him for a year “Boca’s KT”

ps has pleasure of going to a BOCA home game last year with my bhoys what an experience.

  4. Franz Beckenbauer re-defined the role of central defender in football. Would love to hear the thoughts of George Connelly on his loss, though it was Scotland’s loss that George did not play in the 1974 World Cup finals, through injury. Forever grateful for his performance in the ECWC final in 1967, WC quarters Mexico 1970, Wembley in green and white alongside Netzer in April 1972, his part in the demolition in the replay aginstainst Athletico in May 1974, and again against the Netherlands in the WC Cup Final in July 1974. Do not think he ever played at Celtic Park though he was there when Bayern Munich celebrated a draw against Martin O’Neill’s great Celtic side in the CL twenty years or so ago and was effusive in his praise of Celtic’s performance. Did play at Hamden against Scotland in 1969, though Bobby Murdoch was the best player on the park that night, and again at the same ground in the EC Final in 1976. In short one of the greatest players ever to take up the game, and Captaining a great club and National team, and one of the few to whom ‘esque’ was a fitting addition to his name.

Funny how almost every player we’re linked with , the huns are after him as well . What that really means is media are hoping they sign said player so that they can print ‘Rangers* snatch (insert player name) from under Celtic’s noses’ headlines . Meanwhile , we were never even looking at said player .

Anyhow , any player the huns are chasing is not good enough for Celtic, that’s official -)) . (Butland ,slight exception).

  7. Missing from the list is, if transfer fee is to be believed, the best full back to wear the hoops since Danny McGrain.

Strong rumours are that previous “development success,” the diminutive Jeremie Frimpong will be snapped up by Arsenal who will trigger his release clause with a €40m offer, taking the total received for Celtic from transfers to amounts approaching £15m

At the same time Arsenal have decided our record sale KT isn’t good enough any more, even with a crisis in his position.

  8. You’re suggesting a Charlie Mulgrew type role for Scales in the squad/team

If we can get performances like Chaz gave during his POTS season I think most of us would be happy

  9. Scales doesn’t have Mulgrews wand of a left foot or his composure.

    I like LS at CH.

Not sure that he is a full back .

I went off Mulgrew when Ronny was the manager.

No surprise when he wasn’t offered a new contract when Brendan arrived.

  15. Think it’s about time Brendan Rogers and the club stop telling us that one minute we would like to add /2 or 3 Quality players in this month ,then he Rogers comes out and says it could be the in the summer before any transfers are done,if any ,Then McKay comes out after the AGM ,exciting news Celtic are upgrading Barrowfield to the tune of£20 million supposedly Last December,?

  16. Voguepunter …absolutely that sleekit diving bigot who got big Roy sent off for feck all..and claimed his League cup final hatrick ( 2 of which were penalties of course !) ..bet more than 50 % of his goals for them would have been penalties !..same as it has ever been ..Anyway I think there are parallels in style with big VVD and the kaiser …RIP Franz …a proper legend ⭐️
