Scant compensation in Lisbon

369

Is it any compensation that POAK, who finished second to AEK last season, drew 1-1 against Benfica in Lisbon, in the Champions League playoff first leg last night?  Not really, but it is a marker of the standard required to beat the Greek champions.  POAK eliminated Basel 5-1 on aggregate two rounds ago.  Greece are likely to have two teams in the group stage.

What might have been is irrelevant, it is more important to perform to the level required in Lithuania tomorrow evening.  Celtic are far stronger than Suduva, but you and I have seen what happens when a Celtic team let standards drop away in Europe, even for a short period of a game.

  1. PARK ROAD 67,

I was in The Adelante last year. I have to agree with DILLIGAF. Tony is very welcoming. It’s a smallish pub but a good atmosphere for the games. Bobby Lennox’s son, Gary told me about it and I had a good conversation with him about The Lions and other Celtic stories.

  4. Why would Hearts sell their top scorer to a rival club? Have they no ambition of winning the league? Or is it Operation Stop the Tims? Budge,Milne and Petrie………………I wonder who they would want to win the title……….Laffatme fee was prob 350-400k,how much would they charge us,if we wanted him (i know…i know….) ?

Chairboy, good post earlier and I wish I had the time to properly respond .

However I would point out you say the PLC wish to make money yet this blog has consistently told us we break even over a period of time ? Hmm.

Gie Arthurs bar a miss too. I went in once but the guys a big Man City fan. I asked him to put the Celtic game on and he duly obilged but said there would be no sound as Citeh were playing the same time. Fair enough. Till I looked up the place was full of Citeh/Sevco scarves an flags.

  8. you would think someone would be asking as they in a previous life have had form would you not?

I was at the Rotherham v Hull game last night. Ex Celtic player was the best player on the park. Jackson Irvine. I don’t get to Celtic Park often these days , watch all their games on Celtic T v. Irvine can tackle, it seems to me that other than Brown nobody in the team can win the ball from the opposition, That includes Rogic and McGregor, We need a couple of players who are prepared “to put their foot in” as well as a strong centre half.

I get to most Sheffield United home games. The best player every week at Bramall Lane is FLECK, I know he is ex Rangers but he is a very good player and he would be an improvement,in my opinion on what we have.

  10. Whoever is behind the Scott McKenna bid should either walk to stop having any control over signings.

Bang average even at £1.5-2m never mind £3.5m+ it reeks of two things:

We’ve not prepared, there’s no other centre backs in the pipeline, or all other avenues have been closed off. Failure to prepare.

Or we’ve put in a bid knowing it will be rejected in the hope of saying look we tried to bid for players but clubs were wanting far too much. A deliberate attempt to pull the wool over supporters eyes.

  11. DD,

I agree. He still is not the Anti Christ in everything thats going on.Far too many to blame for the state we are in.Too many people jumping on the PL wagon for my liking.I am not a sheep,I dont follow the party line.I like to look at things, and make my own decision. To me,Brendan and the scouting team are as much to blame for where we are defensivelyas PL.

In case anyone thimks I am a PL fan.Nothing could be further from the truth. He has acted abysmally regards the scum, never to be forgiven,by me anyway, but in running the club, financially,we could not get better. If anyone thinks the CL exit was good for PL,and the Board, they are the ones on drugs.

  12. This summer transfer window will close, with the biggest sense of underwhelment

    If that’s even a word.

  13. Malone Bhoy,

Just who do you think is behind the Mc Kenna deal.FFS,its not rocket science.Congerton has come to Brendan,he has then gone to PL.Thats it.You know who is behind it,just afraid to say it..

  14. MALONE BHOY on 22ND AUGUST 2018 5:18 PM

So since the manager has the final say on transfers he should walk?

  15. We still have time to sort out the shambles.

We need 1 CH and 1RB pronto ; Brendan has knowledge of the transfer market in different ways ; I don’t believe he relies on Lee Congerton alone. Through his contacts he is aware of potential players for Celtic which would come in just below the EPL threshold. The Sporting Lisbon right back would have been one.

Fix the mess ASAP before we throw away 8IAR ; the post Mortem can be held by end of 18 when we are in a better position. Then we have 6 months to plan the replacement of Lawwell and set ourselves up for CL success ( qualification).

John Fleck is a childhood friend of my daughter. Both are Celtic supporters. JF is from a very Tim family on his mother’s side. Great to see them both doing well in Yorkshire.

Will we look back on the Willo Flood window and think……

“ah , those were the days……”

  20. If BR is the driver behind the Scott McKenna bid (which I really hope he’s not) then I think we need to look at a more European system of team/squad building. I believe BR to be amongst the top coaches, man managers and a pretty decent tactician but there are question marks over his recruitment.

I don’t know how the recruitment runs at Celtic but if its someone else then they’re not doing their job. Discovering the next VVD is equivalent to discovering the next Larsson (possibly even more difficult), but that should be the aim.

I’d rather we were taking educated punts on unknowns from further afield than journeymen close to home.

I don’t see a lot of inventiveness in our recruitment recently or those we’re linked with. It’s English loans and players close to home. Where is the worldwide scouting network?

  21. Not posted in a wee while. However, punters talking about the Adelante bar in Puerto del Carmen in Lanzatimotte has done the trick. Smashing Tim bar showing every game complete with some choons. Tony and Mrs Tony are fine hosts and run a fine wee establishment. Even my missus and 2 daughters in their twenties loved it. Slightly off the beaten track just behind the strip but worth tracking down.

Apparently I had a great time in there last month!

Those who were stiffed financially cared , and some of those stiffed in sporting terms cared.

The custodians of Scottish fitba certainly didn’t care as long as the scum didn’t disappear.

Your post aboot mushy season brought the memories flooding back. Picking them on the golf course in Dundee. Brewing them up… Then sneaking into Tannadice to see the Celts on Wednesday night circa 1982. What a crazy night it was. Ah memories

The manager has the final say on signing a player but has no say in the financial negotiations. So if for example we have Arzani on a plate Rodgers can then say yes or no.

Rodgers has no control over the financial package length of contract terms etc negotiated. Therefore if this doesn’t go well he has no control in getting his targets over the line if the guy that does do it isn’t invested in it/ doesn’t try to hard or believes that target number 3 is better value… or he has someone offered by an agent that isn’t on the list.

  25. We can laugh at Lafferty all want. But in the last 2 games at tynecastle he’s been the one smiling.

Bullied our defenders, scored two great shots, fouled with impunity. The latter will only increase now he’s traded Maroon for orange. What will WE do to prevent the first and second from recurring?
