Scott Brown, Great Scottish Runner

875

You seldom hear football people speak as unguardedly as Peter Grant did to The Herald yesterday about Scott Brown.  “If somebody had offered us £4m (in 2010)?  I would have driven him down the road myself”.  The tone of Peter’s piece was supportive, though.  Our former assistant manager affirms Scott is a vastly improved performer since.  I agree.

You never really know what is going on inside a squad.  Footballers play with injuries, many find the distractions of wealth all-consuming and some are simply deployed incorrectly.  At the #19 game last week I recalled the form of Stiliyan Petrov under John Barnes, he was lost, especially when playing right back.  Bobby Petta also looked out of sorts under Barnes but within weeks of playing for Martin O’Neill both were among the most valuable assets at the club.

Neil Lennon told us last week that Scott Brown was unfit during last season’s Champions League campaign.  It’s clear that he is an incredibly more effective player when fit, but Peter Grant suggests Brown has also learned positional discipline, a subject he has previously been criticised here for.

A lot of Scott’s contribution is off the ball.  He closes space, filling the park with a presence, which is defensively important, especially on Champions League duty.  I’ve never seen Celtic’s yardage stats on players but you have to think he’ll top the list most weeks, he is the Great Scottish Runner, but all that energy needed to be harnessed correctly, which is perhaps what Scott is learning from former midfielder, Neil Lennon.

The next achievement to look out for from Scott is a marquee performance on a European stage………

Which leads us onto the Great Scottish Run.  You can still sign up for the run, and if you’ve registered already, or are still to register, you can participate in the 1254125 campaign.

The heart and soul of our community is something we cannot take for granted.  It has flourished because you, and countless thousands before you, have decided to improve the lives of those around you by getting involved in the name of Celtic.

On Sunday 6 October there is a 10k and Half Marathon.  If that is beyond you. There are family events taking place the day before.

The first thing you need to do is sign up for the Great Scottish Run, or here for one of the family events.

Once you’ve done that, you can register for the 1254125 campaign here.

Then you can create a donations page here.  Click Start Fundraising, search for Celtic Charity, setup your My Donate account).

Beyond Anton Moravcik and Venglos playing together at Bratislava, something somewhere tells me that Venglos or Moravcik was due to play at Celtic Park in the 60′s but didn’t due to injury.

1964 ECWC – Celtic won both legs 1-0.

Venglos was dropped for Horvath at CP and played in both legs – Moravcik didn’t feature at CP but played in the return leg in Bratislava.

Your recollection might have been distracted (by your love of boxing) – Clay defeated Liston in Miami the night before the CP game. :-)

I tend to agree with that. I fancy Commons and 3-2 Hoops tho at 600/1.

    That’ll do nicely!

  3. Just in to say…

I think that the Cellic will emerge from the San Siro tonight with their heads held highand pride intact.

I’ve no had the chance to read back but, I believe there’s no Ledley or Forrest ?

    If that’s the case ?

I can see aprk the bus job.

I do hope that Neil disny try to be gallus and go with three strikers like he did with Juve @ CP last season and we got our erchies kicked for being so cheeky.imo

I still cannot hear the CL theme from that tune…..tone deaf maybe???

  5. As I am sure my fellow CQN couponeers will testify, I am the man to put the kibosh on Milan tonight. All I have to do is put a bet on Milan to win and game over. Unfortunately, I never have/never will bet against the Bhoys.

    Till later, off oot

    Hail! Hail! PMTYH

  6. If Ledley does indeed miss out, that’s a real shame. He’s a good player for games like tonight. The amount of work he got through in the Barca game, without even touching the ball, was staggering.

  7. CultsBhoy loves being 1st forever & ever on

I’m a long time ‘non admirerer’ of Scott Brown in a Celtic shirt, far less wearing the arm band.. I concede however he has got better of late and if he can traslate his international form to tonight’s game then he may have me reconsidering my assessment.

I’ve alwys felt Scott would be very good in another team as I’ve said before, Arsenal would be perfect fit – not because he has that level of talent but because he would compliment their truly brilliant football. Scott needs to win the ball and release it to better players.

Tonight, hopefully Celtic play like Arsenal and Scott compliments. I’d love to see him light up the stage with a terrier ball winning performance and releasing team mates to do damage. Stick at what he does well- expecting him to do more is often when it goes wrong for him IMO.

  8. Tommytwiststommyturns,

When I was a wean,I used to stay at Govan cross. At that time apart from Celtic my head was full of Topical Times football annuals. All the great players. When the huns had a big European tie,I used to go up,lifted over, straight down to the front to see these guys close up.Never really registered at the time, but I saw them get some royal humpings back then.Eintracht,6-0 up from the 1st leg.The huns scored 3,then Eintracht woke up and ran out 6-3 winners.12-3 agg.Spurs another,5-2 at Ibrox, and 3 something at home, probably 8-3 agg.Real Madrid,Puskas scored at Ibrox,1-0,then Real humped them 6-0 in Spain

My only big night at Celtic Park was Celtic v Real Madrid,in a friendly. The Blue and White???,trophy.I got Puskas and Gentos autograph,Real won 3-1,and Celtic were forced back out to do a lap of honor.5 or 6 years later,I was in Lisbon.

  9. I think Jabba is a bawabg BUT

I remember going to game just after LUBO signed on way in on Radio the pundits were

giving it ho ho Celtic pay 300,000 for a 33 year old whilst mighty gers have splashed out

£4 million and 30,000 grand a week on Braveheart.

The only one that knew anything about Lubo was Jabba who said he had loved watching

French football and Lubo was every year in running for player of the year with Zinadine.

He was class only question was could he still hack it at 33.

The rest guffaw guffaw Traynor you diddy he was obviously not playing against the likes

    of Colin Hendry every week.

    Yes , a lot of Serie A . 14 years worth .

    I’m really dissonant about tonight . .

PSV [at home ] apart , they have been dire [ by their standards ] They were awful v Verona , defense was sieve like and was taken apart by the movement of the aging Toni . Balotelli had one of his couldn’t hit a barn door games [ he repeated that for Italy v the Czechs ] Torino ran through them , they were a shambles . They were lucky to get a draw.

My worry is that they might find form !

  12. Livi bhoy

Yup and not so many 4-0 and 4-1 defeats at home in the group stages since a certain club died :-)

    You’re welcome!

Think the Herald(?) ran a feature on the Bratislava players staying up till the early hours of the morning at their hotel to watch the Clay v Liston fight.

  20. Marti Sandino @ 12 01.

I am no expert . I simply watch a lot of Italian football ..

I thought Juve would give Celtic a doing [ at Celtic Park in particular ] I am much more positive about tonight. I think Celtic should go for it . Verona weren’t frightened of them , Torino weren’t frightened of them . They attacked . .Attack them down the wings , play Samaras to run at them and play Pukki from the start .. Their likely fullbacks are better at attacking than they are at defending. They are particularly vulnerable against players who run at them . Mexes is currently a bomb scare , prone to ball watching and giving the ball away . Muntari likewise .

Quantum physics —-no problem . ! I earned my crust from Mathematical Physics

  21. I was talking to a hun / sevconian at work and he was saying that – it’ll no be long until ‘Rangers’ are back in the same league as Cellic again.

I pointed oot that the ‘Rangers’ that he watches today are a tribute-act or, zombies cause they died when they were liquidated.

But the hun / sevconian thinks – nah, that’s rubbish. Awe that changed was the wording on a document, in his opinion ?

He say’s – ‘Rangers’ – still play in the same colors – same stadium – sing the same songs etc….and that he canny wait to get back wur they belong !!!

He also pointed out that in effect – ‘Rangers’ have been dun oot of £45mill(3 years CL money)since they went oot the league.

I said – “Was that no a clever move ? lose £45 mill CL money and avoid £140 mill tax money etc…?”

He said – “Nah. We’ve already been proven Not Guilty”

Where the feck are we with all this ?

And – furthermore – With the greatest respect to the Gallant / Bold / Uppitty Tim Canamalar and others…you are trying to be as dignified as it’s possible to be with the ‘bored’ re: yer proposal etc -Your to be commended.

But, I think that the rather old-fashioned approach would have been better…

    propose to the ‘bored’…..

We(Celtic fans) will with-hold ALL SB money from the start of next season until – you – the ‘bored’ get into the ring with the SFA and get the answers we(Celtic fans) deserve.

I know that I’ve a cheek for proposing that above as I can no longer afford my SB and had to give it to my bro :(

But, all kidding aside there a two prevailing forces here…..

    Apathy v’s Anarchy ?

    Who’ll win ?
