Scott, Dedryck, your part in a very long story

467

There was a bit of chat last week that Celtic were ‘at it’ by signing Scott Allan. Sticking it large to an aspiring Championship club. Tempting, though it is to let that notion roll, it’s simply not true. Scott was right on plan to be a Celtic signing, and as I’m sure he’ll explain at this afternoon’s press conference, Celtic is the perfect move for him.

He is a young Scottish player with talent and enough potential to become a top player. Like them all, he is a financial risk, but not a major risk, neither his transfer fee nor his wages will significantly alter the budget.

The need for reinforcements for other positions is more pressing. Midfield is not an area where we are short, but signing Scott will have no impact on the search to reinforce those other positions. He will immediately enhance the squad and force everyone else to up their game.  If you want a place in that Celtic midfield, you will need to be on the absolute top of your game.

I expect to see more deals like this. If there’s a player who the coaches reckon has potential, and he looks undervalued, Celtic will try to sign him.  We want the best players in Scotland at every age group and in every position.  We want to develop a culture of self-improvement.  This signing will ask questions not just of Scott, but there isn’t a midfield player at the club who will not consider the threat to his position this morning.

For the best part of an hour Celtic were a joy on Saturday.  Having read so much about what the player went through in recent months, he must have been pinching himself as he watched fast-flowing, incisive, football.  They were a team full of swagger and confidence.

Ronny Deila would have been animated at what happened after he made the decision to rest some legs.  Two goals were lost as a result of Dedryck Boyata twice losing concentration.  This was an alarming sign but Ronny knows Dedryck has played very little football, less than two dozen games before joining Celtic this summer.

How to deal with mistakes is one of the attributes which comes form experience, a qualify which makes it less likely your nerve will be affected, resulting in the second mistake.  I expect the big man to be back at his Qarabag form for Wednesday’s Cup Final.

Jane Maguire from the Celtic FC Foundation was in touch after receiving a £1,200, from money raised at last month’s CQN Golf Open:

“I just wanted to thank CQN so much for the wonderful donation of £1,200, as a result of your Golf Day. The spirit and compassion of the Celtic Family is unique and unsurpassed and your gesture is a perfect example of that.

“Your support is invaluable to Celtic FC Foundation as we strive to honour the founding principles of our Football Club and help those who need it most. We deliver a host of projects in our local communities for children, young people and adults around the four key themes of Health, Equality, Learning and Poverty. The CQN input will make a huge difference.”

I know we talk about the bigger aspects of the club, like this, often, but it’s incredible how deep the links the modern Celtic support have with the founding ethos of the club. It’s no idle boast to suggest we are the world’s most ethical football club.

The trajectory is also impressive. Links from practically every area of the support, and the club itself, to the Foundation, and to individual projects, like our own Mary’s Meals appeals, are more frequent and increasingly more successful. You are part of a long story. Keep it up.

The Belgian journo may be spot on but I live in hope that Jason will return to the fold. Don’t burst my bubble:-))

  2. I’m posting from the Barnes & Noble bookshop where my grand daughters are shopping for books.

I’ve had a wee look back but now I have a problem

I sat down in a kid sized chair and I’m having problems getting out of it.

    Any suggestions?

PS. In the last year I’ve lost 30 pounds, so lard ass insults won’t fly. ;-)

Aye, we can but dream :-)

I read that there a few clubs after him, so it’s down to City and the boy, maybes CL games will have a bearing, we just need to get there.

  4. Two bits

First, I would take both Denayer and Hooper back in a flash.

With a bit f luck, IMHO Denayer will go on to be one of the world’s top 10 defenders.

Hooper, has shown he can score goals in Europe, where our others forwards haven’t,

    Second, team for Wed

    Gordon

    Mikel VVD Mulgrew Izzy

    Brown Bitton

    Forrest Johansen Armstrong

    Griffiths

Bit of a controversial one dropping Boyota, but at the moment, he has too many mistakes in him, with losing possession and not chasing back.

He needs games, and will come good, but we can’t afford to take chances and lose a goal.

Hopefully, we will win 5 nil, but, right now I will be pleased with anything that keeps a clean sheet

  5. Let me swim against the tide a bit on the Denayer loan. There are certainly some positives in it, if true. He is familiar with our defence and the team, in general. He will be familiar with VVD’s role in the team and will be an able substitute for him.

However, is it a good idea to have the spine of the team composed of loanees? Presumably both Hooper and Jason would be loans. All this does is buy us a year then we are back into the scramble to fill these two positions unless we have two prospects coming through the youth system. So, unless we are buying Jason, I’d prefer that we bought a CB to replace Virgil.

Also, I am not sure that Gary would fit into Ronny’s system. He is a predatory striker in the box. Although he can hold the ball up for others, it is not his strength. I do not see the sense in bringing him back.

Still it is good to see that there is some planning to deal with the departure of Virgil. I hope we are prepared to pay more than the usual 2 million for his replacement. As transfer fees escalate at the top end, it affects what you can get for 2 million nowadays. Buying ar 4 and selling at 10-12 million is still a good deal.

Fair point about Hooper. I used to think we could do better. Now I’d have him back in a heartbeat.

Boyata is a worry, those goals have been coming, as he’s got away with similar in a few games.

He didn’t seem overly concerned on Saturday, so maybe he won’t be affected by the mistakes?

  8. Leaving aside the financial aspect; What has Gary Hooper done since he left us to prove he can cut it in European football.?

Hello again all you young rebels.

Just about sobered up enough to post again after a great

weekend with the peninsula hoops, new members joining

our club every time we have our Sunday fun day in

Mornington, this time a couple of EPL. fans Man.U. Arsenal

decided they would join as they loved the company and the

craic so were going to need a bigger club by the looks of it

and once our bhoys have worked on them they will soon

be wearing the famous green and white.

Sorry to hear about Kev’s troubles, always enjoyed his narky

posts, thoughts prayers with all the family.

Denayer/ Hooper take them both back in a heartbeat, never

    have enough quality players imo.

    Juventus v Celtic 2013

Juve fan on Hooper… “Too fat … Too slow ”

He wasn’t the only one out his depth!

Let’s build a team to meet future challenges of the CL

  11. I’d be amazed but thrilled if Jason came back. I understand that a comparable permanent signing would be preferable. However we know what we will get with Jason, Virgil is likely to go sometime this season and Jason would steady the ship whilst Boyata finds his feet and hopefully O’Connell as well.

Hooper would be more of a risk but he would have something to prove, it’s a huge yes to Hooper from me, if he comes back he will score goals.

  12. thomthethim for Oscar OK on

There was a Tweet earlier, attributed to Paul67, with the headline About Denayer on the ” brink” of returning to Celtic.

On reading the ascribed article, whoever wrote it merely mentions that Man City were looking at another centre half.

From this, the author made the gigantic leap that JD may return, or may not.

Personally, I don’t think actually penned the piece and he has delegated his byline to someone else.

    Lazy sub editing.

Has Level5 got the CQN contract?

  14. Permit myself a smile at the comparisons between Jason and Dedryk.

    Some short memories methinks.

Jason’s early games not too different at all, loose passing and in particular poor positioning in respect of his fellow defenders. He was a boy and at the time we didn’t know how much he’d grow!

So cut Big D some slack. Although 4 years older (I think) he really is a novice as far as first team, high level professional football games are concerned.

    Let’s see how HE grows!

  15. Gary hooper, not for me thanks.

Not the same when he took a dunt when playing for us. (Forget against whom).

    His bottle went.

Also if he cant don’t for Norwich he ain’t gonna do it for us.

I’d have Lustig at CH and put either Fisher or Janko at full back.

None of the three would be overawed by the occasion and would serve us well.

Just another thought re the SA saga. I would imagine a deal involving 3 players, 2 clubs, 3 agents and assorted legal reps would take a lot of time and effort to arrange and conclude to everyone’s mutual satisfaction. The media narrative was that Celtic had trumped the Govan franchise at the 11 th hour when common sense suggests otherwise.
