Scouting and international breaks

276

Not all managers regard it as necessary to personally watch a player before signing him. Some are satisfied to trust their scouts, stats and video evidence.

That’s through necessity, though.  What chance of you of watching a late addition to your wanted list in the dying weeks of a window?  They would all prefer to see the player in person.

With two games a week, that is often impossible. This issue lead Martin O’Neill and Gordon Strachan to over rely on players they came up against in the SPL.

International breaks are, therefore, an oasis of opportunity.  This is when a manager can travel half the globe watching football, assessing multiple targets.

Ange Postecoglou now has free midweeks but he has used the February and March breaks to get ahead of the curve. Let’s hope wisely.

  1. TLT – Friday is Defo on.

Coneybhoy get yerself down to the Shipbank on Friday.

No difference to getting know fellow Celts in Glasgow or Belfast.

Although I cannot imagine playing pool with some of the Multi moniker Huns that post on here but hey maybe you are right and if they turn up on Friday we will see.

    D :)

  2. ConeyBhoy – I appreciate that, my observation was more to do with the whole Disney brand which has been built around entertaining children. Netflix or Amazon maybe making them stretch their brand into territory that they don’t belong in (in my opinion).

  3. Coneybhoy,

O’Riley wins it fella. In a game we don’t have to win, his stats for pressing and tackling are exceptional. This is a midfield battle too – they’ll stick Jack and Lundstrum in there to flood it and I suspect our inverted full backs won’t be as adventurous. He played that pass and move role brillantly back in February with Callum and Reo.

We lose a bit of a goal threat in not having Rogic (O’Riley does need to improve his shots and goals) but getting round the park defensively as well as offensively is not Tam’s game.

Two great players and glad to have them both in the squad.

  4. It’s great to be in the position we’re in now- they can’t be as bad as they were last time – could be a classic

David 66 all welcome. Even Garngad ruffians. We going to the 8 ball pool hall after?

  8. Didn’t realise friendlies are included in the FIFA RANKINGS. Clarke has done a good job with the squad. Playing some nice football. Gordon proving yet again he is a very good keeper.

  9. D66…am pretty sure he can do a 12 pint speech…but can he play 12 pint pool ;-))

  10. TLT – Good point, right J you have to do a 12 pint speech whilst playing pool.

Was watching the Portugal game until they scored their second. Been all Austria since 62 minutes, don’t know what the game was like beforehand. Their goal looked off side but that second certainly wasn’t

  12. Regarding Sunday.

It’s what we do going forward that counts. We need plenty of fit players to give us options going forward as the game unfolds and to keep a fast tempo up.

Get an early goal and watch them crumble.

    D :)

  13. Austria equalise….Scotland looking to throw it away…nearly 3 Austria…good grief…

  14. Got tickets today to take my 9-year-old to see the Harlem Globetrotters in Alicante. Wonder if Curly and Meadowlark are still playing 🤣

    Childhood memories.

  15. The Ibrox Nigerian contingent will head back to Glasgow on a bit if a downer. No Qatar in November for them. There’s always Australia lads , suppose.

  16. Deniabhoy…lol…didn’t realise they were still a thing. Hope you both hav a great time…and if the cartoon characters are playing…sumbdy spiked yer drink ;-))

  17. Does domestic football stop for Qatar World Cup? Assume countries that qualify will want players 3-4 weeks before tournament? Then 2-4 weeks of games.

  18. Finishes 2-2…a nothing game really…but for some poor finishing & good saves by Gordon (1st half)…Scotland would have been comprehensively beaten

  19. So Aribo and Bassey going the distance in a tough and ultimately losing battle today v Ghana.

That more than balances our man Hatate and his 46 mins in an almost friendly in Japan.
