Scouting and international breaks

276

Not all managers regard it as necessary to personally watch a player before signing him. Some are satisfied to trust their scouts, stats and video evidence.

That’s through necessity, though.  What chance of you of watching a late addition to your wanted list in the dying weeks of a window?  They would all prefer to see the player in person.

With two games a week, that is often impossible. This issue lead Martin O’Neill and Gordon Strachan to over rely on players they came up against in the SPL.

International breaks are, therefore, an oasis of opportunity.  This is when a manager can travel half the globe watching football, assessing multiple targets.

Ange Postecoglou now has free midweeks but he has used the February and March breaks to get ahead of the curve. Let’s hope wisely.

  1. Before Algeria scored, Cameroon keeper ran into post, collapsed behind goal. Ref booked him for leaving the pitch!

Don’t know where he us from, but he can clearly differentiate real injuries from fakes.

  3. Just realized that away goals rule still applies in ET. I thought it did not, but I was wrong. Cameroon are going to Qatar. Algerians shattered.

  4. I think Algerians thought the same about the away goals rule. Now they are all greeting uncontrollably. Must be cruel to think you are through then have it snatched away seconds later. I thought that only happened to Scotland.

  5. I guess listening to the game in Spanish didn’t help either. I take that option when the alternative commentator is English, American ( bloody awful ) Scottish, or fake American ( Rae, the guy from Dunfermline with the Oklahoma accent ).

  6. Peru – Paraguay and Chile- Uruguay coming up. Either Chile or Colombia could pip Peru for a play off place, if Peru lose to Paraguay. ( And Peter Piper picked a pot of pickled pepper ).

  7. Iniquitousiv…to be honest, my interest in international cup competitions only awakens at semi-final level

Just wow.i got that game and the pro Algerian commentator sounded like an Arabic version of the Norwegian commentator from many years ago “Maggie your boys took a hell of a beating” line as Algeria step towards history by qualifying,…players dropping with cramp..then Cameroon score, he didn’t sound to good.great 5 min watch tho

Re Doaks I hope he does sign on too,I don’t like to see us loose talent but as you were saying earlier the scouting databases of big clubs are massive but the decision to sign is totally that individuals,in our example Doaks.

It’s an odd example but I remember The Battered Bunnett doing analysis about youngsters coming thro, iirc the success rate was the same,in some cases harder to be a consistent top flight footballer than a neuro surgeon!!

We know Ange only wants those who want to be there.

I wish the bhoy well and hope its wi us.

From earlier – I’m not barred from hootenanny’s, just don’t get emailed anymore(not how it works now)

As i am rarely on SC (due to it being boring) i never see the call for hoots anymore

  11. Paraguay being coached by legendary Boca Juniors and Argentine winger Guillermo Schelotto.

If this result stands, neither Colombia or Chile can catch Peru for 5 place play off spot.

  12. Peru dominated first 20 minutes, but Paraguay slowly getting into the game. No score in other ties so far.

  13. Peru 2 – Paraguay 0. Great goal

Neither Chile or Colombia making any headway, even if Paraguay do them a favour.

    Uh Oh!

    VAR check.

    GOAL

  14. I’m going to call it a night. Colombia and Chile need Paraguay to score 2 goals, as well as win their games, and Chile also need Venezuela to score against Colombia.

Not much chance of all that happening in last 26 minutes.

    Long day. Nighty night.😊

  18. What an incredible tribute to the legend that is Shane Warne. Elton John and Coldplay playing at your memorial in your favourite sporting venue is as fitting as it could be.

A succession of great tributes from friends and family and teammates and opponents ….each more tear inducing than the next ….
