Scouting and international breaks

276

Not all managers regard it as necessary to personally watch a player before signing him. Some are satisfied to trust their scouts, stats and video evidence.

That’s through necessity, though.  What chance of you of watching a late addition to your wanted list in the dying weeks of a window?  They would all prefer to see the player in person.

With two games a week, that is often impossible. This issue lead Martin O’Neill and Gordon Strachan to over rely on players they came up against in the SPL.

International breaks are, therefore, an oasis of opportunity.  This is when a manager can travel half the globe watching football, assessing multiple targets.

Ange Postecoglou now has free midweeks but he has used the February and March breaks to get ahead of the curve. Let’s hope wisely.

  1. Just reading back; we are in need of an old school BMCUWP Hootenanny to introduce ourselves

Not as Big Jimmy advocates (which has its place of coirse) but an inclusive one

I can see cracks in some of the jousting recently that a game of pool ( has to be black in last pocket) would sort

Good point and indicative of the short term success KPI Ange has

A bit like Lennon in 2010 when he was handed a range of experienced players to win the league.

He nearly did; it was too close for s rookie to get over the line.

Why would away goals not be counted???

I thought it might be the same as European games.

Ghana go through, 1-1, on away goal. No confidence boost for Nigerian Sevs nor shop window in Qatar.

I see. You were talking about away goals counting double, which is a far cry from away goals not counting at all. I’m easily confused.

Pleased for Hendry . The Austrian diver is embarrassing

Correct. He felt a slight touch on his head from Jack’s hand, knew it was a goal and went down clutching his face. My pet hate in football. Cheating all day long.

Felt sorry for him covering Brown and giving away free kicks, pens, reds etc for us last 3 years. He can tackle

Watching Tierney shows how hard Taylor tries at Celtic

Feel bad fir slagging him so much

  16. Aribo was ‘trending’ on twitter. Took a look. Him, bologun and bassey all getting pelters from Nigeria fans.

Watched the first half of the Scotland game. Odd performance from Jack. He is either simply not fit or he us not trying very hard.

A very impressive performance from Scotland with some excellent passing and possession. Unlucky not to be further ahead although Gordon has made 3 great saves.

Many thanks for your reply. What constitutes a female to play for the Celtic Ladies team is a simple process. Or any Ladies team for that matter.

It wasn’t that simple for Caster Semenya when she was training for the S. African track team. In fact she started running to train for her fitba team so it wasn’t such a clear cut issue for S. African fitba and athletics. I doubt they are a radical hippie woke bunch or whatever other words the Gammons use as jibes these days.

Walk into any working class pub in Glasgow and you will get your answer.

In the pubs, that crude answer would not disqualify many a transexual person. A hole is easily created. You may be going into more learned establishments than I visit but I don’t get any detailed knowledge of the female reproductive system in the ones I go to (and, no- that doesn’t mean they are Gay Bars).

I have learned not to dismiss common sense. It is one of the greatest mitigations out there, although it can never be put on any written risk assessment.

I did not dismiss it; I stated that it means all things and anything to different people. Just as one man’s terorist is another’s freedom fighter so one ma’s common sense is another man’s stupid nonsense. Risk assessment is just one of q million situations in which applying “common sense” would be instantly dismissed as “what do you mean?”

Definition: ” Sound judgement not based on specialised knowledge. ”

That is an uncontroversial definition to provide a starting point. It moves our understanding of the term from where we are to a little bit further from where we were. That definition begs further sub-definitions. What do we mean by “Sound”? “specialised”? and “knowledge”? On each one of those definitions, disagreements will abound, even though, they too have definitions in a dictionary. I have picked up many bits of informed and obscure knowledge in pubs but there is a reason that most people seek knowledge in schools, colleges and universities and from professional trainers and educators even though the Guiness there may be of poorer quality.

No need to muddy the waters, the simple answer is often the best.

Not a dictum that stands up in quantum physics or in the more arcane reaches of human biology. Simplicity is a virtue but it is not sufficient in itself. If it does not cover all the bases then the act of simplification has muddied and obscured. There are complex aspects to some issues and we should not scorn the effort to look at it all.

I do think this issue will impact football sooner rather than later.

How soon? What impact? Does common sense have the answers for these two questions?

    Without doubt, interesting times ahead.

    Definitely, especially this Sunday.

AN TEARMANN on 29TH MARCH 2022 6:58 PM.

I unashamedly put greater issues into a Celtic context. It’s not about using Celtic to make a point, it’s because this is a Celtic blog and if the issue is associated with or affects Celtic then it’s valid.

Gp,it’s invalid my friend,in the legal context Celtic operate within the law not the other way round, the issue in question, say this current definition question.

You and I do know what we are,but a number want to determine that themselves, how it impacts the future we don’t know.it will tho and we will encompass it and get round ìt,and it’ll be within the law and Celtic will change.
